Summer Doldrums, or The Calm Before the Storm

The summer of 2024 has peaked and is now sliding toward the fall. Though our days are still warm, they grow shorter each day as children soak up their last lazy moments until school begins, hearkening the return of a routine familiar to all. Families and couples finish their vacations, freshened by their journeys yet yearning to sleep in their own bed. And through it all lies our city, restful from its peaceful summer slumber and ready for the activities yet to come.

Summer is a time for peaceful reflection, for reminiscing about life’s experiences and for consideration of what lies ahead. It is a time for swimming, for sailing, and for quick naps in a hammock. It is a time to charge one’s batteries in preparation for the challenges that stand waiting on the horizon, the calm before the storm that will happen in November.

2024 is an election year. Not just any election year, mind you, but a presidential election year. And not just any presidential election year, either. The summer of 2024, that normally peaceful, sleepy time, was overtaken by an incredible series of events that were unprecedented in modern American history. We all witnessed these events as they happened in real time. The race to become the next President of the United States will be like no other.

Having said that, there are other elections that will have a more direct impact on Pleasanton, other choices the community will face this fall. The race for Mayor and both City Council positions on the ballot will be contested, as will our local representative for the BART Board and two of our school district Board members. We will also have a new State Senator thanks to redistricting. And Pleasanton voters will be asked to vote on a sales tax increase of one-half cent.

So much to consider. And yet, those decisions lie a few months down the road. In the meantime, summer continues winding its sleepy way toward Labor Day, the point in time where the energy level shifts gear. Until then, enjoy every last day of summer. You deserve it.

The Pleasanton Young Professionals Continue to Make a Difference in Our Community

Non-profits have always been the cornerstone of their communities, and we are trying our best to help them any way we can. On August 17th, some of our board members will be at the Pleasanton Farmers Market volunteering for Big Bay Ray, a non-profit that supports horse and donkey rescue and rehabilitation. These services will provide food, veterinary services, shelter, and companionship to the many neglected horses. We will help bring awareness and educate others about their mission, as well as selling merchandise that will help support their cause. Come by our booth and say hi if you see us!

We are also closing our donations for school supplies soon for the Assistance League of Amador Valley, a non-profit that serves the needs of children, teens, and seniors in the Tri-Valley. They work closely with the Alameda County Social Services Agency to supply foster students who are ready for college, backpacks and essential school supplies, as well as reading books for children to read during their visits with their biological parents. Please come by and donate for this great cause!

In the fall, we will also be volunteering with them for their Operation School Bell program, their largest philanthropic program to go shopping with school age children at the local Kohl’s for school shopping. If you’re interested in getting involved with us, please contact us soon at pleasantonyoungprofessionals@gmail.com for more details. Background checks are required.

In other news, we recently concluded a Joint Mixer in collaboration with the Dublin Chamber of Commerce at the Dublin Technology Center Workspaces. These collaborative events have always been the types of events we look forward to the most because of the reciprocity to connect with other groups within their network, reach out further from Pleasanton and create awareness, and connect with new people who probably didn’t know of our existence.
