We've been busy over winter collaborating on a range of projects and events, and there will be plenty to see, do and attend over the next few weeks!
You can read below for all the latest on what's going on.
You'll find below an update on the dashboard launch for the
Adelaide Zero Project, the first of it's kind in Australia, and a wrap up from this year's
on 8 August.
The final Dunstan Film Club for this year is
in early October with two fun movies screening on the same day in the school holidays. Bring the kids during the day to see

or grab some mates and come along to see Crazy Rich Asians that same evening!
We also welcome two new Committee Members, Mia Hanshin and Sonia Waters to our leadership group and look forward to working with them in the future.

Dr Guy Turnbull begins his
Thinker's Residency this month
Dr Guy Turnbull's Residency will explore opportunities for the development of
co-operatives across a range of industries in the State, with a focus on the care and social services sector in response to the roll-out of the National Disability Insurance Scheme.
As a part of these Residencies, we have the following public events that you can attend to learn from and engage with Dr. Guy Turnbull himself:
- The Rapid Enterprise Development (RED) Workshop. Learn how to develop a micro-enterprise through this practical one-day workshop with Dr Guy Turnbull. This workshop is designed for people living with disability or who are experiencing social or economic disadvantage. For enquiries and registration please contact Kate Jarrett at the Don Dunstan Foundation or (08) 8313 2718. Sponsorship for the attendance fee is available.
We are also thrilled to announce the return of Thinker in Residence
Allyson Hewitt
(Director of Social Innovation, MaRS Discovery District, Toronto) for her third and final Residency with Thinkers' alumni
Dr Ilse Treurnicht
(former CEO, MaRS, Toronto).
Allyson and Ilse will be returning in tandem for a joint Residency in March/April of 2019.

Join us in October for what's been lauded as the rom-com of the year, Crazy Rich Asians. The film follows a passionate New York Economics Professor, Rachel (
Constance Wu
), who has been dating Nick (
Henry Golding
) for quite some time. When Nick learns about his best friend's wedding back in Singapore, he sees this as the perfect opportunity to bring Rachel along and introduce her to his family. However, Rachel doesn't know much about Nick's family including the fact that Nick just so happens to be from one of the wealthiest families in all of Asia. Can Rachel, a middle-class Asian American win over Nick's family and friends despite their social and economic differences?

This October school holidays we are putting on a Dunstan Film Club movie for the whole family!

, Violet, Dash, and baby Jack-Jack again use their powers to rescue the people of their city.
The movie explores the Parrs' family dynamics and eventually pits them against a villain named Screenslaver. Like the original, the sequel has frequent, intense superhero action/violence, including large-scale destruction, frequent peril, weapons, and laser beams shooting out of a character's eyes. But there's also lots of humor, even in the action sequences, as well as themes of teamwork, courage, communication, and perseverance -- and how easy it is to be manipulated by the screens all around us.

Applications Now Open for the Len King Scholarship
Students seeking to commence studies in Law in 2018 are invited to apply for the Don Dunstan Foundation Len King Scholarship. The award of up to $15,000 per annum, paid for up to four years, provides funds for general living expenses.

Our Mob Emerging Artist Prize Winner
Congratulations
Tony Wilson, 2018 winner of the
Don Dunstan Foundation Our Mob Emerging Artist Prize! Tony's prize winning work tilted Uncle is an acknowled
gement to community leaders past, present and future.
The $5,000 prize money will enable Tony to
work as a full-time artist for two months to develop a solo exhibition for the Fringe Festival in March 2019.
This process will help him establish himself in the visual arts realm in SA.
In addition to his work as an artist he has been working in schools with young people for many years and more recently as artist in residence at Alberton Primary School mentoring young artists and helping them to find connection to culture and express this through art.
The 2018 Our Mob and Our Young Mob exhibition is now open until Sun 14 Oct in the Festival Theatre Gallery.

2018 Homelessness Conference
On 8 August, over 250 guests joined the Don Dunstan Foundation for our fifth annual Homelessness Conference.
There was an incredible line up of over 30 nationally and internationally acclaimed conference presenters, panel members, service providers and practitioners, policy and decision makers, innovators and academics.
Housing solutions was a strong theme for the conference, and the ever popular mini-presentations featured pets and homelessness, apps such as Street Connect, Veteran homelessness, and of course, updated progress on the Adelaide Zero Project.
We were honoured to have Professor Marah Curtis from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Sally Hines from The Big Issue as our keynotes covering welfare reform and Homes 4 Homes respectively.

Adelaide Unveils Australia's First Dashboard on Homelessness and Housing
Adelaide is now the first city in Australia that is actively tracking the number of rough sleepers in its inner city and how many of them have moved into secure housing.
For the first time, South Australians will be able to know how many people are without a home on any given night and these figures will be publicly reported every month, as part of the Adelaide Zero Project's new online Dashboard.
Don Dunstan Foundation Executive Director David Pearson says '
This latest initiative from the Adelaide Zero Project is aimed at helping to end street homelessness, by increasing understanding of the overall number of people sleeping rough and how well the homelessness and housing systems are supporting them.'

Public Lecture with Professor Henry Reynolds
This Whispering in our Hearts Revisited
Listening to the whispering in his own heart, Professor Henry Reynolds was led into the lives of remarkable and largely forgotten white humanitarians who followed their consciences and challenged the prevailing attitudes to Indigenous people.
These men and women fought for justice for Indigenous people even when doing so left them isolated and criticised by their fellow whites. The unease of these humanitarians about the morality of white settlement has not dissipated and their legacy informs current debates about reconciliation between black and white Australia.

Professor Anne Kavanagh is the inaugural Chair of
Disability and Health at the Melbourne School of
Population and Global Health at the University of
Melbourne. She is Academic Director of the Melbourne Disability Institute - an interdisciplinary Institute which brings together researchers, government and non-government organisations, and advocates to create systemic change to improve the lives of people with disability. She is Co-Director of the NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence in Disability and Health. Anne is a social epidemiologist and her research focusses on generating high quality policy-relevant evidence for change. She is a member of the Victorian Disability Advisory Council and the Independent Advisory Council of the National Disability Insurance Agency.
Her research is enriched by her own lived experience of disability as someone with a chronic condition and as a parent of a child with a disability. Anne is a proud alumni of Flinders University; she graduated with a medical degree in 1987 where she was taught by the late Associate Professor Deane Southgate.

Welcome to our new
Committee of Management Members
These past months have seen two new members join the Don Dunstan Foundation Committee of Management, Mia Handshin (image left) and Sonia Waters (image right).
A writer, lawer, and leadership consultant, Mia Handshin is passionate about environmental and social justice issues, children's rights and global inequities. Since 1996 Mia has served on a number of Boards and bodies including the University of Adelaide Governing Council, The Environmental Protection Authority, and the Foundation for Young Australians. From 2012 Mia has also been an Associate facilitator with the Leaders Institute of SA including for the renowned Governor's Leadership Foundation program.
Sonia Waters is an Aboriginal woman from Adelaide, South Australia. Sonia's career spans 26 years in the South Australian Public Sector, 16 of those were in Aboriginal health where she provided leadership in Aboriginal Health Workforce Development. Sonia is currently the Director of Aboriginal Services in AnglicareSA and prior to this she was the Director of Community Engagement in the former Social Inclusion Unit, Department of the Premier and Cabinet and had carriage of the Aboriginal Health and Wellbeing Reference. During that role, she was instrumental in establishing the Spirit Festival, South Australia's annual Aboriginal Cultural Festival. Sonia is also currently Chair of Anglicare Australia's National Reconciliation Network.
We welcome the leadership and breadth of skills and experience both Mia and Sonia will bring to the Foundation.
