JHS STAR Student and Teacher Named

Jefferson High School senior David Heard has been named the school’s 2022 STAR Student. Heard selected Amberly Roberts, a geometry and advanced algebra teacher at JHS, as his STAR Teacher.

“She’s made a significant and positive impact on my high school career,” said Heard. “Mrs. Roberts may have taught me in only one class, but she has helped me tremendously ever since I took it. She has guided, supported and encouraged me. I truly believe I would not be the same person I am today without her!” Read More ...

JHS Earns Top Honors as AP Honor School

Jefferson High School has been named a 2023 Advanced Placement Honor School by State School Superintendent Richard Woods. Honor Schools are named based on the results of the 2022 AP courses and exams. JHS achieved AP STEM School and AP STEM Achievement School status. Over 50% of Jefferson High School students received a 3 or higher on all AP STEM exams.

“I sincerely congratulate each of this year’s AP Honor Schools on their achievement,” says Woods. “Additionally, I thank each teacher, student and school- and district-level administrator for their diligent work creating strong AP opportunities in their schools.”

AP courses are one of several ways students can access college-level learning at the high school level. Students who receive a 3, 4 or 5 on an AP exam may receive college credit. AP exams are administered by the College Board, which also administers the SAT.

The students performed an hour-long program for music educators across the state. This was a huge honor as groups are selected to perform via a blind audition process! Our wind ensemble was one of only two high school bands selected to perform.

JCS Hosts County-Wide Special Olympics Event

The Jefferson City School System hosted a Special Olympics event earlier this month at the Jefferson Parks and Recreation Department gymnasium for elementary students from across the county. At the Jackson County Winter Games – Elementary Basketball, students competed in both individual and team basketball skills. The awards ceremony celebrated the young athletes with ribbons and individual awards.

Participating elementary schools included classes from Gum Springs Elementary, Jefferson Academy, Jefferson Elementary, Maysville Elementary and South Jackson Elementary.

The event was coordinated by Suzanne Slaughter from Jefferson Elementary School and Jenna Banks of East Jackson Comprehensive High School. Student-athletes from JCS served as volunteers.

It was a great and “United Jackson” day for the students, their families, their teachers and their schools!

Attendance-Focused Original Artwork Showcased

Attendance matters at JCS! This has been an ongoing focus for our school system. Earlier this month, our schools found a unique way to highlight and focus on the importance of being in school through student-created art displayed at schools and the monthly BOE meeting.

Art teachers took the opportunity to get their students engaged in the topic by leading discussions about what attendance is, what it means as a student and why it takes all of us to help students feel they belong.

The results were magnificent! The types of art displayed included digital art, original drawings with embellishments and a mural created with student-made stamps. "You Belong Here" was the clear message delivered through these original works.

Counselors' Corner

School Counselors Are an Essential Source of Support for All Students

By Holly McShane, School Counseling Coordinator

Two weeks ago, we celebrated National School Counseling Week throughout JCS. This week is observed each February and was developed to highlight the significant impact school counselors have in the K-12 student experience.

Programs and services that counselors deliver to all students have drastically changed over the past couple of decades. The traditional title of "guidance counselor" was replaced with "school counselor" as recently as 2021. This change demonstrates the shift from serving just a few students in crisis to delivering a full-fledged, comprehensive program that uses data to address the needs of all students. Three areas specifically addressed within our counseling program are academic, social/emotional and career planning.

Winter Sports Highlight: Bass Fishing

Fishing, a sport?! The answer is definitive: Yes! The amount of perseverance, hard work and time that goes into becoming a successful angler is not for the faint of heart. It’s a sport that requires in-depth knowledge and an abundance of patience and perseverance.

Although the sport of bass fishing has been around for a very long time, this is only the second year that it has been recognized at JCS as GHSA team sport. It’s been a great two years for Jefferson! Read more ...

CTAE Students of the Month

February is CTAE Month for our middle and high school students! The goal has been to raise awareness for the part CTAE plays in getting students ready for college and careers. CTAE stands for Career Technical and Agricultural Education. High school students can combine their core academic classes with technical and occupational skills to help them prepare for the next step after graduation. JHS recognized several CTAE students for February! Click the image or here to read about these students and their CTAE experience at JHS.

Let Children Get Bored Again!

Boredom teaches us that life isn’t a “parade of amusements.” More importantly, it generates creativity and autonomy. The ability to handle boredom is correlated with the ability to focus and to self-regulate. It’s especially important that kids get bored — and be allowed to stay bored — when they’re young. Three Rules for Homework

This is a clear three-step process your children can internalize at any age!

  1. "Eat the frog." That's shorthand for "do the hardest thing first."
  2. Put away the phone. Homework time can't be totally tech-free (computers!), but it can be free of text messages.
  3. As soon as assignments are finished, load up the backpack for tomorrow and place it by the door.

CDC Reports Spike in Sadness for Teen Girls

When children are sad or depressed, it can keep them from developing self-confidence and a sense of self. New data shows three out of five high school girls in the U.S. report feeling persistently sad or hopeless for at least two weeks during the past year, according to the CDC’s Youth Risk Behavior report released last week. That is double the rate for boys, as well as a 60 percent increase over the past 10 years. Read more ...

Are You Giving Fever-Reducing Medications Properly?

We are in that time of year when children usually get sick due to viral exposure. One of the first signs of illness is a warmer-than-normal forehead or fever. However, a new national poll released last week suggests many parents are not properly responding to their child’s high temperatures. Read more ...
