What Gift Do You Have to Share?
Greetings members of District 65,
As we approach a season known for joy, giving, and caring, I hope that you reflect on what gifts you have and will be sharing with others.
Sometimes our presence can be the greatest present that we can give. Do you have time to attend a meeting of another club? Maybe you can contact a club ahead of time and let them know you would like to visit? Offer to fill a role if needed. This is a great practice to start if you are thinking about how you can help other clubs. You never know how much you will add to their meetings and how much you will learn.
We all have something to offer. We need to try something new. Why not now?
Wishing you all warm and happy holidays.

District Pride Cup History
The District Pride Cup was formally announced at the 2015 Leadership Breakfast. The original intent was to encourage pride in our district and incentivize clubs to help the district in various ways. The criteria for 2015-2016 gave clubs credit for a variety of helpful things they did during the year. This included participation in speech contests, bringing in new members, and supporting district activities. The original point system was difficult to manage and now the district director for the year it is being awarded makes the decision.
I believe the clubs that have received this award since 2016 have indeed felt pride in winning it. The trophy is impressive and clubs that win it should be proud of their commitment to District 65 Toastmasters.
Clubs that have been recognized and District Director presenting it:
2015-2016 Empire Statesmen, Brion Keller
2016-2017 Postprandial Toastmasters, Sherry Hunt
2017-2018 University of Buffalo, Ellen O'Connor Pieklo
2018-2019 Rhetorical Roar, Lillian Knight Faison
2019-2020 M&T Leaders and Speaker, Pam Gorman
2020-2021 Speak Up-CNY (Corning Inc.), Linda Lathrop
2021-2022 Pinnacle Toastmasters Club, Brenda Billups

Call for District Leadership Nominees
Dear District 65 Toastmasters,
The District Leadership Committee is fired up and ready to go in search of our next leaders in District 65. Are you looking for leadership opportunities to take you to the next level in Toastmasters and in your personal and professional development? The District Leadership Committee (DLC) is tasked with nominating individuals for the following elected positions:
- District Director
- Program Quality Director
- Club Growth Director
- Division Directors (five total), for Divisions A, B, C, D, and E.
For a detailed explanation of the District Leader qualifications and responsibilities, please click Here.
The DLC is also tasked with reviewing applications for the following appointed positions:
- Public Relations Manager
- Finance Manager
- Administration Manager
- Area Directors
-
Logistics Manager (while this is a critical role for D65, this is not one of the District roles that receives credit towards the Distinguished Toastmaster requirement to serve as a District Officer for one year)
The DLC invites applications from energetic, enthusiastic, dedicated individuals interested in providing ethical, quality leadership to serve as District 65 and leaders for the 2023-2024 term. To learn more about the District Leadership Program and process, please download a copy of the Toastmasters Leadership Handbook.
Why not challenge yourself to step up and discover the leader in you while you enhance your contribution to our District’s success and your own growth and development?
To nominate a member of District 65 that you believe is qualified to fill a role, please download and fill out the District Leader Nominating Form. You may nominate yourself or another member who meets the qualifications, and you may nominate candidates for more than one position.
Nominated candidates must complete and submit the following three items:
-
Candidate Application,
-
District Leader Agreement and Release Statement,
- In addition, a headshot and biography are required. All documents and photograph must be submitted by email to the DLC Chair and committee members at the time of the nomination.
If you are nominating yourself, please complete and submit the forms identified above.
In addition, you may want to review the nomination process and campaign rules, identified in Protocol 9 of the Toastmasters International Governing Documents.
All candidates declaring for a 2023-2024 District Leadership role must declare to the District Leadership Chair, Brenda Billups, of their intent to run no later than January 15, 2023, as follows:
- Candidates for District Director, Program Quality Director, Club Growth Director and Division Director
- Candidates for Public Relations Manager, Finance Manager, Administration Manager, Logistics Manager, and Area Director
Candidates who confirm their agreement to run for office will be interviewed by members of the DLC, which is comprised of members representing each Division within District 65. While the DLC chair is part of the process, the DLC chair is not a voting member; the DLC, while not voting, will be part of the interview process to learn more about candidates.
After interviews and discussions among committee are completed, the DLC Committee will provide the District Director with a list of candidates approved to run for elected positions during the 2023 District 65 Annual Conference. These recommendations will be made and provided to the District Director at least six, (6) weeks prior to the Conference, being held via Zoom.
The DLC will also make recommendations for appointed District positions. Appointments are made by the incoming District Director and will be voted upon at the 2023 District 65 Fall Business Meeting.
Sincerely,
Brenda Billups, DTM, IPDD

Rules, Rules, Rules
What are rules and why are rules important?
Rules are a prescribed guide for conduct or action. Toastmasters is guided by its governing documents, code of conduct and Robert’s rules of order.
These guidelines show toastmaster members what is right to do and to what extent. As time goes, new rules are needed, and/or old ones are updated in order to fit the present state of the organization.
Without rules, any group will not be able to function in any way.
Good rules plus clarity equals good process and understanding.
Without this comes mistrust and protest.
The role of a Parliamentarian is to act as a consultant to the District Director to ensure that good process is undertaken when conducting district business.
Clear expression of the process ensures understanding of the meeting participants and assures results that are for the common good.
If you want to know more about parliamentary procedure, and how the governing documents and Robert's rules of order apply to your club, then reach out and start the conversation.

Division B
Since the beginning of the Pandemic, DayBreakers Toastmasters Club has been running successful hybrid meetings. Speaking virtually has been a challenge for some, but with the current reality, confident VIRTUAL speakers are in demand.
This club has implemented criteria for engaging the audience both in person and virtual. Daybreakers Toastmasters Club provides speakers and members with an experience merging the "IN PERSON" audiences with the virtual ones through a professional room set up to make this all possible. Members and guests are encouraged to experience the club both in person and/or through a computer screen, whichever is more convenient or desirable.
The early hours that this club operates have been providing the opportunity to UNIVERSITY OF ROCHESTER and URMC staff, leaders, and members to attend early in the morning before their work shift begins. After each meeting everyone is feeling motivated, energized, and ready to conquer the day as great communicators. The culture in this club is always welcoming to guests and potential new members.
Club meets:
1st, 3rd, & 5th Thursday, 7:30 am- 9:00 am
Location: Strong Memorial Hospital

Division C
Peer 2 Peer had a spectacular open house in October. Kate Reinhardt was inducted as a new member. Euan Morton (VP Membership) invited the most guests, Amanda Stevens (VP Public Relations) drove from Syracuse to support the open house, and Joan Martt (Sergeant at Arms) orchestrated the meeting.
They had two dynamic presentations: Albert Cohen with "Toastmasters is the Best Remedy for Speaking Ailments" and Bruce Wayne McLellan got the entire audience to howl as he beat the drum of his story.
Andy Wiedrick, Club Treasurer was available with membership applications. The club executive team did an excellent job with the entire presentation from greeting guests at the door to maintaining the lectern at all times Jean Pryor (Division C Director) attended the meeting virtually and Club Growth Director Betty Brewer Johnson was present in person. Awesome job, everyone!

Dear Patty
Dear Patty,
Last month you shared how to award credit for a completed level to different clubs. I successfully spread the credit to my three clubs. Now, I forget who received what for credit. Is there a simple way to track this?
Eager Earl
____
Hi Eager Earl,
Until I found the solution, I struggled with this, too. I kept the record in my sent emails…notification to the clubs that I wanted a specific club to approve a project. You can imagine how I floundered to track these notes. I later tried a spreadsheet which worked better as long as updated it.
Then a conversation with a TI representative showed me that My Profile contains all of the information. With the new landing/home page on TI, the source is even easier to find. Follow these steps:
1. Login to your account
2. Scroll down to the section which offers you
.....a. Go to Base Camp
.....b. Learning Hub
.....c. Achievement Board
3. Select Education Awards
Voila’ as the French say. There it is…every path level that you completed with the date and club who received credit.
Enjoy reminiscing through your achievements,
Pathways Patty,
Please reach out to the Pathways Committee for any questions you may still have concerning Pathways at D65Pathways@gmail.com. We share the email.
Please note, the Pathways Committee will be stepping back for contest presenters during December and January. We will be back with a Blog Presentation in February. Happy Holidays!
