E-SNAP: March Sunset

As I’m sure you’re aware, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) emergency allotments are ending in Wisconsin and Minnesota on March 1. “E-SNAP” as it was often referred, ensured a higher SNAP benefit level to people since the early days of the pandemic. It’s estimated that this reduction could result in a $90 per person per month reduction in benefits. This may exacerbate food insecurity for many people in our region, especially those who ordinarily—under non-pandemic circumstances—receive a relatively low SNAP benefit amount, such as seniors. If your site runs low on food supply, please reach out to us so we’re able to assist with your food resource needs. In addition, please feel free to refer program participants to the Find Food section of our website to locate other programs in our region that might be able to assist, including our Nutrition for Seniors Program.

March: Product Sourcing Update

We continue to see encouraging trends related to our nationally and regionally donated sourced product this year. One of these encouraging trends is the return of “bulk” foods. Bulk products are donated by manufacturers and others without their pretty packaging, like a branded box or bag. Instead, they might be donated in a large tote (saving the donor expense) which requires re-packing and labeling by our volunteers in our specially designed aseptic clean room. It’s the first time since the pandemic began that we’re seeing a regular supply of these items again. You’ll soon be seeing re-packed items (like cereal, rice, crackers, beans, etc.) in Agency Express. As a reminder to agency staff and volunteers, food products may only be re-packed in aseptic clean rooms. If you do not have this type of food-safe room on-site, product re-pack is prohibited.
