DISTRICT 6 UPDATE - DECEMBER 2023

Dear Neighbor,

I hope you are having a wonderful holiday season. Last month, I co-hosted an opioid-fentanyl town hall, attended the Canyon business meeting, participated in the annual Veterans Day Ceremony, and helped honor an Anaheim veteran at the Operation Home Renovation event.

I encourage you to follow me on social media for more updates and announcements.

Opioid-Fentanyl Crisis

Town Hall

Last month I co-hosted a Town Hall in Anaheim Hills addressing the Opioid-Fentanyl Crisis in Orange County. Attendees heard from Supervisor Don Wagner, OC Health Agency, OC Sheriff's Department, Anaheim Fire and Rescue, and Anaheim Police Department about this very serious crisis in our community. We learned about community prevention and treatment resources. There was also a training session on administering Naloxone, a life saving opioid overdose reversal drug. Each participant was given a free box of Naloxone.

The Canyon Business Community Meeting

Last month I attended the Discover Anaheim Canyon business meeting hosting by the Anaheim Economic Development Department. The Canyon is home to 3,000 businesses and 43,000 jobs, helping make Anaheim the place to live, work, and play. The City invited all the businesses in the Canyon district to the mixer at Brewery X. City staff and elected officials were on hand to provide resources, answer questions, and help local businesses thrive.

Veterans Day Ceremony

I participated in Anaheim’s annual Veterans Day ceremony at the Veterans Monument in downtown. Anaheim's Veterans Monument was designed by Orange County artist Richard Turner and dedicated in 1999.Thank you to everyone who attended, especially all the veterans. Today and every day, we are grateful and thankful for everyone who served.

Operation Home Renovation

Each year, Reborn Cabinets Inc. honors a veteran through their Operation Home Renovation initiative. Operation Home Renovation is an event where a veteran is selected and provided with a bathroom remodel as a way of saying ‘Thank you for your service’. The day is spent celebrating the veteran as his neighbors, friends and family join for a BBQ lunch. This year, veteran Harry Takeno, U.S. Coast Guard (retired), an Anaheim Hills resident, was selected as the honoree. I had the privilege of attending the event when the project was finished. Thank you to Reborn Cabinets Inc. for serving our veterans and a big thank you to Mr. Takeno for your service!

Anaheim Strategic Plan

Anaheim is working on a strategic plan of community priorities and guiding principles to lead our work on behalf of residents, businesses and visitors.

With help from the community, the goal of a strategic plan is to outline high-level priorities, objectives and issues that can help guide policy decisions by our City Council and the work and planning of city departments.

We already know many critical priorities for Anaheim, including addressing homelessness, affordable housing, public safety and others.

A strategic plan can include those topics as well as others. Some potential high-level priorities could include enhancing or expanding parks, emergency preparedness or planning for a changing climate.

A strategic plan is a chance to think big about larger issues that impact the daily life of our city today and in years to come.

I encourage you to share your thoughts and to take a survey that will help us develop a strategic plan.

Know Your Way During Fire Season

With regional fires around us, I want to remind you to be fire aware, alert and ready should we see fires closer to home. Everyone should have an emergency plan in place, especially those of us living in Anaheim Hills with the risk of wildfires, earthquakes and landslides.

Anaheim has a comprehensive evacuation strategy should we need to get people out during a wildfire or other emergency. Everyone in the hills should know their neighborhood evacuation zone and primary route out, plus two or three other routes in case roads are closed or conditions change.

In addition to knowing your evacuation route, it's good to know what zone you're in. You should have an emergency plan in place if you're at work, if your kids are at school, or if you have elderly relatives or pets at home.

What You Need To Know About Organic Waste

Single-family residences should now be separating food scraps from the main trash and putting them in the brown yard waste bin.

Food scraps that can go in the yard and organics waste bin include fruits, vegetables, meat, bones, eggshells, shellfish, grains and coffee grounds. You can also put food-soiled paper and paper bags without wax coatings in the organics bin.

Baking soda and charcoal filters can be used to minimize odors in your organic bin.

If you live in an apartment or townhouse, check with your property manager to understand how the program will work in your community.
