Kansas WIC Program Now Available Without Physical Presenc
e
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Kansas WIC program will continue to operate. WIC is the nutrition program for low-income pregnant women, infants, and children from birth to age five, funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).
All current Kansas WIC participants will continue to receive benefits, and new applicants will be assessed, certified and issued benefits. Using telephone, computer and other technology, local clinic staff will be able to assess and certify applicants for eligibility and issue food benefits remotely to those determined eligible.
Clinic operating hours and staff availability will be subject to local and state orders related to the pandemic. Applicants and current participants should contact their local WIC clinic to find out what options are available. Clinic locations are available online at:

As the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) situation continues to evolve, it’s difficult for us to understand all of it and it’s particularly difficult for children to grasp. Children may respond more strongly to the stress and anxiety caused by COVID-19 and become frightened that they or their loved ones will get sick.
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has created
guidance
to help adults have conversations with children about COVID-19 and ways they can avoid getting and spreading the disease. Here are some tips on talking to your children:
- Remain calm and reassuring.
- Make yourself available to listen and to talk.
- Pay attention to what children see or hear on television, radio or online. Consider reducing the amount of screen time focused on COVID-19 for both you and your kids. Too much information on one topic can lead to anxiety. Be creative and think of fun activities that will occupy your child’s time. Keep a schedule, set appropriate limits and maintain usual rules of behavior.
- Provide information that is honest and accurate.
- Keep it simple.
What is COVID-19? COVID-19 is the short name for “Coronavirus disease 2019.” It is a new virus. Doctors and scientists are still learning about it. Recently, this virus has made a lot of people sick. Doctors think that most people will be okay, especially kids, but some people might get pretty sick. They are working hard to help people stay healthy.
What can I do so that I don’t get COVID-19? You can practice healthy habits to help stay healthy. Cough or sneeze into a tissue or your elbow. If you sneeze or cough into a tissue, throw it in the trash right away. Keep your hands out of your mouth, nose and eyes. This will help keep germs out of your body. Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Follow these five steps—wet, lather (make bubbles), scrub (rub together), rinse and dry. You can sing the “Happy Birthday” song twice. If you don’t have soap and water, have an adult help you use a special hand cleaner.

Your copy should address 3 key questions: Who am I writing for? (Audience) Why should they care? (Benefit) What do I want them to do here? (Call-to-Action)
Create a great offer by adding words like "free" "personalized" "complimentary" or "customized." A sense of urgency often helps readers take an action, so think about inserting phrases like "for a limited time only" or "only 7 remaining!"

TEST SMOKE ALARMS AND PRACTICE YOUR TWO-MINUTE DRILL
Working smoke alarms can cut the risk of dying in a home fire by half and having a home fire escape plan further increases the odds of survival. In fact, fire experts say that you have as little as two minutes to escape a burning home before it’s too late.
- Install smoke alarms on every level of your home and test them monthly. Place them inside and outside bedrooms and sleeping areas
- Create and practice your home fire escape plan until everyone in your household can get out in two minutes or less. Include at least two ways to escape every room. Select a meeting spot at a safe distance away from your home, such as your neighbor’s home or landmark like a specific tree in your front yard, where everyone knows to meet.

As the Stay-At-Home order continues, Wichita Police Department is reminding citizens if you see behavior, you believe is a public health concern regarding the stay at home order, you can report it by calling 316-660-9000. The number is staffed Monday - Friday from 8am - 5pm, or email
stayathomefaq@sedgwick.gov

With the closure of MacDonald Golf Course, we understand the temptation to go on to the course but please be aware of how these actions have consequences. By adults, children and pets playing on the greens, tees and in the bunkers, along with golf carts being driven without regard to follow golf etiquette, unnecessary damage will happen to the golf course. With damage comes repair, which could delay the golf course opening as soon as possible. Wichita Police Department has been asked to increase patrol in these areas and will remove anyone for trespassing. Please be considerate and respectful during these times and avoid temptation.

April Burn Ban
City of Wichita officials reminded residents this week that open burning in certain areas of the state, including Wichita, is restricted during the month of April.
The April Burn Ban is imposed in 16 counties by the State of Kansas through the entire month of April, as part of the Flint Hills Smoke Management Plan. The state regulations were employed in response to the Kansas Flint Hills Smoke Management Plan which was implemented to address concerns that smoke from Flint Hills agricultural burning during April impacts urban areas by significantly increasing ozone levels, specifically in the Wichita and Kansas City areas.
Restricted activities include burning trees and brush from land clearing, crop residues, construction debris, yard waste, and the use of backyard chimineas and fire pits. To comply with the regulations, the Wichita Fire Department (WFD) will enforce an open burning ban during April. Effective April 1, no new burn permits will be issued and all previously issued burn permits will be suspended until at least May 1, 2020. Live fire training will also be suspended during this time. This ban does not include outdoor cooking apparatuses, ceremonial fires, or open burning for the purpose of crop, range, pasture, and wildlife or watershed management in accordance with K.A.R. 28-19-648.
