ECAO/OEL Survey on ESA Permit Process
ECAO and OEL are working on obtaining more contractor experiences with the ESA permit system. While ESA conducts their own surveys, we believe our ECAO/OEL independent survey may be useful in identifying some key issues to be addressed with ESA in the future.

Pan-Canadian Electrical Contracting Licensing and Regulations- 2nd Edition
Netco was commissioned by Provincial Electrical Contractors Associations across Canada to analyzes the licensing processes of electrical contractors in each jurisdiction across the country.
 
The report breaks down the basic licensing requirements, regulations & standards, and enforcement & inspection practices in each jurisdiction. The report provides potential solutions and recommendations on how to standardize and harmonize between jurisdictions.

The report states that Ontario has some of the most robust licensing regulations, standards, enforcement, and inspections; with stringent regulations for electrical contractors through the “Standards of Conduct”.
 
Where the concerns and issues lie in Ontario are not with licensing requirements nor
regulations & standards. Rather, Ontario’s issue lies with their designated third-party authority,
the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA). The ESA is an organization established through provincial
legislation as a third-party, financially independent institution in charge of administering the
Electrical Code, licensing, enforcement, and inspections. 

Ontario Helping Small Businesses Establish Online Presence
Government’s investment will help businesses expand their digital presence and market their services online

Toronto — The Ontario government is investing $10 million towards the Digital Main Street program for 2021-22 to help over 13,000 small businesses expand their digital presence and market their services online. As businesses enter Step 3 of the Roadmap to Reopen, the renewed program will provide small businesses with $2,500 grants, technical training, and digital resources to help them reach more customers in person and online, positioning them for a stronger recovery.

Eligible businesses are as follows:
  • Has a permanent 'brick-and-mortar' establishment in Ontario
  • Is employing 1-50 employees
  • Has not received a DTG previously
  • Is paying commercial property tax (commercially assessed), either directly or through commercial rent
  • Is a registered business in Ontario and/or is incorporated
  • Is open for business/operating at the time of application (not a start-up)
  • Is NOT a business supplying digital services to other businesses (e.g. website design/development, SEO, programming)
  • Is NOT a franchise, including those individually owned and operated
  • Is NOT a not-for-profit/ charitable organization
  • Is NOT renting office space on a temporary basis (month-to-month)
  • Is NOT in a shared workspace such as a hot desk or dedicated desk
  • Is NOT a purely online business

A little about Lifesong for Orphans Canada

Lifesong for Orphans Canada oversees the Lifesong Harmony School in Kitwe, Zambia. Its goal is to provide quality education to students and provide them with the tools to transition into adult living. Students attend from pre-school to grade 12, with 650 students currently attending the school. At the beginning of each year, 50-60 new students enter pre-school. As they near the end of their secondary school enrollment, the students have the option to pursue post-academic studies or learn a trade at the new Lifesong Vocational & Technical Centre (LVTC).
