Message from Craig

It is that time of the year again where the weather is warming up and (most of us) look forward to leaving winter behind. However, we must not forget the great things that the colder days brought us: a successful fall semester, the holidays. A particular highlight of mine was working closely with President Magill and getting the chance to see the university (and its intersections with the city) from her new perspective. I would encourage anyone who can to look at Penn with fresh eyes whether with a friend or family member or when you have a free, quiet moment and take it all in again as if it is the first time.

However, in this spring season and exciting time of renewal, let’s take a moment to appreciate the warmer weather, the sunshine, and look forward to all that our campus and great city has to offer over the next few months.

Whether it’s the Phillies home opener on April 6, the Philadelphia Union's new season having kicked off on March 25, Idina Menzel delivering the Commencement address on May 15, or Penn Relays attracting country- and worldwide attention April 27–29, there is so much to see, do, experience, and enjoy here. (I've included a variety of links to other Philadelphia events in the "Craig's Tips" section below!)

Let’s enjoy and take advantage of what Penn & Philly can offer us... even if it’s just a visit to the BioPond on your lunch break or a trip to Morris Arboretum over the weekend. We tend to spend so much time indoors and in front of screens, which isn't always good for us. Time outside, especially in nature, is important to our overall wellbeing. Even in challenging times, it is important to take advantage of the spring, breathe in the fresh air, and support the city and our parks as best we can.

Three Penn construction projects have been awarded 2023 Grand Jury Awards from the Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia:

  • (1) The Burk-Bergman Boathouse renovation and addition,
  • (2) The repairs to the David Goddard Research Laboratories, and
  • (3) The renovation of Kelly Writer's House.

The Preservation Alliance seeks to promote the appreciation, protection, and appropriate use and development of the Philadelphia region's historic buildings, communities, and landscapes.

EVP Assistants' Conference - "All Together Now!"

With a theme of “All Together Now,” administrative support staff from across the EVP Center gathered on March 7 to enjoy a rare opportunity to connect in person. Facilitated by Amma Napier and Samantha Sonet of HR Learning & Education, the 44 attendees were delighted by a presentation on “What’s New in Microsoft Office,” took part in a session on “Positive Emotions and Joy Multiplier” from the Penn Positive Psychology Center, and ended the day with a speed-dating style networking session. The feedback from the group was glowing, and plans are underway to make it an annual event.

Penn | IT Strategic Plan

Penn is developing a new University Information Technology Strategic Plan and prioritizing IT activities for the next three to five years. Led by Information Systems & Computing, the initiative includes representation across Penn’s Schools and Centers. Further updates can be followed on their website as the initiative progresses and interviews are held. Please provide valuable input by completing this survey!
