Weedkiller Roundup, a brand name for glyphosate, has been approved for continued use in Europe. (ABC News: Louie Eroglu)
The European Commission has approved the use of the controversial weedkiller glyphosate for another decade, with a spokesperson for Australian growers backing the move as good news for exports. Authorisation in European Union countries was set to expire on December 15, after a one-year extension was given last year.

Emerging horticulture challenges demand attention
Australia can no longer trade off its ‘clean and green’ reputation without the evidence to prove it, a national fresh produce industry event was told. Freshcare’s inaugural National Assurance Summit drew stakeholders from across the entire horticulture supply chain for a two-day program focused on addressing immediate and future challenges faced by the sector, as it works to reaffirm itself as having ‘trusted and sustainable’ business practices.

Contours were pushed into the Hughes's land to slow water flow.(Supplied: Lachlan Hughes Foundation).
Anna Hughes was 20 weeks pregnant with their third child when her husband, Lachlan, went to work on their farm and never made it home. Losing the highly respected 36-year-old in a farm accident in 2018 devastated his close-knit family and a much wider network of friends and colleagues.
A really interesting read about a movement which is becoming increasingly topical, and which attendees were introduced to at last month’s National Olive Industry Conference.

GROWER TO GROWER
Have a question? Need some advice? Ask a fellow grower!
The FOE team regularly hears from growers with questions about grove or production practices, or equipment, that they just can’t find the answers to. They’re things other producers are likely know about and/or experienced themselves. So we’ve set up a new Friday Olive Extracts feature, Grower to Grower, where you can send your questions and have them answered by your peers.
Just send the details to editor@olivegrower.com.au and we’ll put them out to the Friday Olive Extracts community - that’s thousands of readers across the globe.

Consultation opens on Ag and Land Net Zero Plan | |
|
Australians have an opportunity to share their views on how the agriculture and land sectors can play a part in the Government’s economy-wide Net Zero 2050 Plan. A discussion paper for the Agriculture and Land Plan - one of six sectoral decarbonisation plans under the Net Zero 2050 Plan - has been released as part of broader public consultation.
The agricultural industry has long been calling for collaborative policy and national plans to ensure a profitable, productive and sustainable future: producers and land managers are adapting but reducing emissions is a complex task and needs strong collaboration with governments. The Agriculture and Land Plan aims to create that.
Public submissions can be made via DAFF’s Have your Say website here before 13 December and you can find out more about the process here.

Precious: Olive and sunflower oil bottles are displayed for sale, protected by a padlock and a chain to prevent theft in a Tu Super Suma supermarket in Malaga, Spain, on Oct. 23, 2023. (REUTERS)
In Spain, the world’s biggest olive oil producer, supermarkets are locking up bottles of the staple cooking oil as prices surge and theft increases. One-liter bottles of extra-virgin olive oil are selling for as much as 14.5 euros (P879.19) in some supermarkets, propelling olive oil into the category of products retailers fit with security tags, alongside spirits, cosmetics and appliances.
Wow. Just wow. And at the same time …

'Olive oil shock' hits dining tables in Japan as prices of some products rise by over 50%
European olive oil, which has been gaining popularity in Japan mainly due to growing health awareness, has seen its price soar. This is attributed to a poor olive crop caused by global warming, and there are concerns that the situation will be repeated in the future.
Growing Japanese demand for healthy olive oil and soaring European prices … there’s an Australian answer to that situation!

The 1 key upgrade to my ice cream was hiding in my kitchen cupboard
Winter schminter – ice cream is completely acceptable to scoff 365 days of the year in our opinion. But before you tuck into that scoop of ice cream fresh outta the freezer, you’ve got one more thing to drizzle on it.
You guessed it. More praise for the versatility of olive oil.
