Dear Friends, Welcome to the Holistic Child Health Newsletter. The goal of my holistic pediatric practice, and of this newsletter, is to inform and support parents to become more empowered as the primary health care providers for their children. Extending far beyond Western medicine's conventional treatments, holistic medicine and mindful parenting allow us to boost children's natural immunity, support their optimum health and wellness, safely heal any illnesses, and prevent disease-without dangerous side effects. Holistic medicine provides us with the tools to nurture the physical, emotional, social and spiritual health of your children. Over the coming months and years, I intend to use this newsletter to address some of your concerns as parents, share information that you might want to add to your knowledge base, and inform you of important issues and current events that are happening in the news, and in your area.

Rubella Has Officially Been Eradicated From The Americas
Dr Palevsky's Comments:
Be weary of the myths propagated in this article. A virus cannot be eradicated. Simply because we don't see a viral illness formerly classified as rubella, doesn't mean the rubella virus isn't still around in nature, or hasn't mutated into a different
virus that is expressed with a different set of symptoms.
Viruses are inert. Before viruses become viruses, they start out as mere pieces of DNA or RNA genetic material. The rubella virus is an RNA virus. Viruses cannot replicate themselves, and must use the genetic instructions of a host cell in order for them to become viruses. As such, the genetic materials of viruses are embedded into the host genetic material of humans, animals, bacteria and plants. Viral replication occurs through the activation of their genetic material within the host cells of humans, animals, bacteria and plants. This activation is usually influenced by the epigenetic forces in the environment. (http://www.whatisepigenetics.com/fundamentals/).
Vaccines cannot make the DNA or RNA materials that form the structure of viruses simply disappear from the face of the earth. If anything, the pressures put on the structure of the DNA or RNA genetic material, due to the effects of vaccines, will simply force the virus to mutate into something else, as a way to survive the threat of the antibody attack on the genetic material of the viruses.
In July 2002, the Institute of Medicine published a report, Considerations for Viral Disease Eradication: Lessons Learned & Future Strategies. On page 8, they reported the following, "We do not know how viruses will evolve in the future; if and how current vaccines would be able to protect us from disease caused by newly evolved viral variants; and if and how our immune system may change as the selective pressures previously imposed by eradicated viruses are lifted or altered.

We do not know how viruses will evolve in the future, in general, and due to the effects of vaccines.
Never, do the genetic materials of any virus, including the rubella virus, simply vanish from the face of the earth. Not even due to vaccines.

There are several bills right now seeking to increase the number of mandatory shots required to go to school in New York. The first is a bill that would require meningitis vaccines for all sixth graders and eleventh graders in the state, Assembly Bill A791A introduced by Aileen Gunther and S4324 introduced by Kemp Hannon. We need to stop this bill. This bill serves utterly no public health goal because it would result in more students in New York getting killed or injured from the vaccine than from the strains of meningitis which the vaccine claims to prevent. The last time the legislature tried to make meningococcal shots mandatory in New York was 2011. In 2011 there were 7 cases of meningitis in the age groups covered by the proposed law. The vaccine does not protect against the B strain of meningitis that makes up about 30% of infections. And the vaccine manufacturer claims the vaccine is 85% effective. Do the math, 7 x .3 x .85 = 4 cases prevented in the best-case scenario. According to the package insert about 1% of vaccine recipients in the affected age group suffer "serious adverse" reactions to the shot. With an estimated 300,000 shots per year required by the proposed law that yields an estimate 3,000 serious adverse reactions annually to prevent a potential 4 cases of meningitis. Each shot cost approximately $115 combined with $50 administration fee. the cost would be $165 x 300,000 = $49,500,00. Nearly $50 million and 3,000 serious adverse reactions to prevent 4 cases of meningitis. This is just stupid public health policy.

Assemblymember Aileen Gunther and Senator Kemp Hannon's offices and politely explain why this is a really bad idea for both public health and the taxpayers' finances and ask them to scrap the bill. And remind them that any parent who wants to get this shot for their child is free to do so.

H.R.2232 - Vaccinate All Children Act of 2015
Dr. Palevsky's Comments:
On paper, this bill seems to do the following -
1) Potentially overrides state philosophical and religious exemptions, essentially removing them, while tying federal grants to the States enacting the mandates.
2) Allow only for medical exemptions.
3) Leave the validity of the
medical exemptions up to the discretion of the individual in charge of the health program at the student's school. Not clear if this is a nurse, physician, physician assistant, nurse practitioner, or someone else.
4) Require all students in school to be fully vaccinated according to the recommendations of the ACIP.

Dr. Palevsky is a board certified pediatrician who utilizes a holistic approach in his work with children and families. Dr. Palevsky received his medical degree from the NYU School of Medicine in 1987, completed a 3-year pediatric residency at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, and enrolled in a 1-year fellowship training program in the out-patient department at Bellevue Hospital/NYU School of Medicine. Since 1991, his clinical experience has included working in pediatric emergency medicine at Our Lady of Mercy Hospital in the Bronx, NY, serving as the Chief of the Pediatric Acute Care Unit at Lenox Hill Hospital in NYC, and working in in-patient and out-patient pediatric medicine, neonatal intensive care medicine, and newborn and delivery room medicine. Dr. Palevsky has also worked in a conventional, holistic and integrative pediatric practice at the NYC Beth Israel Center for Health & Healing- an integrative and complementary care medical facility. Currently, he runs his own holistic pediatric practice in Northport, NY and Manhattan. Dr. Palevsky teaches holistic integrative pediatric & adolescent medicine to parents, and medical and allied health professionals, both nationally & internationally.
