Pasadena Reinforces All Fireworks Are Illegal and Ordinance Will Be Strictly Enforced; Fines up to $50,000 and Serving Up to One Year in County Jail
PASADENA, Calif.—Statistics show that fireworks are among the most dangerous of all consumer products. The City maintains a zero-tolerance enforcement policy for fireworks, and Pasadena's municipal code holds property owners and tenants responsible for permitting the possession, sale, usage, or discharge of fireworks on their property. The ordinance allows for the prosecution of fireworks-related offenses and for the demand of payment for all costs associated with the safe disposal of confiscated fireworks. Any person who violates the ordinance or any state law regarding fireworks is subject to arrest; having their vehicles impounded; serving up to one year in county jail; and being fined up to $50,000.
Even hand-held sparklers, which many consider safe, are dangerous and can reach 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit, causing serious burns or fires. National Fire Protection Association statistics reveal that a majority of fireworks-related injuries are caused by so-called “safe and sane” fireworks, which are illegal in Pasadena.
Help keep our community—our children, our homes and our property—safe from illegal fireworks. If you see something, say something! Call Pasadena Police Department at (626) 744-4241 to report illegal fireworks and other suspicious activities. Residents may also use the City Service Center mobile app (Pasadena CSC), available on Google Play and the App Store, to report illegal fireworks.
Pasadena police and firefighters are teaming up for special fireworks enforcement patrols before and during the Fourth of July holiday, and officers will seize fireworks in an effort to protect the public. Parking enforcement officers will ensure that vehicles illegally parked in Pasadena’s hillside areas on July 4 are impounded.
Pasadena Fire Chief Chad Augustin and Police Chief Gene Harris urge everyone to prioritize safety while responsibly celebrating our Great Nation’s Birthday. The City offers the following safety reminders:
- Pasadena has a “NO Fireworks, Zero Tolerance Policy” for enforcement.
- Celebrate responsibility, always designate a driver.
- If outdoors, remember to use sunscreen, wear a brimmed hat for shade and stay hydrated.
- Always have someone tending the barbecue and watching the swimming pool when in use.
- Call 9-1-1 for all life-threatening emergencies.
- Call (626) 744-4241 for all other public safety needs. If You See Something, Say Something, especially about illegal fireworks. The home, property or lives you save from fire, might just be your own.
-
Visit ReadyPasadena.net for emergency preparedness information and register your telephones to receive Red Flag Alerts or other emergency notifications.
PLEASE NOTE: America Fest will not happen this year. The Rose Bowl Stadium will be hosting a soccer game on July 4. Only ticket holders will be permitted to park in the area, and parking will be strictly enforced around the stadium.

Proposed Robinson Family Memorial |
The City is proud to announce the proposed installation of the Robinson Family Home Memorial and Historical Marker at 123 Pepper Street.
The goal of this project would not only be to recognize the home in which Mack and Jackie Robinson grew up but to honor Mallie Robinson and her family as a whole. Currently, the site is memorialized by a plaque imbedded on the concrete parkway in front of the house. At the urging of the late Councilmember John J. Kennedy, staff was asked to develop a more visible memorial that better signified the site and could be a point of pride for the city and the neighborhood. The proposed memorial will stand approximately five feet tall, is ADA accessible, and will have three plaques with language that honors the entire Robinson family, including Mack and Jackie. City staff worked closely with Robinson family members in developing the language for the plaques.
This project was presented to the Northwest Commission at their May 14, 2024 meeting. This project will be presented to the Northwest Commission again on July 9, 2024.

This is Our Brave Space: A Group Art Exhibit
Today – June 30 • Jefferson Branch Library, 1500 E. Villa St.
Safely expressing feelings and emotions is an important part of mental health. Teen Central’s Share Your Secrets box enabled youth to share their vulnerable emotions and thoughts. This is Our Brave Space is an interactive exhibit of “secrets” collected from that box between 2016 and 2018. The exhibit will highlight both heartbreaking and heartwarming secrets from children, teens, and young adults.
If you have a secret that you’d like to share, you are invited to write your secret on a slip of paper and drop it into the “This is Our Brave Space” lockbox, which will be displayed during the exhibit. We will choose a “new” secret each week to highlight.

Assistance with FAFSA
College Access Plan has received a grant through the Department of Education to support 2024-2025 FAFSA completion through the end of the summer.
While the primary focus of this funding is to support first time college-goers, they are also happy to help anyone who needs help completing the new "better" FAFSA, including postsecondary returners. The botched roll-out, complete with confounding roadblocks -- particularly for mixed status families, has been anything but better. Of course, they will also support CADAA completion!
Please send anyone who wishes to set up an appointment to submit or completing their FAFSA this link: https://tinyurl.com/DoTheFAFSA

ELEVATED NUMBER OF TYPHUS FEVER INFECTIONS REPORTED IN PASADENA
PASADENA, Calif.— Pasadena Public Health Department (PPHD) has received an elevated number of reports of typhus fever infections in Pasadena compared to in other years (as of May), and would like to encourage the community to take action to prevent further infections.
Typhus fever is a disease spread to humans by infected fleas and can cause high fever, chills, headache and rash in people. Generally, one to five cases are reported in Pasadena per year, and most cases occur in the summer or fall. However, in 2024, eight Pasadena residents have already been reported with typhus fever. All reported cases have received treatment and recovered.
In Pasadena, infected fleas are primarily carried by feral cats and opossums. People who regularly interact with these animals are at risk. Pet dogs and cats that are allowed outside can encounter infected fleas and expose their owners to these fleas. Typhus is treatable with antibiotics with good recovery, however three deaths from typhus were reported in 2023 in Los Angeles County. Pets and animals do not get sick from typhus.
There are simple ways to prevent the spread of typhus:
- Reduce yard debris and trim overgrown vegetation to discourage the presence of wild animals like feral cats and opossums
- Do not leave pet food outdoors
- Do not provide food or water for wild animals
- Keep garbage containers tightly covered
- Seal all openings and crawl spaces under the home
- Routinely treat pet dogs and cats with flea control medication
Typhus is diagnosed by clinical symptoms and a blood test. Local health providers are required to report any Pasadena residents with a suspected or confirmed typhus diagnosis within one working day to PPHD at (626) 744-6089 Monday to Friday 8 A.M. - 5 P.M., or (626) 744-6043 after hours.

RECONNECTING PASADENA MASTER PLAN
The City of Pasadena is developing a Master Plan to transform the SR-710 stub, turning it into a dynamic community space. This portion, commonly referred to as the “stub,” is a short, unfinished section located in Pasadena. The Reconnecting Pasadena Master Plan process will focus on enhancements to existing connectivity, mobility, open space, and quality of life for residents and visitors alike. From improved transportation infrastructure
and pedestrian-friendly amenities to green spaces, cultural attractions, and economic opportunities, the plan will re-imagine the SR-710 stub and create a more inclusive and sustainable environment.
GET INVOLVED!
The community engagement and public participation process is critical
to the success of the Plan’s objectives. Engagement and opportunities for input
will be ongoing throughout the process and will include multiple opportunities for communities to share ideas, feedback and concerns.

Pasadena Minimum Wage Set to Increase on July 1, 2024
PASADENA, Calif.—The City of Pasadena wants local employers and employees to know that the city’s minimum wage is set to increase from $16.93 per hour to $17.50 per hour for all businesses, regardless of size, on July 1, 2024.
On March 14, 2016, the Pasadena City Council adopted its own minimum wage ordinance. Pasadena’s minimum wage rules were approved prior to the State of California’s action, and the state’s minimum wage does not preempt Pasadena’s minimum wage ordinance. Pasadena’s minimum wage is different from the state’s and provides for a steeper increase in the minimum wage. After a series of prescribed annual increases, Pasadena’s minimum wage is now adjusted by an amount equal to the change in the consumer price index. The new wage rate will remain in effect until June 30, 2025, when it will again be adjusted.
On April 1, 2024, the minimum wage set by the State for all “national fast-food chain” establishments is $20.00 per hour. California’s fast-food worker’s minimum wage applies to all national fast-food chain establishments within the geographical boundaries of Pasadena and supersedes the local minimum wage rate if the employer meets the definition of “national fast-food chain.” For more information about California’s minimum wage for fast-food workers please visit the California Department of Industrial Relations at Dir.Ca.Gov/Dlse/Minimum_Wage.htm.
Recognizing the importance of the local minimum wage and particularly its impact on low-wage earners and members of the immigrant community, Planning & Community Development Director Jennifer Paige noted that workers at all levels bring vibrance and vitality to the local economy. Employees can share in Pasadena’s prosperity made possible, in large part, by the City Council’s vision in requiring payment of a fair and just minimum wage.
