POEM

Still I Rise

By Maya Angelou

You may write me down in history

With your bitter, twisted lies,

You may trod me in the very dirt

But still, like dust, I’ll rise.

Does my sassiness upset you?

Why are you beset with gloom?

’Cause I walk like I’ve got oil wells

Pumping in my living room.

Just like moons and like suns,

With the certainty of tides,

Just like hopes springing high,

Still I’ll rise.

Did you want to see me broken?

Bowed head and lowered eyes?

Shoulders falling down like teardrops,

Weakened by my soulful cries?

Does my haughtiness offend you?

Don’t you take it awful hard

’Cause I laugh like I’ve got gold mines

Diggin’ in my own backyard.

You may shoot me with your words,

You may cut me with your eyes,

You may kill me with your hatefulness,

But still, like air, I’ll rise.

Does my sexiness upset you?

Does it come as a surprise

That I dance like I’ve got diamonds

At the meeting of my thighs?

Out of the huts of history’s shame

I rise

Up from a past that’s rooted in pain

I rise

I’m a black ocean, leaping and wide,

Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.

Leaving behind nights of terror and fear

I rise

Into a daybreak that’s wondrously clear

I rise

Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,

I am the dream and the hope of the slave.

I rise

I rise

I rise.

MESSAGE FROM STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT LEAGHTON N. OZORIA

Our school is proof positive. As we wait for the Aspen Institute’s decision, I believe that we all deserve a micro-award that stems from it because, along with our teachers, we have made this school proficient. Our educators teach with consciousness, with open doors. We have the responsibility to show them how much we appreciate their efforts. We, as students, can manage time, study, and write better not only to fulfill our class requirements but for self-satisfaction and to show appreciation for our teacher’s time. Keep joining us in the Student Leadership Academy, at Phi Theta Kappa, or become part of the SGA. This is where we all intersect to become the best by supporting each other.

Dear Students and Colleagues,

I hope the semester is progressing well and that you have the opportunity to participate in the various activities at Hostos that are being offered in honor of Black History Month. I am delighted that the Educating for Diversity – Ms. MacKenzie Scott’s Gift: President’s Initiative is helping to sponsor the Black History Month Program, under the auspices of the Black Studies Unit, led by Professor Ana Ozuna, which has already hosted two successful events. These include Removing Symbols of Oppression and Facilitating Healing, a vital and timely discussion led by Professor Cequyna Moore, Program Director of the World Heritage Monuments Toolkit Project, and A Conversation with Black Studies Alumni, moderated by Professor Anamaría Flores, that engaged Black Studies alumni in sharing how their learning experiences at Hostos have influenced their lives and career trajectories. Please check the Black History Month program calendar here to participate in upcoming events.

The Educating for Diversity Initiative is also supporting the Food Studies Unit, led by Professor Flor Henderson, which is hosting a three-part guest seminar series, Food as an Intercultural Bridge and Communicator, with invited speakers representing diverse cultural groups who through their talks will address current issues impacting urban food systems. The first guest lecture was held this week featuring Dr. Fabio Parasecoli, Professor of Food Studies at New York University, Steinhardt, whose lecture, Gastronativism: Food, Power, Identity, is based on his research exploring the cultural politics of food in media, design, and heritage. The guest lectures are offered via Zoom to Food Studies students and open to all in the college community. Please contact Professor Henderson at fhenderson@hostos.cuny.edu for updates on the upcoming seminars.

The 2023–2028 Strategic Planning Process: Radically Contemporary, Rooted in the Past

We are engaged in a college-wide process of developing a new strategic plan. The 2023-2028 Strategic Plan is an evidence-informed, collectively drafted framework guided by the six Mission Pillars. It proposes a roadmap for the next five years by identifying goals and strategies to support student success. It is, by definition, a vision of the future. The past, too, shapes how we think about our roles and our commitments. Shared below are three ideas from the past that I’ll argue are in conversation with the drafts of the 20232028 Strategic Plan:

1) In 1967, Martin Luther King, Jr. wrote, “Universities adapting to the new needs of the day must learn how to develop the abilities of people who have had trouble with school in their youth and have not earned their credentials. They should be trained on the job, get university credit for their experience, learn in relevant courses and develop a liberal-arts knowledge that is built around their concerns. We need what S.M. Miller has called “second-chance universities.” A democratic educational system requires multiple doors.” [i]

President Cocco De Filippis has invoked MLK’s words on occasion; the alignment with our mission is clear, and MLK’s words are as relevant as ever: Hostos Community College was founded in 1968 in response to the communities that demanded access to higher education in the South Bronx. Our mission laid out our commitments to the underrepresented communities that fought for open doors for students seeking knowledge and socio-economic mobility. Today we are still providing students with both the liberal arts foundations and career and technical skills they need to succeed, and the drafts of the strategic plan reaffirm these commitments while ensuring they are articulated in ways that are relevant to today’s students and today’s world.

2) In the last decades of the 19th century, Eugenio Maria de Hostos, the scholar, educator, and activist for whom we are named, argued, “if anything in this world is in need of radical revolution, it is the educational system.”

While none of the strategic planning working groups recommended revolution, members of each group examined the college’s root purposes and what it means to act in response to the mission pillars. Visiting those roots and committing to radical responses is an orienting exercise and an affirming one.

3) The last idea I’ll introduce is tikkun olam – a Hebrew term understood today as the idea that we are called to make the world more just, peaceful, tolerant, and equal through acts of charity, kindness, and political/social action. This invitation, which is also imperative, is at the root of what Hostos is. Our role within the communities we serve, and as a place of (re-)production for the richly intersecting communities we are, is to make an intentional, meaningful, measurable difference. The scale and scope of that difference sometimes vary daily, but the understanding that we are here as agents for change powers all we do together. [ii]

[i] Luther King, Jr., Martin. “Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community?”, Paperback ed., Beacon Press, Boston, MA, 2010, p. 209.

[ii] I’ve expanded tikkun olam to apply to “we” although the concept of tikkun olam is more traditionally aligned with Judaism.

Highlighting CUNY Policies You Should Know

CUNY Policy on Sexual Misconduct

This Policy prohibits Sexual Misconduct at The City University of New York (“CUNY”). In addition to defining what constitutes Sexual Misconduct and explaining the resources available to those affected by Sexual Misconduct, this Policy details CUNY’s procedures for investigating and adjudicating allegations of Sexual Misconduct. CUNY’s process for addressing allegations of Sexual Misconduct is based on federal, state, and local laws, including Title IX, the federal law that prohibits sex discrimination in education, and New York State’s Education Law Article 129- B, also known as the “Enough is Enough” law.

Do you qualify for the Fair Fares MetroCard program?

Fair Fares NYC is a City program created to help New Yorkers with low incomes manage their transportation costs. Using the Fair Fares NYC MetroCard, eligible New York City residents receive a 50% discount on the subway and eligible bus fares. Pay-per-Ride, weekly unlimited, and monthly unlimited options are all available. Fair Fares can also provide 50% off MTA Access-A-Ride paratransit trips. Because Access-A-Ride customers do not use a MetroCard, their discount is applied automatically to their Access-A-Ride trips once their Fair Fares and Access-A-Ride accounts are linked.

To qualify, you must be between the ages of 18 and 64, live in New York City, meet income limits (see website), and not receive a discounted MetroCard from any other New York City program.

Visit the Fair Fares website to check your eligibility, create an account, and apply.

#Hostos55 will explore events, locations, and feel-good experiences of the Hostos family. Our amazing campus has evolved over time, and we want to shine a light on that as well as your point of view! How have you evolved professionally, personally, and academically? Where do you thrive on campus? What are your most memorable moments at Hostos?

#Hostos55 celebrates our history with the world! Prizes will be awarded for posts that get the most love. Winning posts will be determined by the number of views, likes, comments, or shares. There is no limit to the number of posts you can make. Start today, #Hostos55! OAA is on Facebook and Instagram, and we look forward to your contributions to #Hostos55! Walls of Writing at Hostos

The Walls of Writing happened for the first time in 2009 and again in 2017 to celebrate the National Day on Writing (October 20). It was spearheaded by Professors Linda Hirsch and Andrea Fabrizio (now Associate Dean for Academic Affairs), who served as the Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) co-coordinators. The WAC Writing Fellows played an important role in the success of the initiative, and OAA is partnering again to reimagine the initiative.

This time the Walls of Writing will feature aphorisms from Eugenio Maria de Hostos, the man. All campus members will have an opportunity to reflect and respond to the aphorisms by writing on the walls. Thoughtful responses and reflections made by individuals may be invited to provide formal written reflections that could be published in the Hostos Weekly in April or May 2023. More details will follow in the coming weeks. Stay tuned.

Children’s Center

Yoga Expands: Yoga classes with Yo Re Mi, a program that combines music, mindfulness, and yoga to help children achieve calm, officially began this week in our infant and one-year-old classrooms. (Our twos and preschoolers began last week.)

President’s Visit: President Cocco De Filippis and Chief of Staff Kreymer visited the Children’s Center for a tour on Monday, February 6. They visited with staff and observed all children hard at work and play, including our babies and one-year-olds.

CUNY EDGE

During the orientation, the students learned about all of the benefits and services CUNY EDGE offers them. We also discussed requirements and answered questions they had for us. More updates to come next week on attendance and the results of the feedback survey we will be sending out after the workshop.

Admissions

The Office of Admissions and Recruitment has created a series of 14 General Information Sessions for the Spring 2023 semester. These interactive webinars are designed to provide admissions-related information about Hostos to prospective students, who can interact with an Admission Advisor and inquire about the application process. These sessions will run virtually, from 4 - 4:45 p.m., every Monday, starting on Monday, February 27, 2023, through Monday, May 29, 2023. Links will be shared soon.

Student Success Coaching Unit (SSCU)

SSCU completed the spring enrollment cycle on February 3, 2023. Students were assisted either in person or virtually and received one-on-one attention which greatly facilitated the enrollment process. Students expressed their gratitude to the coaches for creating a pleasant and informative environment for them to register.

One student wrote: "I just want to thank you for all your help and let you know that Hostos has the best advisors ever. In my previous schools, no advisors ever took the time out to explain things.”

College Discovery

The Office of College Discovery, in collaboration with their Social Work Interns, will be hosting the following virtual workshops:

Motivation | March 13, 2 - 1 p.m.: A workshop designed to help students find their motivation and apply them to their academic goals. School-Life balance can be overwhelming for students and staying focused in the face of life distractions is important for academic success. Students are invited to consider what steps they need to take to achieve their long-term goals.

Academic Probation | March 24, 12 - 1 p.m.: A workshop that invites students to embark on a journey where they gain a better understanding of the repercussions of poor academic performance. Students will develop concrete steps for academic rehabilitation to return to the path of academic success, and learn measures to prevent probation reoccurrence.

Graduation and Retention | April 21, 2 - 3 p.m.: As we prepare for the next semester, students will reflect on where they are in their academic journey and where they hope to go. Whether a student is enrolling for another year at Hostos, transitioning to a 4-year college, or entering the workforce in the fall, we will discuss what to do to bring their goal to fruition.

Links to virtual workshops will be shared soon.

Accessibility Resource Center (ARC)

Hostos Accessibility Resource Center’s staff, along with faculty and students from the College, rallied at the State Capitol on Wednesday, February 8, to demand increased state funding for higher education disability services. Lawmakers, led by Assemblymember Harvey Epstein and Senator Andrew Gounardes, also introduced a resolution memorializing February 8, 2023, as Students with Disabilities Advocacy Day in the State of New York. Students with disabilities who attend CUNY and SUNY colleges, as well as private colleges and universities from every corner of the state, advocated for their budget priorities.

They are calling for:

  • $13 million in state funding for Enhancing Supports and Services for the Postsecondary Success of Students with Disabilities (SWDPS). Students and advocates have been calling for a total investment in the capacities of higher education institutions to support the access and inclusion of New Yorkers with disabilities in higher education since 2018, and it has been a New York State Regents priority for four consecutive years. $2 million have been received. For 2023–24, Regents has requested full program funding at $15M to meet students' needs.

  • The passage of S1880 would make financial aid options, such as the Tuition Assistance Program (TAP), accessible for Hostos college students with intellectual disabilities (CUNY Unlimited).

Student Services

The Offices of Scholarship and Transfer Services, in collaboration with the Writing Center, hosted the Belle Zeller Scholarship writing workshop on Tuesday, February 14, 2023.

The Belle Zeller Scholarship Trust Fund, based on merit and not financial need, was established in 1979 by the Professional Staff Congress/CUNY (PSC CUNY), the instructional staff union of The City University of New York. This scholarship is intended to honor the unique qualities of Belle Zeller: the combination of social commitment and scholarship. The scholarship application deadline is March 3, 2023. Budget Update

At the All College meeting on February 9, President Cocco De Filippis noted in her welcome remarks that the college, while making positive forward progress in many areas, remains in a challenged state. During our update at the meeting, we reminded the audience that back in December, CUNY Central had implemented a 2% reduction for all colleges in order to achieve the collective Fiscal Year 2023 savings target. Hostos was able to achieve the 2% savings. However, CUNY Central recently informed all campuses of a new savings target for FY 2024 due to additional anticipated fiscal tightening on the state and city level. Hostos now has a savings target of 3.5% for next year; the target for the college is not higher because we met our savings target on the initial reduction. Not all campuses were in a position to do the same.

Additionally, as part of the Savings Plan process, the University implemented a hiring freeze on February 3 and established a Vacancy Review Board (VRB). The VRB will be working with campus HR directors and reviewing all personnel action requests to ensure only critical positions are pursued; there are certain exceptions, such as the 595 full-time lecture lines allocated to the campuses.

Hostos must now develop a Savings Plan that outlines how it will meet its target. This will require every division to look thoroughly at their expenditures, both personnel and non-personnel costs, and make the necessary strategic decisions as to how they can reduce their spending. As the college progresses on this savings path, we will continue to update the community on its budget status.
