A Reflection from Fr. Perry
|
|
I’ve always loved to go to coffee shops to sit and study. I wrote two-thirds of my dissertation sitting in the Starbucks at 99th Avenue and Camelback (I knew the manager there and she’d occasionally bring me a free coffee because I spent so much time there and also because we are still married to this day), and as the seasons of life have changed, my love of sitting and working in a crowded place while in a caffeine-induced frenzy has not.
I was sitting in a Starbucks four or five years ago working through the reading list for one of my final classes in seminary. I don’t remember the exact essay I was reading at the time, but I do remember that I was at the 32nd Street and Lincoln store. One of the risks of doing seminary homework in Starbucks—at least for me—was that I would often read things that I found so profoundly moving that I could not hold back the tears. This was one of those days. The chapter I was reading that day was about the theology of the liturgy, and when I got to the description of Holy Communion, I cried (a lot) in the middle of Starbucks.
That reading continues to stick with me to this day. The author wrote how our weekly rite of Communion is a small preview of things to come, but more than that, each week when we gather, we join with Christians past, present, and yet to come—and with Jesus himself, our Great High Priest—in proclaiming the love of God in the meal we share. It is truly sacramental in the sense that our act points to God’s invisible grace with the tangible elements of bread and wine.
If you look in the bulletin, you will see my own distillation of this theology of Communion as our new invitation to join us at Christ’s table to share in this feast. I love that, as Episcopalians, this is a central part of our worship every single time we gather. And I know I am not the only person who is deeply moved by this experience week in and week out.
The method by which we observe Holy Communion at All Saints’ is one that has come up in a handful of conversations around the parish over the last couple months, so we did a survey last week to understand how everyone is feeling about the practice of intinction as the only method of receiving the consecrated wine. A clear majority of people—almost 75% of responses—indicated that they would only continue the practice of intinction. Some people wrote in comments that it would be nice to have the option for visitors to sip or intinct even though they themselves were not personally inclined to drink from the chalice.
As a result, we are going to continue our current practice and the consecrated wine will still be available only by intinction throughout the summer months. For those of you who believe that sipping from the chalice is an important part of your worship experience: I hear you and I understand your desire to Communicate in this way. Over the summer, we will work with our Altar Guild and Communion Ministers to determine a way to make both options available to people in a way that honors everyone’s needs and concerns. That means we will develop a creative solution that will allow people to sip if they desire WHILE ALSO maintaining chalices that are used ONLY for intinction since that is the stated desire of most of our members. It will take time and care to do this the right way, so if you have thoughts about this, please know that you are always welcome to share them with me.
Wishing you all peace during this final week of Eastertide!

By Dr. Emma Whitman
Head of School
We are thrilled to share that All Saints’ kindergarten teacher, Ms. Nicole Tamer, has been awarded the Connie Wootton Excellence in Teaching Award from the Southwestern Association of Episcopal Schools (SAES)! Ms. Tamer was selected from a significant pool of finalists across the Southwest, from Louisiana to Texas to Arizona.
This prestigious award is given annually to one exceptional lower-school educator who displays a passion for teaching and innovation, a deep appreciation for professional development, a love for students, and a willingness to help students achieve their personal best. Mr. Hammontree and another teacher, along with a member of the Board of Trustees and I, nominated Ms. Tamer, who has been an integral part of the All Saints' community since 2013.
One nominator wrote, “[Ms. Tamer] is the most dedicated professional that I have ever had the privilege to work with, and she exemplifies positivity, love for humans, and a deep belief in her work as an educator.”
Ms. Tamer has been a pillar of support and inspiration for our students. In addition to her role as a kindergarten teacher, she also serves as the lower-school service coordinator, dedicates her afternoons to Extended Care, and eagerly teaches during All Saints’ Summer Session each year. Her commitment to her students and colleagues is unwavering, as she can be found at school from early in the morning to late at night, always with a smile on her face and radiating positive energy.
This award is an incredible honor for Ms. Tamer and All Saints’. Please join us in congratulating her on this remarkable achievement!

Where Everyone Knows Your Name . . .
Partly because you have a name tag! And the spot for storing it has changed. No longer the cumbersome towers, but the sleek white board in the narthex around the corner from the Legacy Circle monument. There's a spot for New Orders to be added also, so you can find it easier. If you don't see yours, be sure to contact Lori Brooks in the Church Office at lbrooks@allsaintsoncentral.org.

Sometimes, the writing is not on the wall, but on the rocks.
Happened by this the other day while riding the horse in the neighborhood. Cuts to the chase, doesn't it? And very reassuring to know! Have a great week.
