Finding Genius: RIASEC Rooms Being Designed at Sunnyside

One of my favorite quotes is borrowed from a basketball coach, Taylor Allan: “Find your art and make it your life. Then make it your service to the world.” This quote speaks to finding the unique spark and the genius within each of us and to dedicating the time and energy necessary to ignite that spark in service to others.

When I walk the halls of Sunnyside Education Center, this quote comes to mind often. In addition to our professional learning and event spaces, we have six classrooms, and each classroom is focused on a different RIASEC theme. For those who may be new to this acronym, Holland Codes, or RIASEC, are used widely in discussion of personal strengths and career interests. The RIASEC model is an invitation for students (and adults!) to develop self-awareness in relation to their strengths, their interests, and what they value in the world of work.

Our classrooms are inspired by visits to Cajon Valley Schools, and as mentioned above, each room aligns with a RIASEC theme:

Realistic Careers - The “Doers”

Investigative Careers - The “Thinkers”

Artistic Careers - The “Creators”

Social Careers - The “Helpers”

Enterprising Careers - The “Persuaders”

Conventional Careers - The “Organizers”

This semester, we are working diligently to design experiences that will inspire students to think about how their strengths, interests, and values can align with a future career path. The pictures below provide a sneak peek into our RIASEC rooms, and we look forward to sharing these rooms and these career exploration activities with the educators and students in East Central Indiana!

“The RIASEC framework . . . creates a connective tissue among everyone in your system, so everyone can be speaking a common language of self and the world, so every child can know there is a place in the world for them.”

EVENTS SPOTLIGHT

Textbook Caravan

Join us at ECESC on April 9, 2024, for a textbook caravan that will include multiple subjects. ECESC is working with publishing companies to include the subject areas our schools have expressed an interest/need, but participation will depend on the textbook companies.

We will have a vendor hall where the textbook companies will be able to set up booths and be available to share information with your team, and vendors will have individual sessions to share information about their products to small groups.

We are asking schools to pre-register with the number of educators they plan to have attend and the subjects they would like to have available. This will allow us to plan with the vendors. A final registration requesting names of those attending and a schedule selection will be sent closer to the event.

PLC Summit Planning with Carrie Rosebrock

Planning, implementing, and/or strengthening your professional learning communities’ structures requires time and focus from admin teams. Many teams use the spring semester to plan and process their next steps for summer training or fall implementation. This session geared toward school leaders will provide support and time for administrators to plan their PLCs. We have partnered with author and district alignment coach, Carrie Rosebrock, to give you access to the content you need to guide your PLC work in-house.

Learning Intentions:

  • Reflect on current PLC implementation practices and determine areas for improvement or alignment for ‘24-’25
  • Create your own in-house, district led PLC Leadership Summit for 2024 (or 2025)
  • Clarify and determine needed structures to support your PLC leaders and teams throughout the school year
