Dear Alison,

What a week for our beautiful city, as Lumiere 2023 transformed Durham once again with their biggest festival yet! Congratulations to Artichoke, Durham County Council, County Durham Community Foundation, the festival makers, volunteers and of course to our wonderful business community for supporting this world class event, also shining a light on the stunning venues of the Auckland Project in Bishop Auckland this year.

'Tis the season, and we've loved celebrating many of you at Award Dinners and Charity events. Autumn has also seen our busiest period in a long time, as we welcomed a record number of new members (see below) and office service clients. In addition, our action packed events programme, including new venues Delta Marriott Royal County Hotel who hosted a wicked Halloween Breakfast and The Copper Pot where the students impressed with their wonderful hospitality and culinary delights.

As the festive season fast approaches, we hope you can join us to celebrate another year of business, and be sure to check out some of our member news and events below.

Happy Networking!

Alison

There is one opportunity to bring the tapestry to the UK and save it for the nation.

The Zurbaran Trust needs to raise £1m in match funding for bid of circa £3m to a national heritage funder, allowing it to purchase 'The Burning of the Books'. We are already at £540,000 and every donation or letter of support helps, and demonstrates a national will to bring it home.

It was ordered by Henry VIII around 1535 and was thought lost for many years. Our aim is to buy it and bring it to the Faith Museum at Auckland Castle. It is a really high profile item nationally and one we believe will raise the profile of Bishop Auckland. You can read more about the tapestry here.

'One thing that would really help us is to show local businesses support our bid to bring the tapestry here, and we hope you might take just a few minutes to complete this very short survey. We would love to know what you think and how you think your business might use it to your advantage.

The Better Man Project

Durham Business Club member Dr Richard Harkness has always been passionate about helping people and believing that prevention is better than cure.

For many years in his work as a GP he would see men come in seriously struggling with their personal lives. They had all the outward trappings of success with expensive clothes, cars and homes but inwardly they were at breaking point and often they were about to either lose or already had lost their partners. “I wish I could have just told her what I really felt” was a painfully common comment made by these men.

That’s why Dr Harkness joined forces with former psychotherapist and coach Phil Airson to create the The Better Man Project. A collaborative program over 8 weeks to empower men to reconnect not only to their partners but to their kids, other like minded men and most importantly themselves.
