Dr. Melissa Bedford Announces SPS Board Resignation

Director Melissa Bedford has announced her resignation from the Spokane Public Schools Board of Directors, effective August 14, 2024. Dr. Bedford will be relocating from the area to pursue new opportunities with her family.

We are grateful for the time and energy Dr. Bedford spent serving SPS students, staff and families.

"Serving as a school board member has been an immense honor and a deeply rewarding experience," she wrote in a letter to fellow board members. "One of the reasons I ran to serve was to bring an educator’s voice to the table and I hope the community feels I achieved that goal during my time on the board."

The board has 90 days from Director Bedford’s resignation date to appoint a replacement director. Per state law, the appointed director will be a part of the SPS Board of Directors until Nov. 2025. If the appointed SPS Board Director wishes to remain on the SPS Board of Directors, they must run during the Nov. 2025 primary and general election to fulfill the remainder of Dr. Bedford's original term, which expires Nov. 2027.

We will share information about the application and interview process in the coming days. Board members must be adult residents of the district and registered voters.
