BEYOND THE MAT
What Am I Supposed to Think About in Asana Practice?
I have been asked this question many times over the years and I love it. For one, the moment we are aware that we are thinking, we are not the thought, we are the observer. Secondly, this acknowledgement of “what shall I think about” is the realization that we get to choose what we will give the gift of our attention to and that’s yoga at its best.

What follows is how I experience and teach the guiding of the mind in an asana context.

I begin by describing four steps, but these steps can be viewed more like a circle because as our practice refines, every step also refines. They are:

An asana is experienced when the mind and the body are at ease and are stable, so we call on these feelings. We remind ourselves that there is nothing rigid about stability and that ease, not to be confused with easy, is our true nature. Stability and ease create an auspicious internal environment for asana practice and life as a whole. At first for most of us, stability and ease is a concept, but with reflection and practice it becomes an experience. In addition, this type of underlying attitude keeps us internally smiling, which helps find our balance between effort and effortlessness...
WELLNESS TIPS WITH PROCARE
How to Prevent Low Back Pain

One of the most common conditions we address in our practice is low back pain. There are many potential causes of back pain, such as acute injury, repetitive strain, or postural imbalances. Whether you have suffered a muscle strain or a more serious injury with disc protrusion of the lumbar spine, there are steps you can take to decrease the chance of re-injury.

Step one: Improve core strength – if you have strong deep core muscles, you will have improved spinal stability and a stronger base of support when moving through your activities of daily living.

Step two: Decrease strain on the muscles crossing your pelvis by adding a static hamstring stretch and hip flexor stretch into your daily routine. This can help decrease tension in the muscles on the front and back of your pelvis and reduce the strain on your lumbar spine.

Step three: Be smart with lifting – never twist and flex forward at the same time while lifting. Always turn your body to face what you are lifting, bend with the knees and engage your core muscles – even with the lightest objects.

If you have any questions on how you can prevent low back pain, feel free to stop by and chat, give us a call or send us an email, we would be happy to help!
