Duck Derby is this weekend!
It's finally here! Join the community for the third annual Duck Derby, a fun, family-friendly event this Saturday, May 11. The Duck Derby is hosted by Vision of Wallkill and Wallkill High School’s Senior Celebration Committee. Yellow rubber ducks will be launched into the Wallkill River, each contending to cross the finish line at Popp Park to claim the coveted “Fastest Duck” award and cash prize.
The Duck Derby will take place at Popp Park (3081 Route 208, Wallkill, NY 12589), starting at noon. There are plenty of activities before the race: a bounce house, DJ and music, contests and games with ‘Ducky’ twists. The Wallkill Woman’s Club will be selling flowers just in time for Mother’s Day. Vendors will be offering BBQ and hot dogs for purchase, making it an easy and affordable lunch for the family. At 1 p.m., enjoy the Birds of Prey presentation sponsored by the Wallkill Public Library (see below for more info).
If you haven’t adopted your duck before getting to Popp Park for the derby, you can do so between 12 and 2:30 p.m. Ticket sales end at 2:30 p.m. on derby day. Click here for the schedule of events.
The Duck Derby main event kicks off at 3 p.m. Boaters will paddle up the Wallkill River to launch the rubber ducks and you can watch them float downstream towards Popp Park. Winners will be announced once all the rubber ducks have been retrieved from the river.
For more information about the Duck Derby, or for tickets, call/text: VOW at 845-325-2329 or Sr. Celebration at 845-728-0606.
Please note: this is a rain or shine event. The derby race may be cancelled if the river conditions are deemed dangerous for our boaters, kayakers, volunteers and spectators.

Saturday Morning Book Club's April pick
|
The Saturday Morning Book Club will have their next meeting at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, June 29. They'll be discussing Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt. The group will be meeting in the reading room.
Remarkably Bright Creatures, an exploration of friendship, reckoning, and hope, tracing a widow's unlikely connection with a giant Pacific octopus.
After Tova Sullivan's husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she's been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago.
Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn't dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors--until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.
Ever the detective, Marcellus deduces what happened the night Tova's son disappeared. And now Marcellus must use every trick his old invertebrate body can muster to unearth the truth for her before it's too late.
Shelby Van Pelt's debut novel is a gentle reminder that sometimes taking a hard look at the past can help uncover a future that once felt impossible. – Goodreads

Adult Fiction Book Club's June selection
On Wednesday, June 19, at 6:30 p.m., the adult fiction book club will meet in our reading room to discuss the classic World War I novel, A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway.
A Farewell to Arms is the unforgettable story of an American ambulance driver on the Italian front and his passion for a beautiful English nurse. Set against the looming horrors of the battlefield - the weary, demoralized men marching in the rain during the German attack on Caporetto; the profound struggle between loyalty and desertion—this gripping, semi-autobiographical work captures the harsh realities of war and the pain of lovers caught in its inexorable sweep. Ernest Hemingway famously said that he rewrote his ending to A Farewell to Arms thirty-nine times to get the words right. – Goodreads
