Week 7: Dry Hollow
| |
|
Dry Hollow encompasses a total of 1,272 acres of conserved land and lies within Huntingdon and Centre Counties with the majority of it in Warriors Mark Township. Portions of the property provide important habitat for declining young forest species. The geology is similar to that of the Scotia Barrens and lies between two Important Bird Areas along the Bald Eagle and Tussey Mountain ridgelines.
Vernal pools scattered throughout the property provide breeding habitat for a variety of species. These pools collect and hold water in spring, but are usually dry by mid-summer. Our outings will allow you to see the contrast that exists in the management of each pool area, the variety of habitat, and the different communities of species that these pools support. In addition, you’ll be able to take a short, self-guided walk to the unique sand pit area near the main entrance after the guided portion of each outing.
Since the acquisition of Dry Hollow was so recent, trail work and signage in the area is a work in progress. Many trails in the center of the property are clear and easy to navigate in early spring, but can be overgrown by mid-summer and are not clearly marked. We recommend you download all maps prior to visiting the area since cell phone service is unreachable within Dry Hollow. The gravel road that begins at the entrance is generally clear and provides a serene path through the heart of the property.
This is a unique opportunity to explore and learn about a new recreation spot in our area. We are thrilled to be able to share it with you. See you on the trails!

Guided Outings at Dry Hollow
Sunday, July 14 at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.; Thursday, July 18 at 6 p.m.
Home to barrens habitat and unique features including a massive sand pit, vernal pools, and remnants of iron mining, Dry Hollow is now managed by Rothrock State Forest for public use after being conserved through a partnership between ClearWater Conservancy and PA DCNR. While here, walk or bike along a mix of wide gravel roads and foot paths through young forest and diverse terrain, throughout the 1,271-acre property.
Outings will be led by our Centred Outdoors guides with assistance and information provided by Jim Julian, Ecological Program Specialist for DCNR’s Bureau of Forestry who works in the Resource Inventory and Monitoring Section. Jim helped lead the effort to map and inventory the vernal pools that occur throughout Dry Hollow and he has worked in vernal pool ecosystems for over twenty years. On Thursday's outing, we will also be joined by Suzy Yetter, staff Ecologist for ClearWater Conservancy. Suzy provides technical expertise in developing and implementing conservation strategies through ClearWater’s land and water resources programs and works with landowners, volunteers, local organizations, and other partners to protect and restore healthy ecosystems.
After the guided outings near the Dry Hollow camp, you will have the option to take a short, self-guided walk to the sand pit area near the main entrance. Our guides and signage will direct you.
