Annual Meeting and New Member Luncheon

Jazz Ensemble

Faculty House, Garden Room 2

Tuesday, September 13, 12–2pm

A Chance ... to Meet

... to Greet

... to Eat

... to Vote!

The 2022 Annual Meeting will be EPIC’s first in-person gathering since the Covid campus shutdown. The meeting will be hybrid: in-person and simultaneously on Zoom.

At our Annual Luncheon Meeting you will vote on a slate of Officers and Steering Committee members. Click on the links to see the proposed slate, the EPIC Charter, and the new members who have joined our ranks. Your attendance is important for helping ensure that EPIC can continue to play a significant role in advocacy and fellowship for retired Columbia Officers.

Columbia’s Music Performance Program will provide a jazz ensemble. We’ll keep the Zoom session open for breakout chat.

Columbia Business School Tour

Luncheon: Meeting Room 301 and Terrace, The Forum

Tuesday, September 28, 12pm

THE PAST

A century ago, Manhattanville was a bustling port and rail cargo hub that developed into a local center for dairy products, automotive finishing, meatpacking, and other light industry. Bounded by the era’s great public works—the elevated subway viaduct on Broadway and the Riverside Drive viaduct above 12th Avenue—the new Manhattanville campus pays tribute to that history. Elliot Sclar, Professor Emeritus of Urban Planning at GSAPP and the Columbia University Earth Institute, will give us a presentation about Manhattanville’s storied past over lunch at The Forum at 12pm.

THE PRESENT

Designed by world-renowned architecture firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro, in collaboration with FXCollaborative, the two new buildings – Henry R. Kravis Hall and David Geffen Hall – encompass 492,000 square feet, more than doubling the amount of our current space. The buildings incorporate a layer-cake design, integrating faculty, students, and staff in a way that cultivates relationships and the open exchange of ideas. (Read more)

Edward Moroni, Executive Director, Operations and Manhattanville Planning at the Columbia Business School, will give EPICureans a guided tour

EPIC Conversation with Dr. Allen I. Hyman

Allen Hyman, MD, has had a long and distinguished career in research, policy and administration. An anesthesiologist by training, Hyman was Chief Medical Officer, Medical Director and NY-Presbyterian's first chief of staff. Our conversation will include Hyman's service as health-aide to Senator Robert Dole while on a Robert Wood Johnson Health Policy Fellowship. Online EPIC Yoga Every Thursday

10–11am and 11:15am–12:15pm

Professor Emerita Virginia Papaioannou, a registered teacher with the Yoga Alliance, leads EPIC Yoga. No prior experience is required to join. Yoga can benefit people at all levels of physical training and health, but it is always wise to consult with a physician before undertaking any new exercise regime. Modifications will be offered to any participants with specific limitations arising from recovery from injury, arthritis, limited movement, or other causes.

Two one-hour classes are offered each week. The 10–11am class practices breathing techniques and moves through some basic yoga poses, concentrating on alignment, balance, and flexibility. Those with experience move more deeply into the poses. From 11:15am–12:15pm, we practice gentle/chair yoga, which is ideal for those of more limited mobility or flexibility. Classes include breathing, stretching, and yoga poses, done either seated in a chair or standing. No yoga mats are required for this class.
