What an incredible month it has been! We went from a solar eclipse last month to the Northern Lights last week.
As we continue to ease our way through spring, the City of Highland Heights observed Arbor Day on Friday, April 26th, with the planting of a beautiful American Tulip tree in the Community Park. I want to extend my sincere appreciation to the Highland Heights Green Task Force for their contribution towards the purchase of this year’s tree and to our Service Department staff members for planting this beautiful tree.
Our Service Department keeps very busy this time of year, especially as we prepare for the summer season. Our staff has been busy enhancing the grounds at the Municipal Complex and Community Park, in addition to cleaning and getting the pool ready to open. I am always proud of the hard work our Service Department staff members provide to our community and residents each day.
Please join us for our 29th annual Memorial Day Observance Ceremony on Monday, May 27th, at 10:00 a.m., as we honor and remember the men and women who gave their lives while serving in the United States Armed Forces. The ceremony will take place at the Veterans Peace Memorial, located adjacent to the Fire Department. A Ribbon Cutting Ceremony will take place at 9:45 a.m. to commemorate the renovations and enhancements to this sacred piece of land.
As we recognize Memorial Day, it is also the time for us to honor our current or former residents who have served our country through the Hometown Heroes Banner Program. Beginning next week, our Service Department staff will begin hanging the banners along Highland and Miner Roads. Applications for the 2025 Hometown Heroes Banner Program will be accepted beginning next month.
I am pleased to share the Highland Heights Fire Department was featured in the news this past week. Highland Heights firefighters were given the Grail Galleri Test, which is a blood test that can detect 50 different types of cancers. Firefighters are at a higher risk for cancers due to the chemicals they are exposed to as part of their job. The program was conducted in partnership with University Hospitals. The segment was covered by WKYC - Channel 3 news and other local news stations. You can watch the full story here.
Summer is almost here and the fun is about to begin. Mark your calendars as the Highland Heights Community Pool will open for the summer season on Friday, June 7th at 12:30 p.m. (weather permitting) and our first Music at the Gazebo concert will be held on Wednesday, June 26th at 7:00 p.m. with Al Bucco & Michael George; The Summit. In addition, if you are a runner or walker looking to get some exercise, consider participating in the Rainbow Run/Walk at the Highland Heights Community Park on Saturday, June 8th, sponsored by Mayfield High School Student Council in partnership with University Hospital's Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital. For full details and more information, visit Rainbow Run Cleveland.
Enjoy the upcoming holiday weekend as we begin the unofficial start to summer!

Now that the weather is warming up, we can expect more activity during the day and night. Usually that activity may involve having friends or family visiting and parking on the street, or juveniles out late. We want to remind all of you of our overnight parking laws and juvenile curfew.
What is Highland Heights’ overnight parking law?
The City of Highland Heights Codified Ordinance 351.15 prohibits parking on city streets between 3:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m.
If you have an exigent circumstance that requires parking a vehicle on a city street overnight, please call the Highland Heights Police Department at 440-442-1221 for consideration. Generally, temporary, short-term permission will be granted if you have guests and do not have room in your driveway or your driveway is undergoing construction.

What are Highland Heights juvenile curfew laws?
The City of Highland Heights Codified Ordinance 509.09 details the curfew laws. No child under the age of twelve years shall be out in public between the hours of darkness to dawn. No child twelve to fifteen years of age shall be out in public between the hours of 11:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. No child sixteen or seventeen years of age shall be out in public between the hours of 12:00 midnight and 6:00 a.m.
Curfew does not apply to children accompanied by a parent or guardian or where the child is on an emergency errand or legitimate business directed by the parent or guardian.

Part-time Police Officers Wanted
The Highland Heights Police Department is in need of Auxiliary Police Officers. This position is a non-sworn part-time job. Duties would generally include helping out with our Lyndhurst Municipal Court Docket and park patrol duties in the summer.
We are also in need of part-time patrol officers. This is a sworn position and duties would include all the same functions as a full-time sworn officer.

Fire Department Hydrant Maintenance
REMINDER...semi-annual fire hydrant maintenance will be conducted during the months of May and June. If your water is discolored, run your cold tap water until it clears.
Any hydrant found to be non-functional is replaced by Cleveland Water. After a hydrant is replaced, the soil around the hydrant needs to settle for several weeks prior to finish grading. Once the ground has settled, Cleveland Water or a sub-contractor will make the final repairs to the lawn.
As a reminder, the Cleveland Water Department is responsible for all water line and hydrant repairs.

Fireworks are prohibited in the City of Highland Heights!
Despite changes in Ohio Law allowing for the sale and use of fireworks, Highland Heights Codified Ordinance 1519.4 prohibits the possession, sale, and discharge of fireworks, excluding novelty items.
Anyone found in violation of this code can be cited. Please leave fireworks to the professionals!

Just a reminder with the amount of rain that we have had this spring, now is a good time to walk around your yard to check ditches and swales for obstructions. Keeping these areas clean of debris expedites the flow of rainwater away from your property, as well as your neighbor's property.
Also, with the amount of rain and moisture in the air, you may be noticing algae building up on the siding outside of your home. Here are several tips for eliminating algae or mold outside of your home. First, discourage the growth in the first place by exposing the area to sunlight. Trim back bushes, shrubs and vines from your home that shadow the area that are keeping the siding damp. Apply oxygen bleach, not chlorine bleach to the area and allow the solution to sit on the siding per manufacturer’s directions. Pressure clean from the bottom up and rinse from the top down to avoid streaking. You may want to cover nearby shrubbery to avoid damage to the greenery.
