Hello,

We have a sliver of woods that separates our house from the neighbor’s house, and occasionally we have wildlife that walks through our property.

Unfortunately, most of the critters come through at night, but sometimes if we have a quick eye, we can spot some movement in the woods. I’m not sure why I enjoy spotting animals in nature, but it’s enjoyable. You may recall a few months ago we spotted a coyote. You can read about it here.

Amelia and I painted pottery for a school fundraiser Saturday morning.
Well, over the weekend we had a new species sighting. We saw a turkey! Of course, I make a big deal out of it and pick the girls up and run to the window or go outside to get a better look.

Normally the deer run as soon as they spot us. So, we’re trying to get a glance as quickly as possible. The turkey was different. In fact, the turkey acted just as you may suspect. She was mostly unfazed by us and started casually walking back the way she came. It didn’t seem like the smartest approach.

While we as humans are vastly more intelligent than turkeys, if we’re not careful we can be a turkey! Doing the wrong thing at the wrong time.

When I was a kid, I loved to go swimming! My parents put me and my sister in swim lessons at the YMCA when we were young. Anytime I got a chance to go swimming I was excited!

I had a friend who had a pool at his house, so getting invited to his house in the summer meant we were swimming. Occasionally, I’d get invited to spend the night at his house.
We slept in the finished basement and off the basement was the pool. Well, for some reason I was out at the pool alone one afternoon. I think I was waiting for my friend to get ready for dinner, because I remember I was fully clothed and had my hair combed.

I don’t know what I was doing, but all I know is I was too close to the edge of the pool. And I fell in. I was extremely embarrassed that I had been a turkey!

It was no big deal to the family that was hosting me but my pride was hurt. Sometimes we run into issues when we have the best of intentions. I was just trying to occupy myself while I waited for my friend. I wasn’t doing anything naughty.

Then we went shoe shopping. A favorite pastime.
When it comes to investing, I’ve observed that sometimes we make reactionary decisions based on short-term circumstances. An example of this may be changing allocations because some event in the news happened that day. Or taking an unplanned distribution without fully thinking through how it impacts the overall goals you are striving for.

We commonly see this when the stock market trends down. If our gut reaction is to make a change in our accounts when the market goes down five or ten percent, we may need to evaluate if our plan was appropriate for us. We may need to go back to square one and work through determining our risk tolerance, our goals and our objectives.

The way we provide clarity around market downturns or making changes is we help our clients set up plans that have parameters around them. We set appropriate expectations and benchmarks that are achievable.

A reason we see clients dissatisfied with their advisor is oftentimes the person did not receive proper communication around what to expect in different markets.
We believe that by bringing clarity to our clients we are being kind. I
