Evil Triumphs

Our Gospel reading for tomorrow is Mark 6:14-29. It is an interesting portion of Mark because it only mentions Jesus in passing at the beginning of the reading and focuses on other characters. The main characters of the reading are Herod, his wife and  ex sister-in-law, Herodias, and Herodias’ daughter. These are not a nice bunch of church-going folk. In fact, these are some of the most evil people we meet in all of Scripture.

This Herod is the son of the Herod who slaughtered the boy babies of Bethlehem. He is known as Antipas while his father was Herod the Great. Herod Antipas was a chip off the old block. Herodias was married to Herod Antipas but had been married to his brother. But wait, there’s more. Herodias was the daughter of Herod Antipas’ other brother, so both brothers married their niece.

It gets worse. Herodias’ daughter danced for Herod’s birthday party. In Mark 6:22 Herod calls her a “girl.” If you dig into the use of this word in the original, the dancer was probably 12 or 13 years old. This family was not the Cleavers of Leave It to Beaver fame.

This is a group of evil people who did an evil thing and apparently suffered no consequences. They were responsible for the murder of John the Baptist. It is a horrible story.

Sadly, the world is full of horrible stories where evil triumphs. It may make us question where God is when we see evil succeed. Where was God at work in Herod’s palace on the day John was beheaded?

This can be a personal question today when we face a crisis caused by evil succeeding. I am confident God has an answer for your questions about evil in the world and the apparent triumph of evil. I don’t want to give away the ending, so let’s talk more tomorrow! I’m looking forward to being back at Mount Calvary and seeing you.

In Christ,

Pastor Dan Czaplewski

A NEW BIBLE STUDY BEGINS

What Happens When I Die?

We ask ultimate questions, for which God has given us penultimate answers: What does that mean?

How has our view of the afterlife been influenced

by Greek philosophy, rather than the Bible?

What does a resurrection body mean?

These and other questions will be discussed

in this Bible Class series.

If you have a question you want answered, email

pastor@mtcalvary-mke.org.

JOIN US FOR THIS STUDY - ALL ARE WELCOME!

These are stand alone studies, one day, one lesson, so you are still able to attend.

Volunteer Opportunity

We have an opportunity to serve our neighbors - can you help out? On the first Wednesday of each month St. Joseph's hospital distributes food boxes to seniors in need and in the afternoon cares for expectant mothers. We can provide a box of vegetables to each client from our farm. BUT, we need some help packing these boxes. This would take one or two people about 90 minutes on Tuesday (near noon time) and one or two people about 60 minutes on Wednesday morning. Contact Pastor Dan Czaplewski for more information. This would be Tuesday, August 6, Wednesday, August 7, Tuesday, September 3, and Wednesday, September 4.

God puts gifts into our lives in order that we might use them, to honor Him and spread the name of Jesus. As you consider building a legacy or leaving a legacy gift, are you more focused on being remembered, or blessing with God’s gifts? The real joy comes in using God’s blessings. Your LCMS Foundation Gift Planning Counselor can help you plan for gifts to family and gifts to ministry.
