Toolkit for Effective CAOs - The Right Questions to Ask English Logo.jpg

Don't forget about CAMA's Toolkit for Effective Chief Administrative Officers: The Right Questions to Ask” which is available to members by visiting the Member’s Section (Toolkit area) of the CAMA website.

This toolkit is meant to be a resource to support our members whether they are just starting their job as a CAO (or senior administrator) or have been in the role for some time in a new community or one they’ve been in for many years. It will assist all of our members with building a team with their staff and Council. No one is born a local government administrator. Each of us comes to this role by way of a path of some kind. Being an effective CAO is not about knowing everything; it is about asking the right questions and challenging appropriately. This resource is a guide to support CAOs in their work. One of the most powerful management tools that you can have at your disposal is very basic…the question.

The Toolkit will provide sample questions for Council, sample questions for each Division and Department, and a resource for the Executive Team.

BRAVO for Customer Service Training Program

The BRAVO for Customer Service Training Program equips employees to deliver more consistent service with both external and internal customers across the City of Mississauga's departments and channels. With five steps that can be applied to any service interaction, BRAVO stands for: Be Welcoming, Receive the Need, Address the Need, Voice Actions and Next Steps, and Offer Your Appreciation.

Implemented in phases, the City’s multi-functional project team partnered with an external vendor to deliver training to the City’s Leadership Teams, People Leaders, and all employees. Additionally, a Train-The-Trainer program with representation from 13 divisions supported the roll-out of online training covering the topics of service, active listening, and empathy.

Noted by one participant as “long overdue,” the new program was applauded for BRAVO's simplicity and more than 2,000 respondents gave the training high marks with a 90% survey satisfaction score. “For the first time, the City has a model that is applicable to all of our interactions and will help us deliver better service across the organization for our municipal customers."

Implementation of the 2016 Durham Community Climate Adaptation Plan

As evidenced by Regional Council’s declaration of a climate emergency in January 2020 Durham Region recognizes that the climate is changing, and that urgent action is needed to ensure that the region remains livable, resilient, and prosperous into the future. In 2016, Durham Regional Council approved the Durham Community Climate Adaptation Plan (DCCAP), which included 18 programs designed to prepare for a climate future that will be significantly different than when much of its infrastructure was built. Durham Region has been implementing the plan in collaboration with its many cross-sectoral partners, including local municipalities, electrical utilities, conservation authorities, and provincial and federal agencies. Durham Region is not resting on the laurels of its award-winning plan, but rather is driving implementation through action and this should be recognized and celebrated.

Highlights of this implementation work include:

-Launching a subsidized backyard tree planting program.

-Launch a region-wide rural tree planting and stewardship program.

-Undertaking deep retrofits on the Region’s social housing buildings

Investing in wetland restoration.
