Best Laid Plans

What we envisioned for the first Saturday of the Holiday Market...
Shopping on a crisp December day, the joyful sounds of the Lehigh Valley Little Brass Band filling the air. Crackling fires at our warming stations, festive holiday decor, and a selection of guest vendors offering unique presents for the special people in your life.

But... it appears Mother Nature has some other plans and they include RAIN, and some other not so pleasant weather stuff. Our farmers and regular vendors will be ready for whatever Mother Nature throws our way (we're pretty good at pivoting by now) but keep in mind that some of our holiday vendors with more delicate merchandise may not attend if the weather is too harsh.

So be prepared for a potentially less festive, more 'power shopping' kinda day. Bundle up, don your jolliest rain slicker and your strongest market bags, and come ready to conquer - because it's been two weeks and we know your fridge must be devoid of all your favorite local foods by now. And maybe, just maybe, the sun will make an appearance. We are pretty charmed, you know ;-)

Fresh Produce
Phillips Farms
It’s time for the Holidays! Phillips Farms now has hand-decorated Christmas wreaths and door swags in all sizes, in addition to all sorts of fresh fruits and vegetables from the farm. Produce available at Phillips this week includes: Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, celery, leeks, spinach, kale, bok choy, broccoli rabe, arugula, radishes, scallions, fennel, beets, carrots, cabbage, fresh herbs, potatoes, onions, winter squash and much more. Apples varieties include: Honeycrisp, Evercrisp, Fuji, Macoun, Cameo, Braeburn, Pink Lady and Gold Rush, and don’t forget the freshly pressed apple cider. This is your last chance for fresh fragrant Eucalyptus bunches! Credit cards accepted.
Cabbage Throw Farm
The Cabbage Throw Farm season continues! Smaller offerings this time of year but still lots of sweet roots and fresh produce including salad turnips, radishes, baby carrots, loose beets, purple top turnips, lettuce, baby greens, Tatsoi, Napa Cabbage, Bok choy, flowering broccoli, parsley, red dandelion greens, and herbs.
Not too sure what to do with dandelion greens?
Try them raw blended into you favorite smoothie for a liver cleanse and a boost of vitamins and minerals, or in a salad with a honey dijon dressing, olives and pine nuts. You can remove some of the bitterness of the greens by sautéing in olive with garlic (just like broccoli rabe)
Scholl Orchards
Scholl's has apples of every sort for the perfect apple pie, rustic crisp or elegant tart for your Thanksgiving feast. Evercrisp, Ludacrisp and Rosalee are the stars this season and remember, "an apple a day, keeps the doctor away!" Stock up on fresh pressed apple cider for hot hot mulled cider on these chilly days or for a yummy cider gravy for your Breakaway Farms turkey. And don't forget some sweet, delicious pears for fall salads and cheese plates. If you purchase them Saturday, they'l be perfectly ripened for Thanksgiving day!
Veggies on the table this week are Brussels sprouts, cauliflower and broccoli; cabbage for crunchy slaws, sweet winter squashes, onions and super creamy red potatoes for your mashers!
Salvaterra's Gardens
Salvaterra's is excited to introduce two NEW baby green mixes to the roster this Saturday - Matt's Baby Kale mix and Spicy Winter Mix. Matt's baby kale mix is a mix of red and green kale varieties. Baby kale is very versatile and can be enjoyed in a salad, sauteed or in a soup! The fresh simple flavors in this recipe make a wonderful compliment to any main dish! https://www.onceuponachef.com/recipes/baby-kale-salad-with-lemon-parmesan-crispy-roasted-chickpeas.html

The Spicy Winter Mix is a mix of tatsoi, kale and mizuna. This mix has a spicy punch and a crunchy texture. Delicious with apples, cheese and a honey vinaigrette!

Also available this week... lettuce mix, arugula, spinach, kale (red, green, tuscan), collard greens, Swiss chard, pak choy, cabbage (red, green, nappa), carrots, red beets, red radishes, Hakurei turnips, spaghetti squash, and parsley.
Primordia Mushrooms
Primordia is coming to market with a plethora of Pioppinos! You've never had pioppinos you say?
These petite little morsels fry up crispy or pack a flavorful punch in any recipe. Leftover turkey and gravy over biscuits anyone? Turn boring leftovers into leftover magic with mushrooms!
Aquasprout Farms
Aquasprout is back! You may remember Stephen and Keith and their fresh, aquaponically grown microgreens from last year's winter market.

What is aquaponics? Aquaponics is the most sustainable form of farming - growing plants and fish together in a recirculating ecosystem. Neither can live without the other, but together they thrive. Mastering this environmentally friendly sustainable farming method allows AquaSprout Farms to produce greens and vegetables, year-round, using organic practices.

This week's offerings include summer crisp lettuce, butterhead lettuce, sunflower microgreens, green radish microgreens, and pea shoot microgreens.

MayaMam Weavers
MayaMam Weavers is one of the vendors joining us especially for the Holiday Market. MayaMam creates handwoven home goods and accessories inspired by the rich colors and patterns and traditional weaving techniques of Mayan culture.
MayaMam began in 2008 as a cooperative of women in Cajolá, a Mayan town in the western highlands of Guatemala. To overcome poverty, the women came together to explore ways to provide jobs within their community, rather than migrate to the U.S. and separate their families. Since then, then the cooperative has grown to 20 weavers and seamstresses, all earning fair trade wages while learning the skills to run a business. It also provides on-site childcare and adult literacy classes for the community. Mayamam Weavers in the U.S. is based in Morristown, NJ. They are proud members of the Fair Trade Federation, and proud to offer products that make a difference in the lives of women and provide a better future for their children. WEATHER PERMITTING
