More than 16,000 Applications Submitted through GoodSchoolsRoc

Charter schools across the nation saw a 7% increase in enrollment during the pandemic. In Rochester, demand for charter schools has skyrocketed with parents exercising their right to school choice with their fingers.

This year, GoodSchoolsRoc.org had more than 75,000 website visits - doubling last year’s count and demonstrating that many parents are looking for good schools. More than 16,000 applications were submitted through the GoodSchoolsRoc application portal, 17% more than the previous high. And in the month of August alone, GoodSchoolsRoc YouTube videos reached more than 230,000 views.

Demand is strong and on the rise. This fall, more than 8,500 students - or 28% percent of all of the city’s public school students - are enrolled in 27 Rochester charter school locations. Over 850 of those seats were filled this fall by Kindergarteners - setting children up for success and a path through graduation at a charter school, and the charter sector for continued growth.

Moving the Needle Podcast: Listen Now

move the needle

For the past few months, CEO Sebrone O. Johnson, along with and Dr. Paul Miller, CEO Charter Champions, have hosted guests to discuss challenges facing students and families in the city of Rochester. In a recent episode, they speak with Raheem Miller, director of Security, Safety & Student Discipline at UPREP Charter School for Young Men.

Like many Rochester charter school leaders and teachers, Miller was educated locally and employed by a district school before taking on his current role. Miller shares how UPREP creates a family for young men in our city, providing a place where they can feel safe, leave behind distractions and focus on their education.
