ASTAR! in Western Maryland, in collaboration with local nonprofits, will be volunteering with Glories Happy Hats to make hats for children who are terminally ill, and blankets for cancer survivors and wounded warriors. This open event will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Bernard Brown Center, 928 N. East Street in Frederick.

Latin American Youth Center (LAYC) invites community members to celebrate the life of Dr. King at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service Conference at Buck Lodge Middle School in Adelphi from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Attendees will see presentations from LAYC's after-school programs and will also take part in community service workshops. New Americans Initiative of Maryland will host a financial education fair in partnership with Capital One, Lafayette Federal Credit Union, and Latino Economic Development Center (LEDC). Participants will attend workshops and one-on-one consultations on topics, including taxes and home-buying. The fair will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the CASA Rockville Welcome Center, 14645 Rothgeb Drive, Rockville, MD 20850. The Volunteer Center Serving Howard County is hosting a county-wide Day of Service. A number of organizations will have on-site volunteer opportunities for individuals and families from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the Howard County Government Office Building in Columbia. Montgomery County Volunteer Center and partner agencies are hosting several family-friendly service activities at sites throughout the county, including North Bethesda, Silver Spring, and Seneca Creek. The largest site, the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Conference Center, will also host a volunteer fair where participants can learn about the year-round volunteer needs of local nonprofits and government agencies. On January 16, Maryland Conservation Corps will host a family-friendly cleanup of the popular Buzzards Rock attraction in Patapsco Valley State Park. Volunteers will pick up trash and remove graffiti. Volunteers should bring work gloves, sturdy shoes, a water bottle, and wear warm clothes. Tools will be provided. The cleanup will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Please contact Tyler Walker at tyler.walker@maryland.gov to sign up to attend, or in case of cancellation due to inclement weather.
