Congratulations to New CAMA Board Member-Elect for Newfoundland and Labrador, and Board Member-Elect for Québec

During our recent election process for the 2022-2023 CAMA Board of Directors there were two positions available: one for Newfoundland and Labrador and one for Québec.

The Board of Directors is pleased to announce that we had one nomination for Newfoundland and Labrador and one nomination for Québec. Thus, by acclamation, we would like to welcome Mr. Rodney Cumby, City Manager for the City of Corner Brook, NL and Ms. Raffaelle Di Stasio, City Manager for the City of Montreal West, QC.

Rodney and Raffaelle will take on their new roles on the Board of Directors after the virtual CAMA Annual General Meeting being held on Tuesday, May 31st, 2022 at 11:30 a.m. EST. You can read their bios below.

Thursday, March 31, 2022 - Membership Renewal Deadline

Deadline for CAMA membership renewals for the April 1, 2022 to March 31, 2023 fiscal year. Invoices were emailed the second week of January 2022 and can be renewed online using your CAMA Member ID located in the top left corner of the invoice. Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement Pilot Project

In support of the City's sustainability, circular economy, GHG emissions and waste reduction objectives and targets, the City implemented a pilot project in collaboration with Lafarge Canada to use 40% RAP on a major municipal road. The City's current specifications allow up to 10% recycled material. Higher percentages have presented quality control challenges to users in the past, resulting in a sub-standard final product. The work that led to this pilot originated from a NZWC initiative to develop an accreditation system to use higher level of RAP in paving applications. The City took the lead in engaging local asphalt producers to develop draft accreditation criteria under NZWC’s guidance. Industry provided feedback that a monitored pilot project would be critical for building industry capacity and buyer confidence in using asphalt applications with a minimum of 40% RAP content. This project places the City in a leadership role through robust local stakeholder engagement, reducing the use of virgin aggregates, displacing fossil fuels, reducing waste, and applying a high RAP percentage in a public road. Based on feedback from the City’s contractor, this is the first such project in Canada on a municipal road.

Biosolids Management Program

The CRD recently commissioned a new sewage treatment system that has been in development for many years.  The primary result is that the region is now discharging clean water to the marine environment while the remaining solids are processed into dried class A biosolids.  A significant challenge for the project has been to determine a beneficial end use for the biosolids as it cannot be land applied due to local government concerns. Following much research, it was determined that the only available solution involves combustion and that any such process would have to satisfy the applicable requirements of the CCME guidelines. Through innovative partnerships with industry and First Nations, the CRD has created a program whereby the biosolids will be utilized as an alternate fuel in a nearby cement kiln, thereby displacing low grade coal and reducing overall GHG emissions. This partnership will provide a consistent supply of alternate fuel that will help the industry achieve their goals and satisfies the directive of local governments. The project also evolved to develop a partnership with a group of three local First Nations to transport the biosolids to the cement manufacturer and will also provide other services to the CRD.
