Buddhism in the Park
-by Mark Fry, Board Secretary and sangha member
Last month, June 29, on a lovely warm Saturday, more than 15 local Buddhist groups gathered at Colonel Summers Park in Southeast Portland to share the many different expressions and traditions of the Buddha. Dorje Ling was there with a booth put together by Dallen, Mat, and others from our sangha.
| |
|
The event began with an opening ceremony and recitation of the Vajrasattva mantra while participants walked the perimeter of the park (establishing a boundary of Intention), led by Prajwal Ratna Vajracharya from Dance Mandal. Then each group presented songs or prayers or mantras from their respective traditions, as we stood together in one giant circle. Our sangha chanted the 7 Line Prayer to Guru Rinpoche. From then on, people visited the many tents and just got acquainted, or re-acquainted, with the diverse groups and leaders in our greater Buddhist community.
Dorje Ling was a favorite stopping point because of our cold sun tea and colorful expression of Buddhadharma. Thanks to all organizers and participants! It was a meaningful way to spend a quiet day in the park with other Buddhists, all of us sharing the intention to work for the welfare of all beings.

Dorje Ling is asking for volunteers that have experience in any area related to media and outreach including (but not limited to):
Website design/maintenance
Communication (social media content, newsletters, etc.)
Photography
The level of commitment is somewhat flexible and can be project-based, long-term, or just to provide insight and feedback. If you have interest but little to no experience, we still would like to hear from you!
