Downtown Terre Haute
Have you seen the beautiful pink ribbons lighting up the courthouse dome? Susan G. Komen's  Wabash Valley office coordinated that to commemorate October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. We are also hopeful you will join us for the 20th annual Race for the Cure this Saturday, October 8. We are at a new location this year: The Meadows Shopping Center. Those running or walking the 5K will loop around 26th Street/Mariposa and then head east on Ohio to Fruitridge and back to The Meadows.

New this year is a Kids Dash for young runners aged 4-10. They'll take one lap around the parking lot, and it's just $5. Adult registrations for the 5K or 1-mile walk are $20. Students are just $10. If you're a competitive runner, it's $5 for the chip timer.

I have to say that my favorite part of Race for the Cure is the Survivor Parade. Survivors line up by groups based on how many years they've survived and walk in together during the opening ceremonies. It's such a strong display of hope and comfort. The other great thing is that 75% of the funds raised stays local to provide grants to organizations serving the Wabash Valley. The other 25% goes to the Komen Research Fund, whose goal is to find the cure for breast cancer. Did you know 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime? That's a lot of women. We need to get them diagnosed and make them well.

Here's a quick highlight of the schedule:
7:00 Team Village and registration open
8:10 Kids Dash
8:30 Opening ceremonies with Survivors Parade
9:05 5K race
9:20 5K walk
9:35 1-mile walk

There's still time to register! You can register in person at the Komen office in the lower level of The Meadows from 11-1 or 4-6 this week. You can also register online at  komencentralindiana.org/wvrace. You can even register Saturday morning at the race site, if you like.
