Welcome to the May edition of the 2018 Dunstan News. We don't email often so that when we do, you get the full update. 

We're collaborating on a range of projects and events and you can read below for all the news on what's going on right now.

This week we welcome prominent lawyer and activist Noel Pearson to Adelaide to speak at the  Lowitja O'Donoghue Oration. This event will sell out so please book now to avoid missing out.  

You'll find below an update on the Adelaide Zero Project and Connections Week and our efforts to end street homelessness, and we encourage you to save the date for the Don Dunstan Foundation 2018 Homelessness Conference on 8 August.

In June, we welcome our next specialist Thinker in Residence, Guy Turnbull to Adelaide, then Thinker Allyson Hewitt returns in August for her third and final visit.

We've also included an update on some great reads and what else is going on around town.

Noel Pearson: The Uluru Statement from the Heart - One Year On 

Join us to hear one of Australia's most prominent Aboriginal lawyers and activists deliver this year's Lowitja O'Donogue Oration - The Uluru Statement from the Heart, One Year On.

Noel Pearson comes from the Guugu Yimidhirr community of Hope Vale on south eastern Cape York Peninsula. Mr Pearson is a lawyer, and Founder and Director of Strategy of the Cape York Partnership. Mr Pearson also co-founded the Cape York Land Council, and helped to establish Apunipima Health Council, Balkanu Cape York Development Corporation and Indigenous Enterprise Partnerships. Mr Pearson served as a member of the Expert Panel on Constitutional Recognition of Indigenous Australians and the Referendum Council.

Adelaide Zero Project - Connections Week 
14 - 17 May 2018

May has been a big month for the Adelaide Zero Project.

Phase 2 (Implementation) kicked off with Adelaide's first Connections Week, as nearly 200 volunteers connected with people sleeping rough in the inner city. Volunteers engaged with 143 people sleeping rough over three outreach sessions, gathering information that has provided real insights into their needs and circumstances.

The new data has been used to create a By-Name List, to help the sector prioritise and coordinate hou sing and other supports for people sleeping rough in the city as quickly as possible.

Connections Week highlighted the incredible collaboration and dedication from across the sector that is driving the Adelaide Zero Project, with a comradery of volunteers from the Don Dunstan Foundation, Principal Partner, Bendigo Bank, inner city homelessness services, Department for Human Services, City of Adelaide, University of Adelaide and Flinders University. The Hon Michelle Lensink, Minister for Human Services, also came to show her support during training, outreach and at the Community Briefing.

Flinders University student and Don Dunstan Foundation volunteer, Kidist Amdemariam (pictured second from left), said "Connections Week was a great experience, we really felt like we were directly helping the lives of the homeless."

Thank you to those who supported and participated in Connections Week, including Hutt St Centre and Neami National who helped to prepare volunteers and logistics as well as Mercy Foundation, Bendigo Bank, who also provided the data entry volunteers, and City of Adelaide who helped to fund this important work.

In the coming months, there will be more opportunities to get involved with the Adelaide Zero Project as we launch a charter, business alliance and dashboard to count down to Functional Zero.

SALA Festival - Opens August 2018

Now in its 20th year, The South Australian Living Artists (SALA) Festival is a state-wide festival of Visual Art,  celebrating the many talented visual artists in South Australia. 

This year the Don Dunstan Foundation is offering a $2,500 cash award for an artist whose work explores social justice themes which align with the objectives and priorities of the Foundation including homelessness; mental health; migration, including cultural and ethnic diversity; the purpose economy; economic equality; Aboriginal economic empowerment and reconciliation; human rights; or Don Dunstan. 

Entries recently closed and we are really looking forward to seeing what  our talented South Australian artists have created!

Now in it's fifth year, the Don Dunstan Foundation Homelessness Conference is a valuable opportunity to hear from international speakers, and professionals working in the sector in South Australia. Representatives from the  Adelaide Zero Project  will also present on achievements to date as they work towards ending people sleeping rough in the Adelaide CBD by 2020, and next steps.

Breakthrough Mental Health Research launches

Mental health is one of The Don Dunstan Foundation's key priorities and we'd like to congratulate Australia's only dedicated mental health research foundation, Breakthrough Mental Health on their efforts to support ground-breaking research that will help to transform the lives of those affected by mental health issues.

Breakthrough Mental Health Research Foundation has stemmed from the Flinders Foundation,  which has a 40-year history of supporting world-leading research and the health needs of its  community within the Flinders Medical Centre and Flinders University in South Australia.
