HOME TOUR

October 9

All "hands" on deck!

President's Message

Fellow Club Members,

Diane, Maria and I attended a very informative Leadership meeting (Institute) in Albany GA. We will be sharing what we learned with our CSP chairmen and you our members. Our State President's

projects center around hands, especially helping hands. Books for children is another major project. We are charged with getting books into the hands of children. We do this quite well with our Little Libraries.

If you have ideas for projects using our hands, please pass them on to our CSP chairmen or any DWC officer.

Speaking of hands, we need all hands on deck for the upcoming home tour. For those who saw the homes, I hope you were impressed and that you will be able to sell your home tour tickets. Those funds will help our hands continue our work in our communities.

GFWC Day of Service is Sept, 28, 2024. We will be using our hands to collect food for the CAC food pantry helping those who do not have enough food to feed their families. Please ask your friends and neighbors to help us with this collection. Bring your non-perishable food to the September General Meeting.

Looking forward to coming together for another year in celebration of service and fellowship.

DWC is in the final stages of hosting another great Home Tour. Our August 15 Preview Tour was so much fun with 3 beautiful houses and excited homeowners. The Spruill Gallery exhibit, which coincides with Home Tour, will feature the art of Kate Burke and Aineki Traverso starting September 19 through October 31.  Dunwoody Gallery, a new DWC sponsor, will feature a Showcase on Fall Entertaining during the day of the Tour. They are promoting Home Tour Ticket Sales on their website at DunwoodyGallery.com

Ticket Packets:

Please make every effort to sell your tickets and turn in your money at either the September or October General Meetings. Included in this year’s ticket packet is a brief survey for you to complete about ticket selling. Please contact Donna Fullilove or Kim Reuning if you have not received your ticket packets.

Publicity:

We are asking every member who uses Facebook and/or Instagram, to post a Home Tour image promoting online ticket sales. The schedule for posting to Facebook and/or Instagram is as follows:

·   Make 1 post between Sept 9-13 – last names Abbott thru Crawford (A-C)

·     Make 1 post between Sept 16-20 – last names D’Angelo thru Jordan (D-J)

·     Make 1 post between Sept 23-27 – last names Kammerer thru Norris (K-N)

·     Make 1 post between Sept 30-Oct 4 – last names Post thru Zochler (P-Z)

Also, check our social media networks (AHA Connection and City of Dunwoody D-News) and The Dunwoody Crier for the great publicity that Angela Niemann has created.  Our Home Tour banners will be hoisted onto the new lamp posts throughout Dunwoody mid-September.  Each house and gallery will have a garden flag for the day of the Tour.

Ella F. White Endowment Fund

Pam King pking9188@gmail.com

The Ella F. White Memorial Endowment Fund was established in 1913 to ensure that the GFWC Georgia State Office is well equipped and funded. Ella White served as the President of GFWC Georgia from 1911-1913. The groundwork for the fund was laid during her administration. She passed away while in office, and the fund was named after her as a tribute. The principal fund remains intact and only the net income can be used for the purposes of GFWC Georgia. The initial investment was $3,300, which was raised by members through the printing and sales of a special edition of the Atlanta Constitution. Any contribution amount is appreciated. Please give your check—made out to GFWC-Georgia with Ella F. White in the memo line—to Pam King so she can mail it to the state office. Thank you in advance for your support!

And, you can also contribute to the Lipscomb Society to help preserve the Mary Ann Lipscomb Cottage on the campus of the Tallulah Falls School, which serves as the state headquarters for the GFWC-Georgia. Please make your checks out to The Lipscomb Society (not GFWC or DWC) and give your check to Pam to mail. Thank you.

The students are back on campus and are enjoying many outdoor educational activities.

Members who attended Institute were asked to bring snacks for the students and they very generously donated approximately $500 worth. The snacks will be put out at both the Upper and Middle school for the students to enjoy from GFWC GA . Snacks will also be given out during baseball games and other athletic events. DWC attendees were among those who donated boxes of snacks for this project.

Women in History

Suzanne Bentz

Sainte Geneviève, Sainte Patronne of Paris

Earlier this summer, we were glued to our TV sets, cheering on Team USA at the 2024 Paris Olympics. We held our breath as Simone Biles, the most decorated gymnast in the world, secured top vault, balance beam, and floor exercise medals. We did a little victory dance as our women’s soccer team celebrated with their gold medals, and Torri Huske showed off hers for the 100-meter butterfly. (And our men’s teams did a mighty fine job, too! Team USA secured the top spot for most medals won overall.)

But none of that might have been possible if not for Saint Genevieve whose prayers, it is said, saved The City of Light from the scourge of Attila the Hun. He crossed the Rhine in 451 and marched his army into modern France intent on destroying Paris. It may have been the prayer marathon Genevieve organized among the women of Paris, but for some reason, Attila changed his mind about sacking the city and put his troops on a different path. That alone ensured Genevieve’s sainthood and today she is recognized as the Patron Saint of Paris.

Genevieve was born around 422 in Nanterre, France, to Severus and Gerontia. Some say they were peasants, others claim the family was upper class. When Genevieve was about seven, Germanus, Bishop of Auxerre, visited Nanterre on his way to Britain. The townspeople sought his blessing, and Genevieve was singled out. Germanus is said to have foretold Genevieve’s sanctity and he consecrated her on the spot to God as a virgin.

Genevieve stuck to her commitment. She never married and remained true to her religious devotion until she died at about the age of 79 to 93. “Miracles and healings began to happen around her early on.” As so often happens, some folks resented Genevieve’s rising celebrity and wished her harm. But Germanus came to her rescue and smoothed things over. When her parents died, Genevieve moved to Paris and that’s where the legends really took off, including that stand down with Attila. She also was instrumental in the construction of two major basilicas in Paris, and miracles have been attributed to Genevieve through the ages.

While members of the Dunwoody Woman’s Club have not had to deal with the likes of Attila the Hun (thank goodness) or taken to prayer marathons (at least not overtly), we have rallied around some pretty significant causes over the past 50-plus years. Our hands-on work helped to open the Stage Door Theatre, preserve the historic acreage of the Dunwoody Nature Center, establish the Spruill Center for the Arts, and launch Dunwoody’s first Fourth of July Parade … all Gold Medal accomplishments, deserving honor and admiration.
