Community Connections - July 2024

Remarks from the Sybil Smith Family Village Director

"For 25 years, the Sybil Smith Family Village has transformed the lives of thousands of women and children. The success of the Village would not be possible without the incredible support of the community. Whether through financial support, teaching life skills classes or offering prayers, our community has been the driving force behind the long-term success of our residents. I am so proud of these strong women and sweet families for deciding to invest in themselves and to change the trajectory of their future. I will continue to love and encourage our residents so that they can become the best versions of themselves." ---Sarah Laurio, Director of the Sybil Smith Family Village

Impact100 Mobile Renovations Underway!

Impact100 Mobile has made new beginnings possible for local homeless women and children. In March, Sybil Smith Family Village was selected as Impact100 Mobile’s 2024 grant recipient. The generous $117,500 grant is funding the renovation of the program’s 18 apartments, which have provided a safe haven for 2,603 individuals since opening in 1999. Units are being furnished with new flooring, paint, appliances and furniture that will benefit hundreds of families for many years to come.

"Impact100 Mobile was created to award transformational grants in our community. When presented with the story of how Sybil Smith, and other programs offered by Dumas Wesley, transformed the lives of two individuals, our members knew this was a place our grant could make a huge impact on lives of many," said, Rena Davis, Impact100 Mobile, President. "It is inspiring to see how our grant will pave the way for more families to have access to renewed spaces and opportunities for a better future. Thank you for your dedication to making a difference in the lives of others."

Thank You for Loving Me Back to Life!

“In 2012, I was a resident of the Sybil Smith Family Village. The most important lesson I learned while at the Village was that I was worthy of a good life. The program allowed me the time to learn how to move forward and believe in myself again. I was able to work on my trauma and my sobriety. They lifted me up and taught me how to stand on my own two feet. To be honest, I could have stayed there forever! My life today would not be the same without my journey at Sybil Smith Family Village. I was loved unconditionally, and given the chance to grow and change my life. Twelve years later, I still get emotional thinking about how far I've come. I am a woman of virtue. I work as a certified home health worker and in December, I will be 12 years sober! Sybil Smith Family Village is truly a blessing. Thank you for loving me back to life!" ----Regina Daniels, Sybil Smith Family Village graduate

The Village enjoys a remarkable success rate of 85-90% among residents who exited the program successfully and transitioned into permanent housing.  Click here to learn more about Dumas Wesley Community Center's transitional housing program, the Sybil Smith Family Village

A New Beginning!

“My life before Sybil Smith Family Village, was very unstable. I was a mother of a newborn, and in an unhealthy, abusive relationship. We were living in a camper that had no running water and were relying on a generator for electricity. I had no idea where my life was headed. All I knew was that this was not the environment I wanted my son to grow up in.

A local shelter referred me to Sybil Smith Family Village. I remember what it felt like the first night in our own apartment. We were safe, and it was the start of our new beginning. I continue to be grateful for this chance to rebuild our lives. I appreciate everything the Village offers - especially the life skills classes. I am regaining my self-confidence and learning how to become independent. I am working full time, I have raised my credit score and even purchased a car! The support from the community has also made a difference in our lives. When my car broke down, a generous donor helped pay for my repairs. This act of kindness touched my heart. I’ll be forever grateful.

I feel empowered for the first time in my life! I have become a better mother and most importantly, we are both happy! I feel confident that when I graduate, I'll be a success story. This program continues to change my life!" ---Crystal, Sybil Smith Family Village resident

Voices from the Village

It Takes a Village! Thank you!

"I am deeply honored to receive this award on behalf of the Sybil Smith Family Village. Volunteering at the Village has personally been so fulfilling because it reminds me of my previous career as a social worker. I love witnessing their joy when they achieve their dreams."

---Maria Colon, Community Partner, Gulf States Immigration Services

Colon offers her services for Spanish speaking residents at Sybil Smith Family Village. Colon works alongside the staff to provide translation services, immigration assistance and referrals to community resources.

"I have always advocated for people needing help no matter their circumstances by using my tithe money or making things they can use. The need for transitional housing programs is urgent. I am so thankful the Village is there to help. They do a wonderful job caring for the emotional and physical needs of their residents so that they can have a bright and successful future. This is the reason I will always support Sybil Smith with everything I have."
