Popcorn Theology on Zoom

We'll be watching 42, to remember and to give thanks for the life, courage and artistic gifts of the recently deceased Chadwick Boseman.
42 is set in 1946. This is the year in which the owner of the Brooklyn Dodgers, Branch Rickey (Harrison Ford), decided it was time for him to take a stand against Major League Baseball's infamous color line. He and his colleagues quietly conducted a national search, looking for person who was not only an exceptional player but also one with the forbearance and resilience to be the first black man to play in the Major Leagues. Branch Rickey signed Jackie Robinson (Chadwick Boseman) to the team. This deal placed both men in the crosshairs of the public, the press and other players. Facing unabashed racism from every side, Jackie Robinson found within himself the capacity to meet the racism head on with tremendous courage. He was able to remain rooted in his self-worth so he could continue to let his gift and talent on the baseball field gradually win over fans and his teammates, silencing his critics and changing the world by changing the game of baseball.
PG-13, about 2 hours and 8 minutes with the end credits. The film was released in 2013 and stars Chadwick Boseman, Harrison Ford, Nicole Beharie, and Andre Holland.

Update on the Vitamins and other Medicines collected for Cuba
Although it seems like a lifetime ago, last March I was packing to get ready to fly to Havana for the 86th Annual Convention of the Organization of Episcopal Women of Cuba (OMEC). St. Bede's parishioners outdid themselves by donating vitamins and medicine to be given to delegates who in turn would distribute the much needed medicines in their local communities. Of course, COVID-19 entered our lives, and the Convention was cancelled. You donated over 8435 vitamins (half of which were for children) and 5964 other medicines (aspirins, Ibuprofen, Tylenol, etc.) Those same medicines and vitamins have now been distributed to needy families here in our area. Father Fabio commissioned a group of parishioners with making sure neighbors and parish families received the medicine. Thank you to all who donated and to the parishioners who distributed the vitamins and medicine!

4TH ANNUAL HAWGIN' FOR HAITI

Forging Futures is excited to continue our annual BBQ fundraiser in a socially distanced, safe way! This year, BBQ will be ordered to go! Orders will be available for pickup for you to enjoy safely in the comfort of your own home or those of family and friends. BBQ choices will still include your favorites: pork, brisket, and chicken. What could be better than watching college football and eating the best BBQ in Atlanta all from your home? As always, 100% of the proceeds will be used to support the education of the Haitian children attending our 5 schools.
This is a huge college football weekend, so let us do all the cooking for you! Pickup will be available in at two times: 11:00am for the early games (lunch) and 2:00pm for the afternoon/evening (dinner) games.
$150 for a family pack (feeds 4-6) includes your choice of two meats (pulled pork, chopped brisket, or pulled chicken) and two sides (beans, cole slaw, or roasted gouda street corn).
$300 for a party pack (feeds 8 - 10) includes all three meats, all three sides, and a bonus...banana pudding!

Covid-19 has exacted an enormous price in Haiti as it has here. This funding event is cruicial for Forging Futures and for Haiti. Our continued support of our schools depends on this BBQ. Team St. Bede is forming to join the 2020 Georgia 2-day VIRTUAL Walk for Breast Cancer Experience. Virtual means you will walk a total of 30 miles (or whatever distance is feasible for you) but not necessarily in a group and over a period of 2 weeks. To join Team St. Bede, register to walk, and/or donate click on this link:
Beginning Monday, September 21st, you can start racking up your miles for the 2020 2-Day Experience on MoveSpring, our virtual walk platform! You'll still be traveling 30 miles throughout Atlanta, and will still "see" some of our wonderful partners at B'Rest Stops (called "Milestones" in MoveSpring") approximately every 2.5 miles! Each Milestone will unlock video or picture messages to help bring the 2-Day experience to you wherever you are!
MoveSpring works with tracking devices (like FitBit, Apple Watch, etc.) or even just your cell phone to track your steps/miles! You can compete on the mileage leaderboard, and, on the website, there are some really great ideas on how to get support from donors by incorporating MoveSpring features!
On Sunday, October 4th, you can head out with other participants for the final mile, culminating in a Facebook Live Closing Ceremonies Experience at 12:00 pm, so that we can all celebrate together! More details TBA on website as we get closer!
Registration is only $35 (includes access to virtual platform, Victory t-shirt, credentials, and year button), and there are no minimum fundraising requirements for 2020.

Vestry Establishes
Community Emergency Assistance Fund
In addition to all of the wonderful ways that the Community Engagement Team is leading us in supporting community ministry partners (locally, churchwide, and globally) during this critical time, the Vestry has established a Community Emergency Assistance Fund to help people within the greater St. Bede's community with food assistance during the current public health crisis. This fund will be administered confidentially by the clergy in a similar way as their normal discretionary funds, but will be used exclusively to help with food assistance during this crisis.
UPDATE of September 24: We have collected around $5,800 and distributed over $2,800 in assistance though food and utility support for individuals and families so far during the current public health crisis. The current balance of the fund stands at around $3,000 and new needs continue to present themselves. A dedicated group of members work with Fabio to help identify need and deliver food. Thank you to all who have contributed!
