Wines We Will Be Tasting:
Bastianich Friulano "Adriatico"
Friulano is the most typical white wine in Friuli, the northernmost region of Italy. It is an indigenous grape variety grown in Friuli for hundreds of years. Our Friulano is produced in the Colli Orientali area of Friuli, an area known for its unique terroir and where world-class white wines of Italy are produced.
Bastianich Sauvignon "B"
In order to highlight the elegance of one of the main components in our blended white "Vespa Bianco", 2007 marked the first vintage of our 100% Sauvignon. This white shows Sauvignon Blanc's complexity along with its typical freshness. We achieve this by allowing extra hang time on the vine, careful vineyard selection and extra attention throughout the vinification process.
Bastianich Vespa Bianco
The flagship wine of the Bastianich estate, Vespa Bianco was created to showcase the power and evolution that a great Friulian white can have. Consisting of equal parts Sauvignon and Chardonnay with a measure of Picolit, Vespa becomes more than a sum of its parts, a wine of uncommon complexity and longevity.
Bastianich Tocai Plus
A single-vineyard of sixty-year-old vines, on a perfectly exposed hilltop, yields an extreme example of our native Friulano. We concentrate the flavors of our old-vine Tocai by harvesting at optimum ripeness. Ten-percent of the harvested fruit undergoes an additional period of appassimento, making this full, rich wine the equivalent of a white Amarone.
Bastianich Rosato
Refosco, known for producing spicy reds with dark fruit flavors (also used in our Vespa Rosso and Calabrone), expresses itself here in a refreshing way with aromatic intensity and unexpected weight on the palate for a rosato. Our dedication and focus on Friuli's indigenous varieties led us to create this unique and easily drinkable expression of Refosco.
La Mozza Aragone
Aragone was created to be unlike "Super Tuscan" wines. Our goal was to create a unique and particular blend by incorporating Mediterranean varietals such as Alicante, Syrah and Carigan. Aragone relates to the Aragons of Spain who together with the Medici family of Florence dominated Maremma. The six-pointed star depicted on the label represents an arial view of a military fort called "Forte Stella" located in Porto Ercole just south of Grosseto.
La Mozza I Perazzi
I Perazzi was created to be unlike most other Morellino's which see little or no time in oak. The blend of I Perazzi is more expressive and better demonstrates the potential of the terroir. It also hints towards what the top wine from the estate called Aragone. I Perazzi is named after the fruit trees that grow on the estate and bear a pear like fruit, which is depicted on the label.
BASTIANICH
The Bastianich winery, founded in 1997, strives to understand the history and culture of Friuli-Venezia Giulia and take it to a new level. We create unique wines that speak of place but, at the same time, show remarkable power and balance.
LA MOZZA
All aware of the enormous potential of the Maremma region of southwest Tuscany, Joe and Lidia Bastianich and Chef Mario Batali came together to create a new winery with a modern mission: To express this terroir to the fullest with new and exciting grape varieties. The indigenous Sangiovese is blended with Mediterranean varieties, like Syrah and Carignan, to create a unique "Super-Med."
