Know Your Value!

Your values are a reflection of who you are and what is important to you. When you prioritize your values, it can help guide many of your decisions in life, such as which job or career path to pursue. It also allows you to clearly define the goals that matter most to you, and how you want to go about achieving them. Being aware of your values is an important step in creating a life that is meaningful and aligned with what you truly want and need. Additionally, it can help you identify areas of your life where there may be conflict between what you value and how you're living day to day. By being conscious of this, you can set intentions to make shifts in order to create a life that is more in alignment with your values.

Last week on March 8th International Women's Day was celebrated, recognizing the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women who have come a long way in gaining respect and appreciation in society. Identifying our value as women validates that we’ve come a long way. However, despite the progress that’s been made, women still face challenges so we keep pushing forward to achieve our full potential. This applies to everything we do, personally and professionally to uphold our worth.

At the FSA, maintaining our value is central to our team. We continually try to raise the bar. Recently we achieved this by establishing a new prominent spa membership called Source4Leaders (S4L) to support and elevate our spa community in Florida. This leading program offers access to exclusive events, high level resources, and professional development opportunities. At our inaugural celebration at EVARA Beach Spa, we held our first S4L gathering of spa members for an afternoon of discussion and brainstorming along with presentations from sponsors that joined us. Our goal was (and is) to create strong partnerships between our members and we’re proud to say the event was a huge success. Our new S4L membership provides high level resources for our members which adds more value to our spa community.

As we look forward to our upcoming FSA event in Tampa, our goal is to increase our value for our spa community by providing an innovative exhibit showcasing our Resource Partners along with hosting an instrumental educational session featuring a highly skilled panel of experts that will offer solutions to help spa leaders alleviate challenges and staffing issues with innovative strategies for recruiting, training and retaining employees. All in one day and under one roof, our goal is to make this event rich in value for our spa community.

Ultimately, when you live and work according to your values, you can experience greater purpose and satisfaction in all aspects of life. So take some time to determine what matters most to you and how it can guide the decisions you make. Your values are the foundation of who you are and the life you create. And always “know your value”!

Wishing wellness,

Ilana

PAST EVENTS

The FSA held its newly launched Spa VIP membership Source4leaders event at EVARA Beach Spa at the Auberge Beach Resorts on March 9th . This new platform was introduced to Spa Directors as an elevated VIP spa leadership initiative.

At the event, S4L spa members were able to take advantage of informative presentations from industry experts and collaborate with fellow members to share ideas and strategies. Our 3 sponsors Salt Chamber, The Biostation and Spa Space provided insights into their brands and how it contributes to health and wellness plus offering valuable spa solutions.

The high level think tank discussions included best practices for creating successful business models and leveraging expertise to make their operations more efficient. Additionally, each attendee had an opportunity to participate in focused conversations and understanding of spa operations and challenges. The members input was invaluable in creating a comprehensive roadmap for building strong partnerships between Florida spas and the greater spa industry, as well as to aid our mission of elevating the spa experience. The FSA is proud to be able to provide this program for spa professionals in Florida, and we look forward to growing S4L with the help of our members.

At Source4Leaders, we strive to empower spa owners with the knowledge and network they need to succeed. This event demonstrated how focused conversations can bring about meaningful and impactful results. We thank all of the attendees, spa leaders and sponsors, who joined us that day and look forward to continuing to foster a spirit of collaboration together!

"Voice-It" Spa Talk with Mitchell

March Mitchness

The ISpa Convention is around the corner and for the first time in 19 years, I will be fortunate enough to attend. The growing stature of the FSA in the eyes of ISpa is rewarding and I look forward to participating with a different perspective. It won’t just be about what I can gain for my own Club, but what I can bring back to the FSA as an Events Committee Chair and Board Member. My most memorable experience from that last conference remains with me even today.

I remember standing up during the Q&A session after a panel on the future trends in the Spa Industry. There must have been 1,000 people in this vast cavern of spa professionals. I even saw my former employer, the late Alex Szekely from Rancho La Puerta on the dais and was so impressed. Then, I suddenly found myself standing up asking for the audience microphone. I asked the crowd, “If we are an industry promoting natural, authentic and personalized healing, how do we reconcile these goals with our industry responsible for generating more planet-clogging garbage with our vendor packing materials and plastic yoga mats? “

Silence…

I tried to sound less like an activist and just reason with this sea of colleagues staring at me, “We offer services and buy products that were based on the ancient healing powers of water and benefits of essential oils, yet we need to ask our manufacturers of these goods to operate with sustainability in mind. When we throw something away, we ignore the fact that there is NO AWAY. It goes in someone’s backyard or bay or some landfill.”  At last…applause. I sat down and felt like the kid shouting “The emperor has no clothes!” I saw hypocrisy among the brightest minds on the planet and it bothered me.

Two decades later our industry has made a lot of progress. I see it in the recycled boxes I receive and the compostable packing and it makes me smile. But we spa leaders are way behind in saving the planet we depend on for e.v.e.r.y.t.h.i.n.g. We must all keep striving for both small and gigantic change in our industry, one purchase order at a time.

FLORIDA STATE LEGISLATIVE UPDATES

IMPORTANT LEGISLATIVE INFORMATION

The Anti-Human trafficking Bill:

Anti-human trafficking bill would hold repeat violators accountable Hotels and other public lodging establishments have been caught skirting anti-human trafficking requirements more than 14,000 times since a 2019 law was passed.

But no one, not even a business repeatedly offending, has ever had to pay for it, a Sun Sentinel investigation found.

Senate Democratic Leader Lauren Book is looking to change that. Book introduced a bill (SB 692) that would close a loophole in the law that Book got passed in 2019. Her proposal would make it so that administrative fines are levied upon those who repeatedly get caught not posting information about the illegality of human trafficking or neglecting to properly train employees to recognize the signs of the crime

SPA SPOTLIGHT

Charlotte Prescott, Director of Spa &Fitness

Fisher Island Club, Miami

ISPA Board Member & FSA Board Chair

Charlotte first started her career watching her mother work in the Beauty/Spa world and grew up immersed in the industry, working summer jobs in renowned, luxury spas and winter breaks on cruise ships. In 2000, Charlotte accepted the role of VP of Sales & Marketing for Aromatherapy Associates Inc. which took her all over North American, the Caribbean, Mexico and even parts of Asia, partnering and servicing some of the most impressive resorts and spas all around the world. In 2007, she transitioned into spa operations opening the Spa Chakra location in the Conrad Hotel in Brickell, Miami. In 2008  she joined the opening leadership team of Canyon Ranch Hotel & Spa in Miami Beach where she served as the Director of Spa & Fitness for five years and where the spa was bestowed with many accolades including Best Spa by Virtuoso. Prior to her present position, just shy of 4 years, as the Director of Spa and Fitness at the prestigious Fisher Island Club in Miami, Charlotte served as Director of Spa, Fitness & Retail at the renowned Biltmore Hotel & Spa in Coral Gables for 6 years.

Charlotte currently serves on the Board of Directors for the International Spa Association (ISPA), and continues to proudly serve as Board Chair for the Florida Spa & Wellness Association (FSA) since its inception in 2009, largely due to her desire to give back to so many who have mentored her throughout her career and to keep challenging herself to learn and develop more…which has become her career long craving.

Charlotte is grateful for the lessons she continues to learn from her younger employees and the upcoming professionals entering the industry. She plans to work in this industry for many years to come and to hold on to that “craving” to develop herself further. Referencing Charlotte....“These fresh new professionals are challenging and developing me further not only as their leader, but also their colleague”.

Charlotte’s inspiration was watching her mothers professional successes in the spa industry and the grace in how she balanced a career and raised three children at the same time. It was her mothers example that made Charlotte never question that she would be a working mom. “Although we all struggle with the right balance of work and home, her example is reassurance that even when it feels work-life pulls you from your home-life, your example to your children and family can still be a positive impact”.

FSA VENDOR HIGHLIGHT

Leo M. Tonkin is the Founder and CEO of SALT Chamber, the first company to introduce salt therapy to North America in 2012. SALT Chamber has completed over 1,400+ projects worldwide. He is the founding Chairman of the Salt Therapy Association and Chair of the Respiratory Wellness Initiative from the Global Wellness Institute.

Thank you to the FSA for allowing me to share my story and the power of salt therapy!

I started SALT Chamber a little more than 10 years ago after learning about dry salt therapy from a colleague from Eastern Europe. In many countries, dry salt therapy is considered a medical treatment, but for spas and hospitality my goal was to create a unique and relaxing experience that provides skin, respiratory and mental wellness. Many spas had relaxation and treatment rooms to upgrade, or underutilized square footage somewhere in the spa, so conversion to revenue-producing salt space made perfect sense.

SALT Chamber started using Himalayan salt as a decor element and pioneered backlit salt brick and panel systems to create ambiance. One of our first large-scale salt rooms that is still going strong today is the JW Marriott Turnberry Resort & Spa. Fast forward to today, we have designed more than 1400 projects of all sizes and shapes including using our personalized SALT Booths® designed to fit in any space. The Biltmore Waldorf Astoria in Phoenix, Arizona recently launched a freestanding salt building, and we have many large-scale projects in the pipeline.

A four-day workweek pilot was so successful most firms say they won’t go back

If the idea of working four days a week for the same pay sounds like music to your ears, the results of a pilot program from the United Kingdom may give you cause for hope.

Dozens of companies there took part in the world’s largest trial of the four-day workweek — and a majority of supervisors and employees liked it so much they’ve decided to keep the arrangement. In fact, 15 percent of the employees who participated said “no amount of money” would convince them to go back to working five days a week.

5 Possible Health Benefits of Cold Water Therapy

Taking an icy plunge may help relieve pain, aid exercise recovery, and boost your mood. Here’s what research and experts say.

Sitting in a barrel or bathtub filled with ice-cold water may sound a bit crazy. Still, people worldwide do it regularly for its potential health benefits.

This practice, known as cold-water immersion, is becoming an increasingly popular form of cold water therapy. Wim Hof, a Dutch extreme athlete, also known as “The Iceman,” earned his nickname by breaking world records related to cold exposure, as well as by creating a program involving cold-water immersion, breath work, and commitment (willpower) for possible wellness perks. But Hof wasn’t the first.

Today, physical therapists, chiropractors, personal trainers, and other healthcare professionals use cold-water immersion and other forms of cold water therapy (such as contrast water therapy, which alternates exposure to hot and cold water) as a way to relieve pain, potentially speed up muscle recovery, and more.

GRASS IS GREENER

How Urban Agriculture Builds Sustainable Cities

Today, responsible city planners are looking for ways to make our urban centers

more sustainable and environmentally friendly.

The green movement, after all, is more than just a fad. Instead, it’s a crucial component of the changes we need to make to ensure our planet is still thriving for future generations.

Learn more about sustainable cities and what part urban agriculture plays in their development.

What Are Sustainable Cities?

Sustainable cities, sometimes called eco-cities or green cities, are urban environments that emphasize environmentally friendly practices and minimize environmental impacts. According to Sustainability Magazine, some of the world’s most sustainable cities include Canberra, Madrid, Brisbane, Dubai, and Copenhagen.

If you take some time to study sustainable cities, you’ll find that they tend to have a few things in common. These typically include:

  • Safe and accessible public transportation
  • Easy access to green spaces and other public resources
  • Good practices surrounding water conservation and waste management
  • Thriving urban agriculture
  • Green architecture is implemented throughout the city

Why Do We Need Sustainable Cities?

It’s no secret that our world is becoming increasingly urbanized. In 1980, roughly 4.4 billion people lived in urban areas, but by 2014 this number had grown to 7.3 billion. Now, predictions expect the world’s urban population to reach 9.7 billion by 2050. That’s about two-thirds of the predicted global population, an astounding number.
