Announcing the New ELAM and ELH Class of Fellows

We are excited to announce the selection of the 30th anniversary class of ELAM fellows and the new class of fellows for the ELH program track! “This is our largest class ever,” says Nancy D. Spector, MD, executive director of ELAM. “We have 98 ELAM fellows and 48 ELH fellows. The women are exceptional leaders who are capable of making critical systemic change in their institutions. The need for the highest quality leaders in academic health care has never been greater, and we are doing everything we can to help meet that need by providing outstanding and innovative leadership training for women.” Congratulations to the new classes, and thank you again to everyone who nominated or recommended an applicant!

The "CommUNITYten: Big Ten Academic Alliance Conference for Women in Medicine and Biomedical Sciences" inaugural conference will be held in Columbus, Ohio from June 7-8, 2024. The purpose of this conference is to bring together women in medicine and the biomedical sciences, including engineering, to share resources, develop institutional cross-collaborations, disseminate and share resources, solicit mentoring/sponsorship, and provide a network for professional support and development. The event is open to all academic faculty, staff, and trainees as well as industry members in the medicine, health science, and biomedical research fields.

Sandra Burge, PhD (ELAM ’11), was awarded the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine 2024 Susan McDaniel Distinguished Career Award.

Lou Edje, MD, MHPE, FAAFP (ELAM ’23), (pictured speaking at University of Michigan Medical School) has won two state elections: academic director seat of the Michigan State Medical Society (MSMS) Board, and the MSMS Delegation to the American Medical Association.

Annette Gadegbeku, MD (ELAM ’24), has been appointed senior associate dean in the Office of Community Health and Inclusive Excellence at Drexel University College of Medicine, effective May 1, 2024.


Edith Gurewitsch Allen, MD, MBA, MEd (ELH ’24), will be joining Vassar Brothers Medical Center as chair of OBGYN at the end of July.

Margaret Larkins-Pettigrew, MD, MEd (ELAM ’24), was presented with the Imhotep Award (Health & Wellness Protector) by Stop the Violence Pittsburgh on May 17, 2024 (pictured). She was also recognized as an ‘Exceptional Woman in Medicine' by Pittsburgh Magazine.

Julie Oyler, MD (ELH ’24), has been named as the inaugural chair of the newly established Biological Sciences Division Women’s Committee at The University of Chicago Medicine.


Debra Perina, MD (ELAM ’08), was awarded the 2024 American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) Wiegenstein Leadership award, which is the highest award the College gives.

Maame Yaa (Maya) Yiadom, MD (ELH ’24), was featured in the 2024 Stanford EMED magazine in an article titled “Quality, Equity, and AI in Emergency Cardiac Care.” See pages 14 & 15 (slide 7).


Three ELUMs were featured in Becker’s “231+ Black healthcare leaders to know | 2024.” ELUMs include Takesha Cooper, MD, MS (ELAM ’22), Toi Harris, MD (ELAM ’19), and Margaret Larkins-Pettigrew, MD, MEd (ELAM ’24). The leaders featured on this list are shaping the patient experience, educating and training the next generation of healthcare providers, and furthering equity and inclusion.

Nepali climber Phunjo Lama on Thursday reached Mount Everest's summit in 14 hours and 31 minutes, smashing the record for the world's fastest ascent of the mountain by a woman. Climbers usually take days to reach the top of the 29,032-foot mountain, spending nights on its different camps to rest and acclimatize.
