The Electrical Contractors’ Association of City of Chicago (ECA) Student Committee has again recommended that the National Electrical Contractors Association - Illinois Institute of Technology (NECA-IIT) Student Chapter pursue the Electrical Contracting Innovation Challenge sponsored by NECA and ELECTRI International. This year’s ECIC primarily concerns BIM use, among other areas concerning a project. The NECA-IIT Student Chapter has accepted the challenge and has begun in earnest during their first Student Chapter session through the IIT Interprofessional Program (IPRO) class that started on Thursday, January 11, 2024. We thank Tim Vock, BIM Manager, Gibson Electric An Emcor Company (pictured on the left), for his special presentation regarding BIM in Electrical Construction. He detailed various aspects of BIM, including tools used as: Revit, Navisworks, Trimble. He noted that BIM puts the model at the center of project components, including: Installation information, Facility Management information, Code requirements, Design intent, Fabrication information and Equipment information. He also noted that BIM benefits the overall project for the following: Increases accuracy – reduces work, planning is crucial for just in time delivery and install, aids in Safety with a controlled environment, helps maintain schedule / benchmarks, helps the environment as less waste in material. Currently, a number of ECA members will be visiting / assisting the students in the weeks ahead with special presentations, as well as jobsite tour(s) on projects utilizing BIM. Again, we thank Tim for his assistance and welcome ECA members for their input as the project progresses!  Please contact the ECA office for further information.

CSC SAFETY UPDATE

Excavation Safety:

FREE Training in the New Year

Update by: Robert Lahey, Chicagoland Construction Safety Council

The Electrical Contractors’ Association enjoys a partnership with the Construction Safety Council, as both organizations share a commitment to enhancing and preserving the well-being of IBEW Local 134 employers and employees. Training programs are discounted on a variety of topics in order to make them affordable and accessible throughout the Chicagoland region. In 2024, this partnership is expanding to include a new opportunity for electrical, energy, and communication contractors to participate in Essentials in Excavation Safety. The curriculum has been developed by the Construction Safety Council and is offered at no cost - thanks to federal grant funding from the U.S. Labor Department’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

Essentials in Excavation Safety is available in English or Spanish on any day at any time. The Construction Safety Council hosts training delivery every month in Hillside, Illinois. In addition, instruction is available upon request by any ECA member. The four-hour program includes interactive discussions, equipment demonstrations, and virtual reality simulations to help ensure safety for electricians engaged in trenching operations. The Council’s instructors are subject matter experts skilled in sharing their knowledge and experience with fellow construction professionals. The course content also supports the OSHA National Emphasis Program on Trenching and Excavation, which became effective in October 2018 but, unfortunately, remains relevant today. Tragically, the number of U.S. fatalities resulting from underground work has more than doubled since 2021 - with dozens of casualties reported each year.

The Construction Safety Council and ECA are working together to prevent injuries and losses that result from trench cave-ins. This half-day training program provides a solution that is not only long lasting, but also lifesaving.  Make it a New Year’s Resolution to attend for FREE or schedule a session for your employees. Enrollment in Essentials in Excavation Safety is now open at www.buildsafe.org or call (708) 449-8604 to request on-demand delivery at a convenient time and location.

Robert Lahey is the President & CEO of the Chicagoland Construction Safety Council located in Hillside, Illinois. For more than 30 years, the Council has delivered programs and services in support of its mission to improve human safety performance through education and training. Learn more at www.buildsafe.org.

Construction Industry Alliance for Suicide Prevention

It is an unfortunate fact that construction has the highest rate of suicide of any industry in America. We lose about 53 out of every 100,000 members of our industry EVERY YEAR to suicide. We are four times the average of other industries. We have a crisis in construction and we need to do something about it. You can visit the Construction Industry Alliance for Suicide Prevention website and learn more. We urge all to take the pledge to STAND UP for suicide prevention and address it as a health and safety priority.
