Christmas Offering for St. Bede's

As you prepare to celebrate Christmas this year,
please remember St. Bede's
on your Christmas list
and consider making a Christmas offering
to support the ongoing
mission and ministries of the parish.

or you may mail your offering
or drop it off in St. Bedes' secure mailbox
at the Midvale Road entrance.

You may also use this link to keep current
on your 2020 pledge or to make any other
gifts or offerings to St. Bede's online.

Oh, my goodness, people! The pageant video clips are pouring in and they are SO wonderful! What a balm of joy for our souls this pageant is going to be this year.

And we have room for more sheep and angels - no script necessary! This is for children, adults, grandparents, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, neighbors - anyone from near or far!

To participate:

1) Make a horizontal recording of the person saying "Glory to God" OR "Baaaa!"
2) Go to wetransfer.com on the browser of the device you used to record.
3) Follow the very simple instructions to upload the video from the device.
4) Send the link to asali@stbedes.org by Sunday evening, December 20.

Creative costuming is adorable but not required.

Director of Children's and Family Ministries

Christmas Flowers to Share

We are all missing the beautiful Christmas Flowers that bring joy to our Christmas worship celebration, BUT...

Our wonderful Nancy Ward and Ray Callaway are working to make up several dozen small Christmas mini-arrangements. You will be able to come to St. Bede's and collect for yourself or pick one up and deliver it to another St. Bede's parishioner who might need a little extra Christmas joy.

Look for more information about pick-up times in your Saturday worship supplement email and in the special Tuesday edition of E-News that will be sent out next week.

If you would like to deliver a mini-arrangement to another parishioner, you can contact Muriel Diguette (mdiguette@stbedes.org) and she can help connect you with a parishioner who might enjoy having one delivered.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU,

December is upon us.
As hard as it is to believe.
And while all are tested,
We can still receive,
The love and joy of friendships
Shared virtually apart
So distances are shortened,
And connections warm the heart.

Let's gather for Bunco on Zoom on December 20 at 6:30. We have a game of sorts to play and welcome ideas of other games that might be fun!  But mostly, just come and spend a little time catching up and visiting with each other. We will not be doing our gift exchange this year, so save those neat and funny gifts for next December!

Your Memorial Garden Committee
has been hard at work!

Jim Helms worked with
Jeff Swoope, Dixie Snider, and Drew Spires
to assemble and install new benches.
Please take a moment to stop by
and admire this place
of beauty, rest, and contemplation.

Thank you Jim, Jeff, Dixie, and Drew!

Join us in "Keeping the Faith"
through our 2020 ParishTime Capsule

We invite everyone to participate in our "Keeping the Faith" project!  If you have not yet submitted a reflection for our 2020 time capsule, now is a great time to act.  If you need a little inspiration, you may want to consider the following questions to help get you thinking:

  • What would you like to tell future generations of St. Bede's parishioners about your experience of the Covid-19 pandemic?  How have you felt God's presence during this time?

  • Scripture is filled with assurances of God's presence in times of uncertainty.  What passage(s) have been meaningful to you during the Covid-19 pandemic?

  • Future parishioners may also face times of hardship during their journey together.  What words of hope do you have to offer them from 2020?

  • Advent is a time of preparation in which we anticipate Christ's coming.  Where, how, and through whom have you witnessed the light of Christ in the world during the darkness of the pandemic?

And remember, we welcome other forms of reflection if writing is not your thing.  Decorate a mask, sketch an image or submit a photograph that reflects your experience.

Questions?  Please email our seminarian Carmie McDonald at cmcdonald@stbedes.org if you need more information.
She'd love to hear from you!

Healing Our Racism Book Discussion Group
Meeting Time - 4th Monday of each month at 2:00 pm
on ZOOM

Monday, December 28th at 2:00 pm

Please join Muriel Diguette and other members/friends of St. Bede's to discuss current books pertaining to the issues of racism and white privilege.

We will meet the 4th Monday of each month at 2:00 pm.

For our December meeting on December 28th we will be reading  Passionate for Justice: Ida B. Wells as Prophet for Our Time by Catherine Meeks & Nibs Strope

"In Passionate for Justice, we find a compass that points us to the future, where we can each give voice and action to justice, equity, and life-giving community. Ida Wells would have had it no other way."
--From the foreword by Stacey Abrams, 2018 Democratic Nominee for Governor of Georgia

Ida B. Wells was a powerful churchwoman and witness for justice and equity from 1878 to 1931. Born enslaved, her witness flowed through the struggles for justice in her lifetime, especially in the intersections of African Americans, women, and those who were poor. Her life is a profound witness for faith-based work of visionary power, resistance, and resilience for today's world, when the forces of injustice stand in opposition to progress.

These are exciting and dangerous times. Boundaries that previously seemed impenetrable are now being crossed. This book is a guide for the current state of affairs in American culture, enlivened by the historical perspective of Wells' search for justice.

The authors are an African-American woman and a child of white supremacy. Both have dedicated themselves to working, writing, and developing ministries oriented toward justice, equity, and mercy. This book can be used in all settings, but most especially in churches (pastors and other church leaders, study groups), seminaries, and universities.

If you want to go ahead and order books for future discussions:

January 25: The Cross and the Lynching Tree by James H. Cone
February 22: Between The World and Me, by Ta-Nehisi Coates
March 22: The Warmth of Other Suns by Isabel Wilkerson
April 26: The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander
May 24: The Color of Law by Richard Rothstein
June 28: Uncomfortable Conversations with a Black Man by Emmanuel Acho

Mostly Mysteries Book Group on Zoom

The Mostly Mysteries Book Group is continuing to meet on Zoom. If you would like to take part, please contact Connie Coralli and she will send you the link.

For our January 25th meeting at 7:00pm we will be reading  The Given Day by Dennis Lehane.

This beautifully written novel of American history tells the story of two families-one black, one white-swept up in a maelstrom of revolutionaries and anarchists, immigrants and ward bosses, Brahmins and ordinary citizens, all engaged in a battle for survival and power at the end of World War I.

Vestry Establishes
Community Emergency Assistance Fund

In addition to all of the wonderful ways that the Community Engagement Team is leading us in supporting community ministry partners (locally, churchwide, and globally) during this critical time, the Vestry has established a Community Emergency Assistance Fund to help people within the greater St. Bede's community with food assistance during the current public health crisis.  This fund will be administered confidentially by the clergy in a similar way as their normal discretionary funds, but will be used exclusively to help with food assistance during this crisis.

If you would like to contribute to this fund you may do so through Realm Giving and selecting "Community Emergency Assistance Fund" from the "Fund" drop-down menu. You may also mail a gift to St. Bede's designated for "Community Emergency Assistance Fund".

UPDATE of December 3: We have collected around $6,700 and distributed over $4,200 in assistance though food and utility support for individuals and families so far during the current public health crisis. The current balance of the fund stands at around $2,500 and new needs continue to present themselves. A dedicated group of members work with Fabio to help identify need and deliver food.  Thank you to all who have contributed!

If you have questions about this offering to the greater St. Bede's community or if you are in need of food assistance or know someone who is, please contact either the Rev'd Caroline Magee or the Rev'd Fabio Sotelo.

Greetings, Episcopal Relief & Development Ministry Partners.

Thank you for all you do to support the work of our staff and partners. We appreciate each and every one of you and all you do for Episcopal Relief & Development. You are in our prayers and in the prayers of an ever-growing network of faithful people who support our work around the globe.

We know this because analytics tell us that prayers are the most engaging content Episcopal Relief & Development posts on social media. Prayer posts are the most liked and the most shared and because of this, we know that our online community prays for our work, our partners, our staff and our volunteers. Some who encounter these prayers may not know much, if anything about Episcopal Relief & Development. We want to give those new friends a way to learn more about our work. To that end, we have created a new digital experience  that invites deeper engagement with our prayers and our work. We invite you to share these prayers with whomever manages your diocesan or congregation's social media as well as your own social media friends and followers
.

As hurricane season is drawing to a close, we have created this curated prayer experience to share prayers for all of those who were impacted by or responded to hurricanes in 2020. To share a prayer, simply click on the "Amen" at the end of each prayer, and you will be given an opportunity to share the prayers on Facebook or Twitter. If you would like to join the network of those who pray for our work, sign up at the bottom of the page to become an Episcopal Relief & Development Prayer Partner. This means that whenever new prayers are posted, you will receive them in your email inbox.

Future prayer experiences will expand to include other themes like liturgical seasons and our work with Women, Children and Climate. As we grow this tool, we hope to expand our network of those who pray for our work as well.

Thank you again for all that you do and for sharing this new prayer experience with your social media community.

Prayerfully,
Sean McConnell
