Walk 'N' Roll Event

Head down to Coffee Pot Park this Saturday, September 7, there will be a Walk 'N' Roll and Disability Resource Fair event from 9:00am-12:00pm. Nearly 1 billion people around the world live with disabilities. Many of these individuals and their families are unaware of services and support available to them. The Joni and Friends Disability Resource Fair & Walk ‘N’ Roll is an opportunity to bring together people living with disabilities, their families, friends, vendors, service providers and community partners to raise awareness and transform the lives of individuals affected by disability. There will be resource tables providing valuable information, an accessible playground, food vendors, and opportunities to connect with others impacted by disability. We will also be collecting non-powered wheelchairs to support Wheels for the World.

The walk will begin at 9:30am where you will take a stroll around town. Once the walk concludes there will be a free disability vendor fair for families and community members. The Walk-n-Roll has a registration fee which includes a lunch voucher, shirt and a SWAG bag. The Disability Resource Fair is free to everyone.

Pavement Markings Coming

Draper St. will have periodic closures on Friday (9/6) and Monday (9/9) from 5am – 1pm to complete pavement markings. The contractor will be completing parking stall marking on Friday (9/6), and center line and crosswalk work on Monday (9/9). On Friday, we anticipate that only parking will be impacted – meaning the travel lanes will remain open. The contractor will open parking up as soon as the paint is dried. On Monday, travel may be impacted as they complete crosswalk work. We ask residents to be aware that they may need to use alternate routes, especially during school drop off. We apologize for any inconvenience.

This Week in History

On September 5, 2006, Katie Couric makes headlines—and TV history—with her highly publicized debut as the first female solo anchor of a weekday network evening news broadcast, CBS Evening News with Katie Couric. Couric, who served as co-anchor of The Today Show from 1991 to 2006, replaced Dan Rather, who anchored CBS Evening News from 1981 until his retirement on March 9, 2005, in the aftermath of a controversial story about the military record of President George W. Bush. Barbara Walters was the first woman to co-anchor the network evening news, when she was paired up with Harry Reasoner on the ABC Evening News from 1976 to 1978.

Couric was born on January 7, 1957, in Arlington, Virginia, and graduated from the University of Virginia in 1979. That same year, she began her career in journalism as a desk assistant at ABC News in Washington, D.C. During the 1980s, she was a TV reporter in Miami and Washington, eventually becoming a Pentagon correspondent for NBC. On April 5, 1991, Couric became the permanent co-host, alongside Bryant Gumbel, of The Today Show, where she was known for her perky on-air personality as well as her hard-hitting interview style with politicians and other newsmakers. On April 5, 2006, after months of speculation in the media, Couric announced she would leave Today. That same day, CBS officially confirmed that Couric would become the anchor and managing editor of CBS Evening News. Her salary of $15 million per year–which made her TV’s highest-paid news anchor–reportedly remained the same.

Couric said farewell to Today Show viewers on May 31, 2006. Meredith Vieira, a former co-host of Walters’ daytime chat fest The View, replaced Couric on Today.

Couric’s heavily hyped September 5, 2006, debut on the CBS Evening News attracted large numbers of viewers, but the show’s ratings later dropped below those of competitors NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams and ABC’s World News with Charles Gibson. She held the position until May 2011.
