New ELA Curriculum
Do you provide homework assistance for middle schoolers after school?
The new districtwide ELA curriculum, Fishtank Learning, requires students to read and/or write daily at home in order to extend their learning, build stamina and independent learning habits, and be ready for class the next day. Many kids would benefit from support with building this routine and with the actual reading and writing tasks as well.
-
In 6th grade, the first text is The Watsons Go to Birmingham 1963
-
in 7th grade, the first text is a compilation of informational texts, short stories and poems all about the theme of Defining America: What does it mean to be American
-
in 8th grade, the first text is All American Boys
-
A sample question looks like: How does Larry Dunn respond to his interaction with Byron? What does this reveal about his character? Support your answer with specific evidence from the text. (from 6th grade)
- Sometimes students will read, or sometimes they will be asked to answer several questions about the reading, writing a few sentences for each question. At times, students might be asked to complete a "Target Task'' writing assignment, which is most likely a paragraph. Teachers will have different methods for tracking and handling HW. Responses might be in notebooks, Google Forms, Docs, classroom, etc.

Transportation Change Form
Are you helping families navigate transportation to your program after school?
Here’s what you need to know:
- Students (any grade) can get transportation from school to an after school program in Cambridge…
- …AS LONG AS that program is a required distance from the school or meets the following criteria:
-
For upper school students, program sites must be at least 1.5 miles away
-
For elementary school-age students, program sites must be at least 1 mile away, or must involve crossing Fresh Pond Parkway, McGrath Highway, Alewife Brook Parkway, or the railroad tracks at Sherman St
- This bus transportation is for the way TO the after school program - pickup from the program at the end of the evening is up to families
-
If families want to sign up for this bus to after school, they must fill out a Transportation Change Form and return it to the school clerk in their school’s main office

Celebrate the hard work of teens from Community Art Center's Teen Public Art Program!
Community Art Center teens worked really hard on a public art project this summer. As part of their participation in the Mayor's Summer Youth Employment Program, they created and painted a building mural on Fawcett Street, that they are rightfully very proud of.
The Art Center is excited to officially "unveil" the teen's work with you, and honor their participation in designing (at least some of) what their community looks like.
Please join them for some FREE food, music, and activity at the mural site on Saturday, September 30th, from 11am - 3pm.
