You Can Save Lives. Donate Blood Now.

This week I went to the American Red Cross in District 4 to donate blood for my 66th time! (We figured I'd given something like 8 gallons of blood over the years.) The staff and volunteers at the Red Cross on N. First Street make the whole process easy and pleasant. I always walk away happy to know I’m literally helping to save lives. I hope you'll consider making a donation today.

Rose, White & Blue 4th of July Parade

July 4th, 2023 • 9:45 a.m. - 12 p.m. • The Alameda, San José

The Rose, White & Blue Parade is a historic community celebration that brings together residents, businesses, and organizations of San José and the greater Bay Area in celebration of diversity, public spirit, and our floral and agricultural heritage. Parade route follows Naglee and The Alameda. If you would like to join our family, friends, and coworkers walking with me and my team, email Angela for info! For more details about the event visit the parade's website.

The RW&B Parade starts near the campus of Lincoln High School. At the staging area, the lineup of parade participants, classic cars, bands, dance groups, and community troupes are organized while children finish decorating their bikes and wagons in red, white and blue streamers. The parade winds its way through the Shasta/Hanchett and Rose Garden neighborhoods (Dana to Naglee to The Alameda).

Give A Backpack to a Student in Need!

D4 is thrilled to team up with Family Giving Tree, a charitable organization committed to empower, uplift, and unite Bay Area students. Since 1990, Family Giving Tree has delivered over 2 million backpacks filled with school supplies and wished-for holiday gifts to recipients who face financial hardships. For this year’s Family Giving Tree Back-to-School Drive, the goal is set to provide 28,000 supply-filled backpacks for their 28th year of supporting students for Back-to-School. Our group has committed to be a part of the movement to fight educational inequity and equip Bay Area students to rise to new heights. We are committed to putting essential, quality school supplies into the hands of our young and ambitious Bay Area scholars. Join us as our D4 team helps them reach this goal by July 27th. We have set our own goal to reach 100+ backpacks so let’s work together to hit that target.

Report Illegal Fireworks!

Fireworks are illegal in the City of San Jose. Lighting fireworks in your neighborhood could spark a brush or structure fire. Fireworks also cause stress and trauma in pets and children. You can anonymously report fireworks in your community and upload photo evidence using the 311 app.

Here’s a breakdown of the fines you could be hit with if you’re caught using or selling fireworks in San Jose.

$1,000 for a first violation

$2,000 for a second violation

$3,000 for a third violation

The sale of fireworks may result in a fine of up to $50,000 plus jail time, depending on quantity.

Report Illegal Fireworks

My office has created a yard sign aimed at urging our neighbors to refrain from using fireworks because of the stress and harm they can cause our dogs and cats. Statistics show our furry friends tend to escape homes and yards more on July 4th than any other day, because they're trying to escape the noise. Please consider posting one of our signs in your yard today.

Who's making a big difference in our community? A great teacher, business owner, a police officer who goes beyond the call of duty. Maybe there's someone spending their free time organizing creek clean-ups or blanket drives for the unhoused... If you've got someone special in your neighborhood, let us know by nominating them to be a District Hero!
