Holy Apostles Welcomes The Rev. Kaitlin McCallister

We are pleased to introduce the Rev. Katlin McCallister as the new Priest-in-Charge of Holy Apostles in Hilo. From the Church's Weekly Letter: 

On Sunday, October 1, the Rev. Katlin McCallister will celebrate Sunday Services with the parish for the first time as our new Priest-in-Charge. Rev. Katlin comes to us from New Jersey, Arizona, and Honolulu, where she spent the last year in a chaplain re sidency program at Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children. 

Rev. Katlin received her Master in Divinity from Virginia Theological Seminary, and her Bachelor of Science in Family Studies and Human Development at the University of Arizona. She grew up in South River, New Jersey, attending Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, and after ordination to the priesthood served as an associate priest at St. Alban's Episcopal Church in Tucson, Arizona. Welcome, Katlin!

The Rev. Matthew Lukens Heads to Michigan

The Rev. Matthew Lukens will be heading to the University of Michigan's Canterbury House where he will be the new Acting Chaplain. He will be helping guide and shape campus ministry into the future. 

Lukens served as an Associate Priest at the Parish of St. Clement in Honolulu, and most recently as Vicar at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Kailua.  Best wishes Matthew!

49th Annual Meeting of Convention

Nominations Posted:  Information on the nominees  for the different governance committees has been posted on the Convention webpage HERE.  Although the deadline has passed for posting in the Convention booklet, nominations can still be made online until October 6, with special instructions that can be found on the webpage under "Nominations." After October 6, nomination submissions can be made on the floor during the meeting.

Registration Reminder:  Early registration has passed. Current fee is $85.00, and late registration (after September 29) will be $105.00. To register, click HERE .

Travel Arrangements: If you are an authorized traveler on a neighbor island, remember to book your air travel. E-mail airtravel@episcopalhawaii.org to make your reservation.

St. Augustine's Annual Bazaar & Silent Auction

St. Augustine's Episcopal Church in Kohala will be holding their annual bazaar on Saturday, September 30, 2017, from 8:30 AM-1:00 PM. There will be live entertainment, a kiddos' ring toss game, concessions, guided tours, savory food and baked goods, a variety of plants and vegetables, flower arrangements (including pre-sale poinsetta tickets), white elephant, bargains at their "unique boutique" and much much more! 

They have also launched their online silent auction HERE, accepting bids through September 30, at 12:30 PM.  Shipping is not included in your bid, but special arrangements can be worked out. Emmanuel Dog Wash!

Be sure to get your pup washed and ready to be blessed at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Kailua. The dog wash takes place on Saturday, September 30, from 10:00 AM-2:00 PM, with all donations going to the Hawaiian Humane Society. The event coincides with the Feast of St. Francis, and Emmanuel's Blessing of the Animals on Sunday, October 1, during both services at 7:30 AM and 10:00 AM. 

They will also be selling baked goods, and tickets for their Chocolate Extravaganza will also be available for purchase. (See article under Previously Announced Event Reminders below.)  Emmanuel is located at 780 Keolu Drive in Kailua.

Acolyte Festival at Good Shepherd

Good Shepherd Episcopal Church on Maui will be holding an Acolyte Festival on Monday, October 9, 2017, from 10:00 AM-2:00 PM.  Acolytes of all ages are invited, and anyone who would like to learn about becoming an acolyte is welcome.  Workshops will include learning about the Thurible, Vestments and setting the altar. Special Reformation Events Announced

In recognition of the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation, the following events will be held at The Cathedral of St. Andrew and Christ Church Uniting:

Ecumenical Worship Service, The Cathedral of St. Andrew, Saturday, October 14, 3 :00 PM

The Rev. Dr. David Lose, Senior Pastor of Mount Olivet Lutheran Church in Minneapolis, MN, a faith community of 14,000 members, leads this service.  Lose served as the President of The Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia, where he initiated and led the effort unify LTSP with its sister seminary, The Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg, in order to create United Lutheran Seminary which launched on July 1, 2017. He taught on the faculty of Luther Seminary (St. Paul, MN) for fourteen years where he served as Academic Dean, was the founding director of the Center for Biblical Preaching, led the creative team that developed WorkingPreacher.org, and directed two Lilly Endowment-funded grants on fostering congregational vibrancy. Author of several books and accompanying resources in the popular Making Sense series he created with Augsburg Fortress, Lose has also written for numerous print and web publications including The Christian Century and Patheos.com. You can find his regular reflections on preaching and the life of faith at "...In the Meantime" ( www.davidlose.net), his personal blog with more than 7500 subscribers.

The Great Pumpkin Festival

The annual Great Pumpkin Festival is being held at Holy Nativity School on Saturday, October 21, 2017, from 10:00 AM-4:00 PM. This wonderful family event features a pumpkin patch, Keiki Fun Zone, rides and games, petting zoo, pony rides, holiday market, food trucks, fair contests and live entertainment.  Parking is free!  Holy Nativity School is located at 5286 Kalanianaole Highway in Honolulu. Taste and See: Experiencing the Goodness of God with our Five Senses

Holy Innocents Episcopal Church in Lahaina, Maui, will be hosting a special workshop on Saturday, October 28, 2017, from 9:00 AM-1:00PM. 

The event will be facilitated by Rev. Dr. Phyllis Meighen (UCC), who explores the spirituality of St. Ignatius of Loyola, to recognize and reflect on God's presence and goodness in the physical world. Our five senses are a powerful biblically based way for us to encounter God, not only as a spiritual practice, but also in the messy splendor of everyday life.

Celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the Passing of Queen Lili'uokalani

November 11, 2017, marks the 100th Anniversary of the passing of Queen Lili'uokalani. Two Native Hawaiian Senators, Brickwood Galuteria and Kai Kahele, have asked churches in Hawai'i to commemorate this historic moment in a respectful and spiritual way, by the tolling of church bells on this day at 8:30 AM, the time of her passing. More information will be forthcoming.

Eucharistic Minister/Visitor Training at Good Shepherd Offered

A Eucharistic Minister/Eucharistic Visitor training will be taking place at Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Wailuku, Maui, on Saturday, November 11, 2017.  The training will take place from 9:00 AM-12:00 PM. These are licensed ministries in the Diocese of Hawai'i and will be led by Rev. John Hau'oli Tomoso.
