DPHS Community Member,

With only six weeks now remaining in the 2023-2024 school year, we have a number of special events upcoming rather quickly—four of them this week alone. We begin on Monday with the StuCo led Faculty & Staff Appreciation Spirit Week. This is an opportunity before the school year ends to show appreciation to our amazing DP educators who began organizing for 2023-2024 back on August 2. Each day during this spirit week carries its own theme beginning with Monday's "High Five a Teacher." I hope all of our Panthers will get involved throughout the week reaching out to a teacher or staff member that in their view, has gone the extra mile this year.

We also have a number of our very gifted Panthers from both Theater and Vocal performing on different days this week. In case you missed last week's report from the US Department of Labor, inflation is remaining stubbornly high and is still rising for many goods and services we all need to purchase. I mention this in that if you would like an evening out to enjoy some quality entertainment at a real value, please consider our last vocal performance of the year on Tuesday and one of the Xanadu performances once the musical comedy opens on Thursday. (Tickets for either may be found here.) Kindly remember that once the school year is over, these opportunities, including our spring sports will disappear, so please try to take in one of these spectacular events this week!
Dr. Phillips Air Force JROTC cadets hosted 8 schools from all over Florida to conduct the Dr. Phillips JROTC PT Competition. Eight high school programs and over 150 students competed all day long to see the Celebration AFJROTC Program take the 1st place trophy home to their school. This is the 3rd year that our cadets hosted this Great Physical Training Competition, which is known as one of the best in the state.

Pictured at the very top is our AFJROTC team that competed in the events and in action in the nearby pictures!
On Thursday, our Lady Panthers flag football team (10-2) became DISTRICT CHAMPS with a win over Windermere!
Finally, thank you very much to those DP family members that invested their time to complete our 2024 Family Survey which closed on Friday. Once we receive the overall survey results, we will use those findings in preparing our 2024-2025 school improvement plan. After the new school year begins, we will then share our progress vs. the recommendations made in the Family Survey during our monthly School Advisory Council (SAC) meetings. The help with this year's survey was sincerely appreciated.

I hope you enjoy reading about some of our Panthers' latest achievements and other news. Have a great Faculty & Staff Appreciation Spirit Week and be sure to book your tickets for We will rise and Xanadu today!

2024 Florida Vocal Association State Solo and Ensemble
April 4th, 2024

We are very proud of our 16 singers that participated at our State Solo and Ensemble Music Performance Assessment displaying their growth as musicians both individually and as a small group. In addition to performing, these students learned from professionals and each other as they participated in clinics following their performances.
  • This is the highest solo and small group vocal assessment for our state organization.
  • Participating students qualified by earning the highest rating at our District assessment in February.
Our Chorus students who performed at the State Solo and Ensemble Music Performance Assessment.
We’d like to thank our collaborative musicians, chaperones, and voice teachers that help these students achieve their best!

● Three events earned a Superior with Distinction!
Superior (1) is typically the highest possible rating. However, at the state level an additional category, Superior with Distinction, is added as a rare recognition.

Students that receive this distinction are awarded with a medal and an invitation to perform for other assessment participants on the Honors Recital at the end of their block as an example of performance excellence in our state.

■ Special Category Large Ensemble: Pantera Treble Ensemble
Coral G. (soloist), Bia A. (soloist), Kathleen B., E. Byrd, Angelina F., Christiana J., Isa L., Nix L., Alejendra R.
■ Musical Theatre Vocal Solo: Alejandra R.
■ Vocal Solo: Christiana J.

* This is the third consecutive year that students from DPHS have earned this rating but the first time in recent history that they have received more than one.

Mrs. Patel's ninth grade ELA students offer feedback about the FAST Writing test:
"After a three year break, the FAST was a little bit more difficult, however, I felt well prepared."
-Madeline Viscosi, 9th

"I appreciated the transition to more flexibility in incorporating our own voice into FAST style essays as compared to middle school formulaic lessons."
-Joshua Katz, 9th

"It was helpful to write down the steps I had to take to write a successful essay. Using personal anecdotes enhanced the rigor and tone of my writing."
-Kira Humphrey, 9th
Panther freshmen Joshua Katz, Kira Humphrey, and Madeline Viscosi
Mathew Zheng adds, "We color coded our practice essays to improve them and see our strengths and weaknesses."
Madeline Viscosi, Riyan Maali, Edyn Balsanek, Layla Doyle, Noah Cheung, and Joshua Katz
Students in the ninth grade English Language Arts classes work on a hands-on activity to prepare for the FAST Reading Assessment's new format: adaptive testing. This year, students have to lock in their answers for each passage before moving on to the next one.

Mrs. Patel adds that "the students have grown in their comprehension and analysis skills throughout the year. With only a few weeks left, we are shifting our attention to test-taking skills, so they are prepared to systematically break down questions and look for distractions and helpful hints in answering questions correctly".

College and Career
Seniors!

The FAFSA rollout this year has changed from years past and has shown some complications. The Department of Education along with the colleges and universities you have applied to are aware of these issues and are working to resolve them as quickly as possible.

Right now, the MOST important part of this process you can do is complete the FAFSA. Submitting the FAFSA form will allow colleges to eventually have access to your family income information to provide you with the Financial Aid information you so importantly need. Please remember this very important part, without completing the FAFSA, you will not receive a financial aid award from your college or university.

What you will need for your FAFSA application:
● Your Security Number
● Completed FSA ID: (Click here to complete)

What your Parent will Need:
● Their 2022 Completed Taxes (1040 Tax Return Form)
● Their Social security number
● Completed FSA ID: (Click here to complete)

I understand this form can pose many questions. Please use these resources below to receive assistance in completing the FAFSA Form:
● EVERY Walk-In Tuesday: You can meet with me or Ms. Maclean in the Media Center
In-Person and Virtual Valencia FAFSA Help Sessions: Recommended for students who plan on attending Valencia after graduation
● After School in-person opportunities that will be shared via canvas and Instagram @DPHS_CCS

Please NoteWe do not have access to your FAFSA form or any personal or financial information you or your family provide on the FAFSA form. Our role is to 1) Inform you of the importance of every student completing a FAFSA and 2) Support you and your family with information and resources to help you have a completed and successfully processed FAFSA.
*** FAFSA Completion Information + Tips! ***

1. ALL Seniors are encouraged to complete the FAFSA as soon as possible. Nearly all colleges, whether it is trade/technical or 2- and 4- year school, will REQUIRE students to complete a FAFSA regardless of financial need.

2. Your FAFSA will be processed in order of timestamp when you submit it, so please complete it ASAP!

3. Do everything you can to complete an error free FAFSA as corrections are not able to be made at this time. Errors WILL delay your FAFSA processing and a college’s ability to offer you a complete financial aid package.

- ISIR’s are “Institutional Student Information Records.” This is the information a college receives from the Department of Education about your FAFSA so the college’s financial aid office can prepare a financial aid offer package to you.

The colleges you have been accepted to CANNOT offer you a complete financial aid offer package until they receive your ISIR from the Department of Education after your FAFSA is processed successfully. If you have questions about financial aid or the implications of your FAFSA the best resource is the Financial Aid office at the college you are going to.

Need to complete your FAFSA? > visit www.studentaid.gov Help and support resources can be found on the FAFSA YouTube channel and FAFSA Help Page.

Completed your FAFSA? > It’s time to login to your FAFSA and do a status check.

- If your FAFSA says “Successfully Processed” there is NOTHING else you need to do at this time except learn about your FAFSA Submissions Summary and your SAI (more information below on that) You can relax and wait for your financial aid offer from your colleges. 😊

  • Financial Aid offers are usually available in your student account portal where you accessed your admissions decision
  • Some colleges will also mail you a paper copy.

- If your FAFSA needs corrections it will look like this…
- Identify the correction(s) that is needed, but please note, you are NOT able to make corrections at this time. “Mid April” is the anticipated timeframe the Department of Education expects that students will have the ability to make corrections or submit updates.
I completed my FAFSA and have a “Successfully Processed” message, now what?

1. Locate and Read your FAFSA Submission Summary

The FAFSA Submission Summary is a paper or electronic document from the U.S. Department of Education’s office of Federal Student Aid that lists answers to the questions on your FAFSA and gives you basic estimates about your eligibility for federal student aid. It is not a financial aid offer. A financial aid offer will come from each college you have been accepted to AFER they receive and evaluate your ISIR from the Department of Education.

If the FAFSA form is complete and processed successfully, a Student Aid Index (SAI) will be included on your FAFSA Submission Summary. (See below for more information on SAI)

If you provided a valid email on your FAFSA, you will receive an email with instructions on how to access an online copy of your FAFSA Submission Summary.

2. Understand your SAI (Student Aid Index) and what it means for you?

Understanding your SAI is important! The SAI, or Student Aid Index, is the number calculated, with information from the FAFSA, to determine a student's eligibility for college financial aid. It is NOT a dollar amount of federal financial aid you will receive or the amount of money your family is expected to pay for college. It is determined using a specific formula that considers things like a family's taxed and untaxed income, retirement and pensions, and assets/benefits like Social Security or unemployment payments and it can change if you make corrections and updates to your FAFSA.

Your college or career school will determine your financial need by subtracting your SAI from the cost of attendance.

CIS junior Avery Kaak reflects on his experience hosting a student from our sister school in Denmark, and the impact it has had on both his and his family’s life:

Last year, I hosted a student from Denmark for a week in March. While Jonas, my host student, was here we went on many fun adventures to Walmart, Taco Bell, Chick-fil-A (his personal favorite), and other staples of Orlando. After he left, we remained in contact through the social media apps Snapchat and Instagram. We currently have an impressive 254-day Snapstreak. Also, his mother and my mother became friends and started messaging one another.

In late February, his family reached out to ours and asked if we could meet up during their vacation to Florida. Of course, we jumped on this chance to see him again. Our families spent the day eating brunch and playing mini golf. It was a delightful day full of stories about his stay with us. The time together also allowed our parents to get to know one another better. I’m incredibly thankful to the CIS magnet for making available this great opportunity to forge a lifelong friendship around the globe for not only myself but also for my family.
