PEOPLE GOING PLACES

IUA's new CEO

Jihoon Kim, LCSW takes the helm on March 1.

"I am excited to bring my experience and deep understanding of advocacy to strategically advance the goals and influence of IUA's member organizations."

Trainer Registry's new Emeritus Member

Master Trainer and CCAR's consequential Executive Director, Phil Valentine, inducted. "Thank you. I'm honored and deeply moved."

Announces his retirement later in 2024

ASAP's longtime Executive Director, John Coppola, steps down on March 1 to welcome Jihoon Kim as inaugural CEO of InUnity Alliance, the non-profit created via the merger of ASAP with the Coalition for Behavioral Health. The merger was a personal vision of John's and his personal advocacy a deciding factor in its adoption by ASAP membership.

Jihoon Kim brings a record of distinguished national service in the mental health system, most recently in senior postings in Washigton DC and Albany, to his new role.

"We designed an Emeritus Membership of the ASAP-NYCB Trainer Registry in recognition of Phil Valentine's tremendous achievement in promoting recovery and developing recovery coaching within a community organization he built just about from the ground up," said Trainer Registry Convenor, Jason Page.

Registry Program co-founder and manager, Ruth Riddick, brought this announcement to the CCAR Annual Conference in Hartford in February. "I'm thrilled we were able to recognize Phil in this way," she said.

NYCB's new President

"It's an honor," says incoming NYCB Board President, Luis Laboy, who chaired his first meeting on February 21. A well-known harm-reduction advocate in his Bronx community, Luis proudly introduces himself as an NYCB certificant and joined the NYCB Board in 2022. He will be familiar from his ongoing role at the Alumni Association, formerly at OASAS and now at FOR-NY.

TWO NEW SPECIALTY CERTIFICATIONS launch on March 1

"Developing a formal, professional certification is a complex process," says Doug Rosenberry who leads technical development. "We're very grateful to the very many experts from the community who contributed to developing the Criminal Justice Supported Recovery (CJSR) peer certification and the Peer Supervision Professional (PSP) certification, a new specialty certification for individuals from any professional background who supervise peers in any setting."

Doug also thanks Dr. Rachael Jin Bee Tan of the University of Colorado "whose psychometric expertise is a core part of any legally-defensible certification development process - and she's a real pleasure to work with!" Dr. Tan was referred to ASAP in 2018 by the International Certification & Reciprocity Consortium (IC&RC), originators of the NYS "CRPA" Peer Recovery certification and developers of the exam taken by all CRPA candidates. DID YOU KNOW? Elisabeth Kranson shares about Certification Verification:

"Employers, job interviewers, supervisors, trainers, certificants, the public can confirm whether any individual is certified by entering the name of that individual. Certification status is public information and we have a whole site devoted to verification - see, https://www.asapnys.org/verify-nycb-certification/. If a record appears, that individual is a certificant in good standing. Simple!" For more information, email Elisabeth Kranson, Director of Certification at ekranson@iuany.org.
