The Story Behind The Song - "Pieces That Lay Broken"

I was working on several song ideas in 2023 when my wife received some devastating news about her health. Sadly, an all-too-common occurrence today.

Channeling the angst I wrote “Pieces That Lay Broken” merging a pre-existing composition with lyrics reflecting bad news and loss. I gave the idea an ethereal dream like sound woven with hard edges.

Previously I had worked on my 2022 single release titled “WARM” with a great group of top musicians and vocalists. The guitar was handled by Timothy Reid, an award-winning guitarist and excellent composer living in Osaka. Japan.

I went to Timothy first with my idea and sure enough he had some ideas of his own. The final cut had Timothy’s arrangement and improvements. I recorded the vocals (originally wanting a woman to sing) and we posted all of the tracks on our shared virtual studio at Kompoz.com.

Gilbert Norum from Mexico pulled the tracks, reintroduced the bongos from my original idea track, and put together a stunning mix/master. - E G Holmes
