Letter from the Guest Editor

Welcome to the end of the Spring 2024 Semester

Badri Roysam

University of Houston

Dear Colleagues,

I hope your Spring semester went well, and your students are excited about their upcoming Summer Internships and new jobs. Notwithstanding the turmoil in the Technology sector, the economy continues to be on a roll, with more openings than applicants. As a result, ECE students are receiving excellent starting salaries and, in many cases, sign-up bonuses as well. The market for graduates with data science, machine learning, robotics, semiconductors, and artificial intelligence (AI) backgrounds is extremely competitive, to say the least. The Manufacturing and Defense sectors are starting to come alive as well. All these megatrends are behind the enrollment turnaround that we are witnessing.

It was great meeting you at the 2024 ECEDHA Annual Conference and ECExpo, in beautiful Tucson, Arizona. In this issue of Source, we are pleased to spotlight two highlights from the conference, one regarding the CHIPS and Science Act, and its direct ramifications to workforce development at ECE/EECS departments, and one on Quantum communication and computation Technologies.

New Department Chair Spotlight

Aleksandar Milenković

Professor and Chair of Electrical and Computer Engineering Department

University of Alabama in Huntsville

My name is Aleksandar Milenković, Professor and Chair of Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. I do research and teach courses in computer architecture, embedded systems, integrated circuits, and hardware design.

Q. What inspired you to take on the role of department chair?

A. I embraced the role of Department Chair to serve our community—students, faculty, and the university at large. This position offers challenging yet rewarding opportunities to foster success and growth.

Q. In your role as department chair, what did you find to be the most surprising or unexpected?

A. Despite years in academia, spanning from Belgrade University then Dublin City University to the University of Alabama in Huntsville from 2001, the unpredictability and administrative duties, especially the volume of paperwork, were unexpected challenges.

Q. What are your immediate priorities and goals for your department?

A. Our department aims to increase enrollment at both undergraduate and graduate levels, increase the number of faculty, enhance curricula, and broaden research activities.

Q. What do you believe is the most essential trait for a department chair to possess, and how do you plan to cultivate that trait?

A. Leadership by example is paramount. I strive to inspire and create opportunities for others, fostering an environment where everyone can excel.

Q. What do you most look forwared to in participating as an ECEDHA member?

A. I am looking forward to attending ECEDHA annual conferences and networking with peers. Although every institution is unique, we face many common challenges and we can learn from each other by sharing experiences and ideas.

Q. What is a fun fact about yourself?

A. I am an avid sports enthusiast, enjoying biking, hiking, basketball, and soccer. I have passion for art, particularly abstract art, and I use every opportunity to visit museums to admire works by Kandinsky, Mondrian, Rothko, and Pollock. I dabbled in abstract painting myself.

“My interest in engineering started as a kid. I was always fascinated with with airplanes. I used to watch the YouTube channel called Real Engineering. They would show a lot of fun and exciting engineering experiments. I also like to learn about aircraft. Some of my favorites are the Supermarine Spitfire, SR-71 Blackbird, and many modern military jets. I realized that the people who design these planes have specialized in engineering, which led me to consider pursuing a similar career path.

Wanting to become an engineer motivated me to improve my math skills because I know the importance of math in engineering. Class subjects like calculus and physics have been challenging for me, but I have been able to get help from my classmates and my professors.

My favorite part of my engineering classes has been designing and experimenting with aircraft characteristics, like the aerodynamic aspects. I enjoy the challenge of applying various formulas to solve real-world engineering problems, such as calculating the drag of the aircraft and understanding the effects of different variables like air density, takeoff weight, and cruising speed on the plane's structure. After I finish my associate’s degree from San Jacinto College, I want to finish my bachelor’s degree and maybe end up working for a place like NASA. ‘
