District 65 Receives Excellence in Program Quality Award at International Convention
I’m so encouraged that we earned this award as a District by having 40% or more of our clubs be Distinguished in 2022-23. I feel that this year our District will become Distinguished or higher, but why stop there!
We have the potential to become Smedley Distinguished if we continue striving to work as a team and form 1 to 2 clubs per Division, train more of our club officers, continue adding new members, enhancing our respective club experiences, and having everyone complete more speeches in Pathways.
Sam Otto, DTM
District Director 2023-2024

Smedley Award
Program Dates: August 1 – September 30
Can your club add five new, dual, or reinstated members with a join date between August 1 and September 30? Accomplish this goal and you’ll qualify to receive a Smedley Award ribbon, named in honor of Ralph Smedley, which you can display on your club’s banner. Qualifying clubs can also earn a special discount code for 10% off their next club order. (The discount code expires six months from the date of issue and is not valid with any other offer.)
Applications and payments for members with a join date between August 1 and September 30 must be received at World Headquarters or online no later than September 30. The addition of transfer and charter members does not count toward Smedley Award credit.
The winning clubs will be revealed online within a few weeks of the submission deadline. Winning clubs should allow up to 10 business days to receive their award if they are located in the United States, and up to 21 business days if they are outside of the United States.

Speechcraft Incentive
Does autumn feel like “Back To School” for you? Many people get in the habit of starting new projects or signing up for a course. It’s the perfect time for Toastmasters!
Speechcraft is an abbreviated Toastmasters experience, like a mini college course on speaking. It is designed for non-members, run by experienced club members. It can be 4, 6, or 8 weeks long. Speechcraft is also an excellent membership building tool.
To hear more, please attend the information workshop on Monday September 11th at 6:00pm (details below).
Our District team would be happy to help you get you started! We’re offering free Speechcraft ($50.00 value) to all District 65 clubs that run a Speechcraft between October 2023 to May 2024.
Please send your questions to PQD Avis Brodie or CGD Rachel Dowling and be sure to contact one of us to register your purchase.

Club Growth 2023-2024
I am so excited to serve our District as this year's Club Growth Director. We have so much opportunity to charter new clubs and grow our membership. I say "we" and not "I" because we are all in this together! I am looking forward to supporting our existing clubs while working hard to form new ones. As Club Growth Director, I am responsible for all aspects of marketing, club-building, and member- and club-retention efforts within the District.
If you are interested in helping out, have ideas for new clubs, want more information about club coaching, or just want to say hi, please reach out!
I am looking forward to an amazing year of growth together!

Dear Patty,
After I completed the Leadership Development path, I chose the Motivational Strategies Path as my second path because I liked the Emotional Intelligence Level 3 required project which appears only in this path.
I completed Level 3 but I now find the Level 4 and Level 5 required projects too difficult to do and am not interested in either one of them.
Since I eventually want to complete two paths for DTM, what can I do?

Dear Befuddled Burt,
First of all, you must indeed complete 2 paths for DTM. No "partial credit" is given.
One option you have is to start a third path. Before you do, look at the Levels 3, 4, and 5 required projects to be sure they are projects you can and want to do. (This is the only real difference among the paths.) You will have to go through all five levels of your new path; you cannot "transfer" what you did in Levels 1, 2, and 3 to your new path.
Perhaps a better option is to consult with your fellow Toastmasters, including your mentor or VPE, to provide a fresh perspective and ideas for these projects. You may also go to District 65 Facebook page to find others working on the same projects for some collaboration.
Hope this helps - Patty
