Believe it or not, my experience with SVA’s Students-in-Community Program (SIC) gave me the exposure to the radiology field and opened doors that I didn’t know existed – doors that opened through community service and networking. Being a community service volunteer has continued throughout my years beyond SVA, and have been vital to my career with its growth and longevity. I’d volunteered in the ‘Boarder Baby’ department at UMDNJ(now University Hospital) and that experience helped me through the acceptance process into the ultrasound program. The program only accepted 12 students, and I was one of them.
I have been married for +20-years and we have two teenagers. I’ve played the role of classroom mom and fundraiser for their sports teams. Currently, I sit on the board of the finance committee of our church, Christ the King, Jersey City. I am also an avid fundraiser for the church, raising funds for our youth group and community activities. I’ve involved my own children in volunteering at our church activities as well as cooking, buying goods and serving the homeless at Penn Station, Newark.
SVA’s perspective on community service, and SVA’s four-year, Students-in-Community Program is to be commended! I hope that my little sisters continue the tradition of community service, reaching back to aid those less fortunate among us. We all stand on the shoulders of those who have come before us. My life continues to be a life of community service. As my network and reputation grow phenomenally, so also does my ability to get things done.
